PhilosophyThe Peer Support Program is based on the belief that positive relationships can be developed by improving the skills, confidence, and self esteem in people, particularly from an early age.People absorb information and values from each other which can be valuable or harmful. The peer group is one such source and is an important and influential force in our social lives. None so strong as that during the adolescent period. The idea is to use this peer influence in a positive manner, particularly at vulnerable stages in our lives. If peer support is utilised to transmit sound ideas, it can be a useful educational method. Small groups provide an opportunity for individuals to have time to relate to each other in a manner that facilitates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where people can learn and feel at ease to be themselves while sharing their ideas, thoughts and experiences. The group can be enhanced by providing leaders or facilitators to help develop the group's spirit and skills. There are various destructive forces at work in our society today on individuals, families and communities leading to an array of social problems. Preventative measures can be taken by developing communication skills, positive relationships, and a supportive network of community members. The person who feels alone and isolated is known to turn to behaviour which momentarily helps them forget, such as the use of drugs and alcohol, and other anti-social activities. The person who doesn't want to be 'left out' will often 'go along with the crowd' and be pressured into partaking of actions rather than voicing their opposition. The school environment is a familiar setting in all communities. It is therefore a sensible and natural place to establish a supportive and positive network where skills can be learnt and confidence and self esteem can be enhanced. The Peer Support Program achieves this by establishing small student groups of peers with trained older students taking the responsibility of the leadership role. The groups and the leaders are directed by adult staff completing the links that have been created of students with students and students with staff. |
