Biography

The Author

Brian Garbet, composer, performer, b. Edmonton, AB 12 August; B.F.A. (Simon Fraser University) 2002, Diploma in Jazz Studies (Vancouver Community College) 1996. He has studied with David Duke, Peter Hannan, Martin Gotfrit, Arne Eigenfeldt, Owen Underhill, Janet Danielson, Rodney Sharman, David MacIntyre and Barry Truax. Recently he has taught computer music at Vancouver Community College and presently is archiving the World Soundscape Project at SFU. Brian is also currently a board member and vice president of Vancouver Pro Musica, co-founder of The Riot concert series and guitarist for the Vancouver based rock band Crop Circle.

In 2002, Garbet was a national prize winner in the Jeu de Temps/Times Play competition for young and emerging composers with his electroacoustic piece, Ritual. That composition has since been broadcasted or performed in Victoria, Vancouver, Burnaby, Ottawa, Montreal and Helsinki. In addition, it was featured on the Cache 2002 CD compilation.

The same year, Brian's band Crop Circle scored a Top 5 hit song with Mexican Cockfight. The song was added to CFOX's 2002 Seeds CD compilation as the "secret hidden track." Since then the song has been aired from Victoria to Fredericton and in 2004 was the number one most requested song at Power 104 in Kelowna. Currently the band is having national success with a second single and writing for their debut album.

Brian has composed both acoustic and electroacoustic music for film, concert & theatre. In addition to mixing the two worlds of acoustic and electronic music, Garbet's current interests involve octaphonic soundscape composition. Brian has pushed the envelope by interweaving strong political and sociological messages within his electroacoustic works. Future plans include to delve further in this unconventional direction.
