Tie 2-2

Tough physical game.  They were up two zip in the first half before Mark finished a nice one to bring us close.  In the second half, Steve took a corner and it bounced off someone before Shane finished it. Adam got a red card for retailiating to a cheap hit (the other guy got a red too).  Steve and I think that Adam is now our current leader in Red Cards.

Spring finally arrived and we had a perfect day. Shane had 2, and Damien, Mark, Amir added their own.  Damien's was particularly nice goal from a corner.  Amir's was a header off a Steve corner.  Defense was very solid and Greg only had to make a couple of saves.

We only had 11, but we really dominated. Joe and Mike Jones split the goal duties. Mark had 2, Damien 2 (but one was an unlucky own goal) and Thabit had 2 late in the game when his fiancee left.  Mike Falletti stopped by at the end and he looks great.  He plans to be back playing in 3 weeks.

Won 4-1

We played most of the game 10 v 10.  We dominated early and were up 3-0 by half time.  Shane, Mark, and Steve got our goals in the first half and Mark added a final goal early in the second half.

Once again, a ton of players from both teams showed up to play. Game was very physical, but the ref seemed to do an ok job of keeping it under control. They had some skilled players but couldn't break the Express defense to develop a serious threat. The lone Joel Goal was enough to win the match. Greg somehow kept the ball out of the net during a late charge with about 6 of their guys on our goal line banging at it.

We started on the defensive and pretty much stayed there, although we did work a little better in the second half.

Lost 1-4

It was hot and they had a lot of subs and young guys.  It didn't take them long to get ahead.  In the second half we found our stride and were able to counter a few times.  Mark scored our lone goal late in the second half.

Won 1-0

We had 7 "yes" before the game, so we almost cancelled.  It was very hot, and we picked up a 15 year old kid who lived near the field to make 11.  The Arsenal had lots of young guys and 10 subs. Steve scored early getting his own rebound.  Joel and Mike J. combined to shut out the Arsenal.  It was a great win for us.

Tie 2-2

We started with just about 11 at gametime and Gregg showed up a few minutes into the game. We had 3 subs until Thabit finally showed in the 2nd half. We went up 1-0 with a great strike from Tony from just outside the box on the left side. We should have had a few more before their younger guys showed up, but we failed to capitalize. They tied it at 1-1 for a few minutes until David made a "blistering" run down the left side and made it 2-1. Unfortunately they matched it with a run by one of their young guys down the middle while we all watched, and he put it past Gregg to make it 2-2. Jon brought beverages, but the police in the parking lot kept them in the cooler.

Lost 1-2

We started out with everyone at the field early, but there was a tournament going on so we moved to another field.  The other team was short, so we gave them Pete and Mike (for the first half).  They scored first and Steve finished a cross for our only goal.  Lots of chances, but nothing at the back of the imaginary net.

Won 3-2

I remember Joel and Glenn both scoring from fairly far out.  Someone scored another before I left at the end of the first half.  David was our keeper for the day.

We luckily picked up Chris who had two of our goals.  Mark rebounded his own missed PK for one of his two.  Shane and Jon did a great job of getting the ball forward.

We had John K. and Tyson guest for us in the 90 plus heat. We very much dominated the game going up 3-0 in the first half on 2 goals from Thabit (one on a PK) and one from Joel.  Steve got a little too excited on a run up the left side and rolled over the ball breaking his fibula above the ankle in the process.  They showed a little life in the second half, but Damien put in our final goal.

We pretty much dominated the game after Mark scored. Chris added our second in the second half and Tyson got the third.  Tony directed the defense to a solid performance.

Guest commentary from Joel:We played on a really bad, narrow field in Reston, and had only 11 at game time (although one sub, who shall not be named, arrived at "Glenn-time"). We had only Adam and Joel as regular defenders, although John C. and Rob (a friend of Tyson) helped on the outside. Mike F. played keeper, although his bad back prevented him from bending down at all, or running much. We outplayed them during the first half, but still trailed 1-0, on a cheap goal, but mostly because our own open-net shots were a mere 20 feet or so above the crossbar each time. In the second half, someone (who shall remain nameless, but he's from a Middle Eastern country that is not Iran) booted a penalty kick wide of the post. They then scored another cheap goal, and we lost 2-0.

Tie 3-3

They attacked quickly before we got organized and got an early goal. Amir answered with some help from Thabit and Chris. Amir added a couple more before the half, but they were all answered. Greg had several one on one saves.

Hutchison hasn't improved with age and it was a bit chilly. We had a fairly even game with Nacho working the goal. Thabit, Mark, and Nick (Jon's son) scored our goals and Steve getting some nice crosses.

Lost 1-2

Beautiful new field and a great day. Damien crossed to Thabit who hit the post and then Adam finished it off for our only goal.

Lost 0-2

Record warm temperatures and a soggy soccer field brought the biggest crowd out yet.  Unfortunately, we couldn't put it in the back of either the big or little goals.

More warm temperatures and a great field. Although we didn't totally suck, we certainly got outscored.

Won 2-1

Although it was lightly raining, Hutchison was in surprisingly good condition.  Both teams were missing a couple of players.  We scored first, but I don't remember the details.  The second was a nice cross from Shane to David.  Glenn arrived right on time, close to the second half, and we gave him to the Attack to even the numbers.  He returned the favor by scoring their only goal.  Mike Jones was our goalie for the first and Adam for the second.

Great end to the Winter season. They were down a couple, so we gave them Pete and Adam.  They didn't have a "real" goalie, so our goals weren't that pretty.  Steve got the first, Joe got one, and Mark had three.  Greg played for them in the second half and Joe played keeper for us.

We dominated early.  Thabit sent a nice one to David's head for our first.  Sean picked up some trash and forced an own goal, and then he got a nice one on a cross.  We fell apart for 5 minutes and they got two quick ones in the second half.

We won the first half 2-0. They had a couple of ringers show up for the 2nd and we went down 5-2. Got one back to end up 5-3. Mark T and Faletti had goals, can't remember who got the 3rd.

George, the 13-yr old son of our guest keeper scored our only goal.

Lost 3-2

We started out dominating and scored first.  I think David got the header, but he thinks he kicked it in from 30 yards.  They scored and then Mark even it up for us.  We were on our heals most of the second half.  They scored with seconds to go on a way offside play.  The other coach apologized to me.  We also were reminded why we didn't like Kaiser.

That's another $75 poorly spent on a ref.  We were terrible the first 30 minutes with most of the time in our own half.  They scored 2 on us with Edwin playing goal.  Tony had two goals in the second half, both floating high.  As usually happens, they scored with minutes left on a clearly offside play.

This story is getting old.  We scored first, with Tony bringing down the ball (twice) and then sending it off to Mark for the finish.  They scored a couple in the second half.

Joel was in goal and Mike J. was finally back.  This was the first time we really put some offense together in a while.  I don't remember who on our team scored first.  Glenn had 2 and Mark 3.  What was great was for each of their goals, we answered in less than a minute.  Joel was involved in a collision on their second goal and I'm guessing he'll need at least 5 stitches in his lip and a bigger mustache. I must report to the league that David got a yellow card, but it was nullified because he brought Heineken.

The Attack was short players, so we gave them Pete, Sean, and Tyson.  Tyson scored early in the second half for the games only goal. The field was wet, but we had a record high of 78 degrees;  not bad for November. The ref told me it was the best sportmanship he has ever seen in the league.

Well this felt like a win after this season. They had lots of youth. David scored our only goal.  Amir and Steve L. split the goal keeping duties.

From what I heard, we had a poor turnout and sucked.

Another perfect day for a soccer, but lots of people were AWOL.  We held our own in the first half with only 9 players most of the time. We added a local ringer late in the first half, Jose, who scored our two.

Another perfect day for a soccer, but not for us.  Again, we started short and we picked up a kid and they gave us two players.  Steve took the goal, and they scored in a couple of minutes, but the guy was way offside.  With the ref at midfield, we didn't get the call.  They scored a couple more before Adam and then Greg joined us.  In the second half we held them scoreless.

Another perfect day for a soccer, and we managed to steal a tie from the jaws of victory.  Braddock Road had to augment their team with some half a dozen locals who, for the most part, weren't very good.  David scored our first and Tony scored the second and we were up 2-0 in the first half.  Mark had our goal. They scored one in the second, too. Jon took a fall onto his head and neck and was out of the game.  So with 15 minutes left to the game, Steve and I took Jon home.  When we returned, we found out that Braddock Road scored two in the last minute.

So much for the perfect weather; it was instant summer.  They had a bunch of young guys and they out ran and out scored us.  They got 4 in the first 20 minutes and then we settled down.  Adam cleared one that bounced over high over the goalie.  Thabit finished it, but I think it would have gone in anyway.

Greg was out, so we recruited a local kid to play keeper and he did fairly well.  Amir had both our goals, one in each half.

We were light, so we took on a few guest players.  They scored first and Mark answered.  They scored again before the half ended.  We played about 15 minutes and then Joel's injuries forced him to sub out.  I'm sure it was just a coincidence, but we then had one of the best scoring streaks in memory.  Mark got another one, then Amir, Thabit, Adam (Greg's friend), and even Dale.

Guest commentary by Joel. On a very hot, humid day, only 7 Herndon players showed up, but we were supplemented by 5 strong players from the Chantilly squad, which didn't have a game. We completely dominated the first half, holding them to no shots on goal -- unfortunately, none of our shots went in. In the second half, we continued to outplay them, but they did manage to get 5 shots on goal, 2 from uncalled offsides breakaways -- unfortunately, 4 of them went in. Meanwhile, we continued to shoot fruitlessly. Paradoxically, in one of our best played games in a long time, we lost overwhelmingly, 4-0.

The details are sketchy, but we apparently played fairly well.

A beautiful field and a typical hot and humid July day. They started out strong and got 3 goals on fast breaks before we settled down.  Glenn got a header on a cross from John K. just before the half ended.  We tied it up, I think Glenn had another and then Amir.  They brought some young guys in the second half, but we managed to contain them.

They lent us a player in the first half to make it 11.  They got a bad call for a hand ball in the box for their goal.  Amir scored ours.  Lucky to make the game before severe thunderstorms.

I missed this one, but I'm told we did great.

Aug 5

We played fairly well, but they had platoons of young guys and we couldn't manage to get on the board.

We got off to an early lead with a Mike F. corner to Amir's head.  A few minutes later, Amir drilled another one.  In the second half, they got some lucky shots in and we missed a number of opportunities.  Young Adam had our third and missed a PK wide.

I heard there were a couple of ugly goals and a couple of own goals.

Haley Smith didn't have much green left, but at least it was cut short.  Thabit got our first, Glenn our second, Sean forced an own goal, and Amir finished it off.

Won 5-2

It was a beautiful warm day (for January) and a beautiful field which brought out everyone (and their brothers and some acquaintances).  Thabit had 2, and Mark, Dave, Jason added one each.

Repeat what I said last week, except that we couldn't score or defend very well.

Although it rained heavily all day, we got a break for a couple of hours and had a stellar game.  One of the best first halfs I can recall in a long time.  Tony was particularly strong showing off for his kid who also got some playing time.  Mark had 3, new Jon, and David.

Lost 2-5

Tony had a couple of nice goals, and that was about the only bright spot.  At least the weather was nice for February.

From Steve: Best turnout we've had in ages. I think we had 4 or 5 subs. We dominated play early on but had trouble finding the goal. Play got a bit physical due to their frustration. Ref gave out a few yellow cards, one of which should have been a red for taking out our guest, Javier, on a breakaway. We won 4-1 with Mark getting two goals and Steve and Tony each getting one.

From Greg: I think 2-0 at half and 4-0 with 2 seconds to go. With 2 seconds to go they scored on a header from a corner kick. 4-1. Loads of arguments and horrible calls by the ref.
Goals were scored by: Mark 2 (one was an assist from me in goal), Damian 1, great dig and assist by Big Joe, and... and... getting old is tough... ummm Tony 1

Win 3-1

From Steve- One of our best victories in a long time against a very strong Sterling Sting team. Starting with only 8 against their 10 we managed to strike first with a great shot by Glenn from outside the box that found the far upper corner. The lead held for a while but they tied it up with a soft header over an onrushing Gregg.

In the second half we were 11 v 11 with the arrivals of Jon and David and it remained tied at one-all until Thabit took advantage of a throw-in back to the keeper that he shanked. Mark finished it off with another late goal to make it 3-1.

From Greg--This was one of the best games we've played in the last 7 years (according to me), #3 in my book.
It looked rather bleak as we started with only eight players. The Sterling team used their undefended players to attack however they could only hit the goal posts three or four times. On a rare 1st half offense play, Glenn took a 30 yard arching kick from the left side that landed in the right side net to give us a 1-0 start. We gave up a goal on a break-a-way that was headed in a high bounce and it was 1-1 at half. We were at full strength in the 2nd half. Sterling managed to hit the crossbar once again on a free kick. With about 15 minutes left in the game, Thabit scored on a poor throw in by Sterling. Five minutes later, Shane took a corner kick from the left that landed a few feet before the far post and Mark tapped it in to give us a 3-1 win. Tony was amazing in filling in for Adam on defense.

We did not have enough players, so we cancelled.

Strange game under the lights.  We had 3 locals play for us to start and one of them scored twice for us (and then once for them).  Glenn had 2 (one on a PK) and Mark had one.  Greg stopped a PK, too.  It got out of control towards the end and one of our guest players got a red and Adam did too ending the game.

From Joel: 1-1 against a good team. Alex scored on a lone breakaway. They scored late in the 2nd half, when the ref awarded a bogus PK for a questionable foul by Sasha.

Won 1-0

From Joel:Only 6 or so from our team showed up, but we were supplemented by about the same number from our Open team -- and they were the ones at the age to play on our team anyway. The referee was the terrible one from a couple of weeks ago when when the game was halted with 10 minutes left to play. We completely dominated the other team, taking shot after shot, but their goalie, deceptively old and slow-looking, was stopping every shot. Finally, near the end of the 1st half, Joe King scored -- and it was controversial, because the ball went through a hole in the net. In the 2nd half, we continued getting shots, but we just couldn't score again. Meanwhile, our defense held them to just one or two shots the whole game, and Greg easily handled those.

Won 3-2

Express Grey Players: Steve, Joel, Mark, John and Greg. Express White Players: Steve L., Joe K., Jason, and Mike. We had several players fill the last 2 positions, all who were hanging around the field.
We were down 1-0 at half. Tied it at 1-1 when Mark scored off a rebound from the right post.
A few minutes later Mike was taken down and took a very deadly PK into the upper right corner making it 2-1. Score was tied 2-2 soon after.
Joe K. slammed a bouncing ball to the left side of the goal with about six minutes left in the game. The ball had a downward spin and carried through the keepers arms.

 Lost 0-6

We were short again, but the Attack gave us some players.  The goal area were pretty sloppy, but that's no excuse.  It was 4 nothing at half.

 Won 2-1

We gave them Mike F. and Pete and had a great game on a new artificial turf stadium.  Glenn had a beautiful strike and Sasha had our second.  Greg literally spent much of the game lying on the ground.

A beautiful Spring day, although the soccer wasn't so beautiful.  Jason got the first one through a crowd.  Amir fed a long ball to Scott at mid field and he took it in for the second.  Michelle made us run more than we usually do.

Despite only having 9 players show up, we actually started with more than the Turtles.  Beautiful weather and a lousy field.  Jason had all 3 of ours.

Cancelled/Rain

 Lost 6-0

Well, at least the weather was nice.  Lots of guys out, particularly those that could hold the ball in the middle. They got a quick goal, but then we settled and ended the half down one.  In the second half, we fell apart and they had a field day.  The Joel curse is now officially reversed.

 Won 5-2

What a difference a week makes.  It was hot and humid and with the addition of Jake from Mt Vernon and Nick (Jon's son) we had 2 subs.  Jake scored the first goal for us.  Mark had 2.  Glenn had a long goal over the hands of the keeper and Jon had a nice one too.

Tie 2-2

We dominated everything but the scoreboard.  Mark got one of ours and the other was an own goal that Damien forced.  Steve played for them and scored their first goal.  Joel played the first half in goal and Mike F. the second.

Tie 3-3

This tie felt like a big win.  I think the first half was scoreless. We got a call in the box and Jason barely got the point.  They scored three pretty quickly, but we hung in there.  Glenn had a long shot to the right corner and a few minutes later got another. Greg had a ton of saves.  We had the first fists thrown that I can remember.  Jason and John Ross were given red cards.

Won 5-2

Numbers were low, but we had two great guest players, Chris (Tony's friend) and Aaron.  Steve managed to get our first goal before sneaking off.  Thabit got number 2 and Aaron 3.  Pete got number 4 on a cross from Chris to end the first half.  Then we got a little cocky and put Mike in goal.  They scored 2 and had a few more chances before we settled again.  Chris got our final goal.

Luther Jackson is probably the worst field we play on now.  We had 4 subs and the home team didn't have any.  Tony got our first goal and we pretty much dominated the first half. In the second, Mike F. fed 2 to Mark for two rapid goals.  Mark got a solo goal later on.  They didn't really threaten, but they got a PK which Greg stopped.

We suffered from a vacation depleted team.  The Attack was also was low on players, but they had a red headed kid who was killing us in midfield--he actually ran the length of the field.  We had Steve in goal in the first half, and they got one goal off of a lucky bounce back.  We had lots of chances, but never finished.  In the second half, Shane went in goal for the first quarter and then Tony for the last.  Pete took out their forward in the box and they got the PK.  The highlight of the day was Jason walking over to a Doberman after the game and scaring the crap out of it--much the same effect he has on soccer players.

We haven't played this team much, and we suffered from the summer heat and vacation schedule.  They gave us a player and we had Jon's son Nick as well as Yaron.  It was a fairly even game, and Glenn scored in the first half.  Despite all of their subs, they really faded in the second half.

They were short, so we gave them Pete's son James who scored their only goal early.  We had lots of shots off goal and lots of trouble finishing.  In the second half, Thabit got one, and then Shane and Jason.

The grass was long, and the lightning and thunder threatened to cancel the game, but the storm stayed far enough away.  Arlington played with 9 and we had 10.  James scored the first one for us, and Steve had our second.  The second half is kind of a blur, but I think Joe had 2 and David 1.

Only 9 players to start vs their 11.  We actually held our own and Steve put one through the top hole in the net.  They tied it up in a few minutes.  Near the end of the half, they gave us a player and Tony arrived soon after. We had lots of chances and most of their goals were on break aways.

We didn't have enough players!

We struggled to get to 11 again. Glen, Mark, and Dave S. scored for us.  I can't recall Dave scoring for us before.  Jason got 2 yellows in the second half and then Dave scored the winner.

This is the first code red day that I recall having a game on.  It was freaking hot, and I was just sitting on the sidelines. Again, we were very short.  We had John K and James as guests.  They also gave us two young guns.  Springfield scored two quickly, but then Shane got us on the board.  The guys they gave us each scored, but so did they.  In the second half, James evened it up at 4.  But then they scored a couple of more. Mike J. and Tony were our keepers. 

This was only a code Orange Day.  We had 5 guest players, 3 of them U-16s.  Probably amongst the worst turnouts of the regulars in recent memory.  They scored early and we got lucky several times.  They scored another and then we actually looked like we were alive with James sending a nice cross to Thabit's head for our only goal.  In the second half, it was pretty dreadful.  Mike J took the goal for us in the first and Joe in the second.

 Won 2-1

Hutch was full of mud and puddles, but at least we played.  They scored first with minutes left in the first half. Mark evened it up, and then Shane scored. 

 Tie 3-3

The field looked good, but it was slippery under the permafrost.  Greg predicted that they would score early and he was right.  Jeff sent a hard one to the top post and it bounced back onto Greg's back and in.  We got it back when David headed one in.  They got another just under the top bar before the first half ended. Jason and Scott scored ours in the second half.  They got one near the end to tie it up.

Good day for soccer and the best condition that Poe was ever in.  We scored early and kept them coming.  Shane, Joe (Shane assist), Mark 2, and Thabit.

Hutch had standing water in the usual places, so those of us that came early (thanks) decided to set up a new field with junior goals set on their side.  This gave us an interesting dilemma because our offense showed that they couldn't score on a small goal and Greg had a hard time defending it.  We had 11 players with the addition of Pete's son, James.  David scored first, I think.  Then he crossed one which Jason? finished.  Their short older guy scored both of their goals.  We must of out shot them 10-1, but we couldn't find the back of those little goals.  The ref was Czech and didn't have much command of the English language, but he call a fair game.

Actually, probably the best 11 Oaks has been in a while.  We were one light, and Chantilly gave us a very skilled player.  We got our first goal in less than a minute and then three more in the next 10.  That's got to be a record.  Shane, Marco (2) (old Marco, who will now be known as Guatemalan Marco), Jason, and their guy.  The Czech ref mostly got it right, but tempers were a little high.

This goes down as a friendly, since the Attack was short players and we cancelled the ref.  Great weather for the last day of winter.  Of note, Joel scored a goal on a header in the second half. 

No lines or ref, but the field was in surprisingly nice condition.  We had two goals and a whole bunch of field goals.
