April 27: Galapagos - New boat, Yelo!!

Time to cross the Pacific!
We’re talking about leaving on Tuesday, the 30th of April. The trade winds have picked up and are blowing steadily, and now is the perfect time to go. The date of departure though, is chosen on much more important grounds, such as social activities on Saturday and Monday, and second degree of importance, is that the plane will be bringing in fresh vegetables from main land Ecuador on Monday. Tonight is a big party at Casa Rosada, Jeff’s and Claudia’s place; a big musical event with a lot of jam sessions! All sailors are going and I’m sure it will be lots of fun!
New boat
I have changed boat, and will be doing the Pacific Crossing on Yelo, a huge and super-fast catamaran! We are bidding on how long the crossing will take and as for now, the lowest bid seems to be 16 days! Count on 21 though, to be on the safe side. We will be heading to Marquesas, and our first destination is Fatu Hiva. Now it is time to switch from Spanish to French, and meet a whole new culture!!

On Yelo are Rolf, Annette and Andy. Rolf is Swiss, and also the owner and skipper. He knows that Swedes eat rotten fish, and despite of that he is taking me on board! Annette and Andy are a German couple, who have been back-packing around South America, and are now heading to Australia by catching rides on boats. Somewhere along the road, the three of us will be changing boats again because Rolf’s daughters will be getting on either in Tahiti or in Marquesas. We’ll see what happens.

Diving in Galapagos
Finally, we managed to go diving at last! My belly has healed from the burn, and so we did 4 dives with a local fisher these last couple of days. We went to some great dives spots, and again, I saw a huge, giant hammerhead, possibly the largest one ever! In addition, I met a 4 m wing spanned manta with her school of baby mantas, I dived with curious sea lions and I have seen the most impressive schools of unknown fish ever! We also went snorkeling in a volcanic tunnel with sea lions and white tip reef sharks, while at the end of the tunnel there were blasts of vapour exploding as the waves hit some still active fumarole! Wow, imagine if that was impressive!
Anyway, now I am looking forward to cross the Pacific, and so I hope to write to you again from Marquesas!
So long!
Tina
