Mission Statement
The Peer Support Foundation of South Australia Inc is a non-profit making educational organisation committed to improving the quality of life for South Australian youth through peer education.
Objectives
This is to be achieved by:
- Establishing the Peer Support Program in all South Australian schools.
- Facilitating teacher training workshops on the major principles, content and processes of the Peer Support Program.
- Supporting teachers, students, and schools who implement the Peer Support Program by providing resources, consultancy, and opportunities to share experiences of the Peer Support Program.
Aims of The Peer Support Program
The Peer Support Program is based on the belief that positive relationships can be developed by improving the skills, confidence, and self esteem in people, particularly from an early age.
- To provide family-size groups of support to students in their school years.
- To provide a secure and friendly environment where students can clarify their goals, share their thoughts and experiences.
- To help young people improve self-esteem and gain the confidence with which to build positive relations with others.
- To improve communication between teachers and students, older and younger students and parents and their children.
- To help the older students as much as the juniors by providing them with the opportunity to take responsibility and participate in their school community.
- To develop leadership and communication skills in the older students who act as 'discussion facilitators' and special friends for groups of younger students.
- To make support available on a daily basis within the school community through the links created between the students and the specially trained volunteer staff participating in the program.
- To provide students with skills to deal with negative peer pressure which can lead to anti-social behaviour, truancy, vandalism, drug and alcohol experimentation.
- To identify developing personal and social problems before they become irreversible.
