PMUG BOARD MEETING
iHOP Restaurant, Hwy 29

April 27, 2009

Flash Barnes unknown unknown Snake Kovich

Be on the lookout for these PMUG Board members... check that Blind Spot!

In attendance: Dick Weaver, Bill Barnes, Mary Jane Yarrington, George Norris Marlin Overholt, Carole Adams, Denny Kovich, Cathy Kress.

Dick Weaver will not be able to attend the General Meeting on May 2, so he came to the meeting for a short time to drop off door prizes of a flash drive and the very last of the thermometer-clock-pencil holders and paperwork for Denny to perform the duties of the treasurer at the May 2 meeting. He also announced that the club had $3462.96 in the treasury as of March 31, 2009. It was suggested that the club buy some gift certificates from Best Buy in smaller amounts, perhaps $25 to use as prizes. Dick says he will get them, just let him know if we want them.

53 newsletters were mailed out.

Barnes announced that the speaker for the May meeting will be Apple rep Jonathan Gustavson who will speak on iMovie and iPhoto and should be able to speak to any OSX questions that arise. Gustavson will bring his own computer and Michael Stoops will bring the club's projection equipment.

Barnes has spoken to Chris Wilkinson about the possibility of a program on Internet security. Chris suggested that a program more suitable to the group might be Internet Fraud since his field of expertise is Internet Predators. A program on Internet Fraud could be given by a friend of his on the police force. Barnes will follow up on this suggestion for either the June or the August meeting.

Barnes also encouraged Stoops to ask members if they have an area of expertise they would like to share with the group for either the June or the August meeting. The group seems very receptive to programs on photography. The club has as members some very good photographers who might be willing to make presentations: Pierre Kaufke, Tom Carter and Ron Besser.

Mary Jane will bring the sign in sheets and two of the door prizes to the meeting. Stoops will bring the printer for a door prize.

Considerable discussion followed about the relationship between the club and members who have computer businesses. A soon to be member who is relocating to Pensacola presented the board with the following requests: to present his business at a meeting, offer a discount to club members and place an ad in the newsletter. The Board reached no final decision without the input of President Stoops but did come to a bit of a consensus.
1. PMUG offers no endorsements of businesses. Generally the attitude of caveat emptor was adopted.
2. The newsletter accepts no advertisements. This would affect the non-profit status and plunge us into the depths of tax forms.
3. Board members see no difficulty if the new member wants to introduce himself and his business at a meeting or even make a brief presentation
4. Board members see no difficulty if he wants to put flyers on the back table.
5. If he wants to offer discounts to members, that is between him and the member.
6. No consensus was reached on whether the board should contact AMUG to check on his record with that club.

The meeting adjourned at 7:15 and board members adjourned to admire Denny and Bill's bikes and leathers.

PMUG GENERAL MEETING
PENSACOLA JUNIOR COLLEGE

May 2, 2009

President Michael Stoops called the meeting to order at 10:05 am, welcomed members and introduced club officers.

President Stoops then introduced our speaker Jonathan Gustavson, an Apple expert who works at Pensacola’s Best Buy store.  Mr. Gustavson was accompanied by the Best Buy store manager.  The manager, who spoke first, emphasized that it is the store’s objective to make Best Buy an Apple outlet.  His message:  Best Buy wants PMUG business and is willing to work to earn it.  The store will put PMUG on the store’s web site and PMUG can put flyers in the store.

Mr. Gustavson said that the Best Buy store has Apple experts on hand to help Mac users and to introduce non-Macintosh users to Mac products.  Before anyone in the unit is called an Apple expert, Apple provides two to three months of professional training.  It is Apple that certifies the trainee as an Apple expert.  Mr. Gustavson predicts a sharp rise in Macintosh user base in the Penacola area.  The store’s goal; is to set itself up to handle that base.

Customer questions are answered any time as time allows, but as part of Best Buy’s service to present and potential Mac users, Gustavson conducts a one to one and a half hour weekly Mac topic seminar at the store every Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m.  Attendees generally number about ten.  In the works is a Mac Boot Camp.  It will be held once a month, possibly starting in June.

As a teaser to the quality of seminar he offers Mr. Gustav presented an interesting and informative introduction to iMovie and iPhoto as available in i-Life 2009 (in his estimation, a major improvement over iLife 2008 but usable only with the Leopard operating system).  Among many other features, he demonstrated how iMovie and iPhoto recognize faces and places and showed how to tag photos with names and coordinates for recognition.  He fielded numerous questions from PMUG members regarding iMovie, iPhoto and the Mobile Me website.

Following the presentation, Denny Kovich announced that at future meetings there would be a special door prize drawing of member pictures.  Only members whose picture was in the PMUG data base could win the drawing..

The door prize drawing concluded the meeting.  Winners were George Prettyman, Diane Griffith and Jerome Schmidt.

Respectfully submitted
