TopXNotes Awarded
4 out of 5 Mice By Macworld Magazine
Macintosh note organizer
lauded for its "clean, single-window
interface" and exclusive QuickNotes feature.

Neptune Beach, FL, July 15, 2008 - Tropical Software today
announced
it had been awarded 4 out of 5 mice by Macworld magazine in their
"Summer of Mac Gems" series of reviews. TopXNotes was favored by
the
reviewer for its "clean, single window interface that puts controls
for highlighting and marking up your text right at your
fingertips,"
as well as its exclusive QuickNotes feature. QuickNotes allows
access
to any designated note from a convenient pop-down menu that floats
in
a small palette above other applications. TopXNotes was also
praised
for features that allow you to group related notes together, open
multiple notes at once (still in the same, clean, one window
interface!), and the ability to password protect notes, or mark
them
as "read only."
"Note organizers are a highly competitive market," said Tropical
Software president James Lee. "We are thrilled Macworld has
recognized
the value of our unique and easy-to-use approach."
TopXNotes has also been highly rated by Macsimum News (9 out of
10),
Version Tracker (5.0), and MacUpdate (5.0). Tropical Software also
makes TopXNotes iPod — a version that allows you to seamlessly
transfer your notes to your iPod so you will have them wherever you
go. TopXNotes sells for $39.95 and is available in select Apple
stores
or from the company's web site (www.tropic4.com).

Insanely Simple tutorials for the first time Macintosh user
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – January 15th 2007 – osxhelp.com debuts as the first basic Macintosh help site of its kind on the web. Scott Haneda (Founder) and Caroline Merchiers (Co-founder), bring a new perspective to the Mac help sites currently available. The site is designed for the beginning Mac user, whether it is their first computer or just their first Macintosh, and covers everything and anything that has to do with setting up and using your computer, no matter how small.
“As more and more people are buying their first Macintoshes, more and more people are in need of a good foundation for how to use their new computer” states Caroline Merchiers.
It was apparent there was a void among the existing Mac help sites that needed to be filled. A place where the most basic functions of OS X could be laid out in a clear and concise manner. A site that wasn’t overwhelming and confusing for the first time Mac user, and where there would never be any “stupid questions”.
“My goal is to explain in excruciatingly simple detail, the most basic of functions to learning how to use your computer.” explains Scott Haneda. “If you are on your second or third Macintosh, this site probably will not be of much benefit to you. On the other hand, you never know what you may stumble upon.”
The site will be updated with a new tutorial each day, and users are encouraged to ask questions and leave comments. Since Macintoshes do not come with an instruction manual, the goal is to fill that void.
Scott Haneda has an impressive resume, having worked with Macs for the past 15 years as a developer, designer, and consultant. He is also a contributing editor and technical writer for OSXFAQ.
Caroline Merchiers has worked with both Macs and PC’s for the past 10 years and has worked in design for the past 4 years.

Do you use
Firefox
as your web browser? So do I.
Firefox allows you to
customize your browsing experience with add-ons
and themes. One such add-on is
called McAfee
SiteAdvisor that helps protect you
from spyware, adware, spam, and identity theft. I thought you
might also want to check out SiteAdvisor. MacAfee claims that it
will help you stay safer online. Whenever you visit a Web site or
are asked to provide your e-mail address online,
SiteAdvisor displays a red or green
rating based on the results of its tests of that site.
SiteAdvisor will also warn you about
"phishing" sites and other kinds of online scams. To try it, just
go to http://www.siteadvisor.com/ Also, when you use
Google to search for anything it alerts you of SiteAdvisor's rating
of the link before you go there. Very handy, this is.
Check it out.

SPECIAL REQUEST...
Dear
PMUG,
My
name is Ofer and I’m a researcher at Sheffield University UK. As
part of an international research project we have developed a short
Web survey regarding file retrieval for Macintosh users. If
possible I would like to ask members of the PMUG
to
participate in it. The link to the survey is
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=133413536292
.
A
few words about it:
- It’s very short – contains only 16 questions and takes about 5 minutes to complete.
- It’s completely anonymous and confidential.
- It serves only academic non-commercial purposes.
We are depending on the good will of Mac users - without it we cannot do this research.
Many thanks,
Dr. Ofer Bergman

Mac Efficiency
is back!
In 1998 author Deborah Shadovitz wowed the online Mac world
with Mac Efficiency
101 — her seminars turned
weekly column. Now she's doing the same for a new generation of Mac
users with a new on-going series, Mac Efficiency™ for
OSX at
MacEfficiency.com.
Visitors today will find three columns there to learn from. Each
week, maybe more often, a new column will be added. Articles can be
read in the order they're written, or discovered by topic and read
in any order that may be helpful. You can start reading today, then
send a new acquaintance next month, a new Mac owner next year, and
so on. All articles remain intact and fully accessible, easy to
find.
"Everything is already easier on a Mac," say Mac newscaster
Ken Ray, in his succinct
Mac OS
Ken [http://macosken.com] style. "But what's
great about Mac
Efficiency is the way it takes you
-- step by step -- through making your time on the computer...
well... efficient. From customization to organization,
Mac
Efficiency is a well written, well
put together resource for the newbie to users looking to better
their Mac experience."
One great thing about writing the column live on the web is that
readers can also learn from other readers. "With
Mac
Efficiency 101, readers sent ideas,
supplemental info, and, I admit, the occasional corrections,"
Deborah says. "I'd share this, so everyone learned from this extra
information or practice. It's exciting to have this again." This
time the "prize" for first feedback and an article addition goes to
William Lane, President of the Macintosh Computer
Club of Calgary, who sent his
to-be-added tip (along with congratulations) within hours.
Wondering what Mac
Efficiency will cost you? Nothing
but your time. Each article is sponsored by a few supportive
Mac-related companies.
Check it out. It'll help Mac users, both old and new, become more
efficient and proficient on the Mac.
About Deborah Shadovitz
Deborah Shadovitz has been teaching folks how to use the Mac in
person since the start of 1989 and is no stranger to writing for
Mac users. She's authored and contributed to several books in the
past decade. You may also recognize her name from her features as a
Contributing Editor for Mac Addict magazine, her Mac column in
ComputerUser some years ago, or her contributions to other
publications. She's also knows her way around web design. Deborah
penned the 1,100 page Adobe GoLive 5 Bible a few years ago,
authored Mac Design magazine's GoLive column and the GoLive CS2
First Look for Macworld magazine. This, in addition to editing and
design backgrounds, enable Deborah to write and publish a
first-class, easy-on-the-eyes, easy-to-follow weekly column that's
quite readable on the web and prints out nicely as well.
