Colour can be used to track turbulence and rotational forces.

To observe this I used a camera to take a sequence of pictures of ink as it was dropped into moving water; one every 5 seconds. I could then observe the water motion, which I couldn't have seen without the help of ink and camera.

In the vortex sequence, left, inks remain separate at different levels; blue lower than black. Interesting and beautiful patterns of rotation and turbulence evolve as more black ink is sucked towards the hole.

'Star trails' shows us relative speeds of flow; the lines at the centre of the vortex are particles of pigment moving during a relatively long time exposure.

'Vortexit' shows an unusual pattern of flow, and 'Blue and Yellow' show two inks not mixing, but pursuing their own path; the vortex being above.

My paintings on paper try to communicate the abstract beauty of the elements that shape our world.

Air, water, movement, stillness, pattern, texture, colour, heat and wind all play a part.

The themes are: new places, new life, metaphorical landscape (metascape).

'Birth of the cyanozoa' the floating life-forms are just starting their long journey.

'The timeless dreams of fragile life' is a metascape. Life (the peripheral forms) may be transparent, transitional and ephemeral, but illusions (middle of picture) may take on colour, form and solidity.

'The Ice cool egg' contains within it a contradiction. While the landscape seems on the point of vaporizing, the egg remains untouched by this hot, intense activity.
