Easter Dinner
The Easter dinner worked out well. We had
about 14 people at the table, from toddlers to our local octogenarian
curmudgeon.
The
menu:
Roast leg of
lamb
Roasted
ham
Greek
salad
Baby lima beans and corn in
chive cream
Curried
rice
Mashed
potatoes
Rhubarb
pie
Apple
pie
Chocolate cream
pie
Vanilla ice
cream
Our dinner guests brought
an interesting assortment of gifts: wine, Drambuie, and a lovely roll of George
Bush toilet paper.
As host, I
had a tense moment before dinner when the potential for conflict arose. The
curmudgeon, engaged with a knot of people, let fly some colorful language at one
end of the long table. At the other end of the table, a mom who is wont to
disapprove of that sort of thing said firmly, “Well, the language has
certainly degraded in here.” An awkward silence ensued, until the
curmudgeon chose not to engage on this point and resumed his discourse without
comment.
Discussions included
but were not limited to:
Being
spied upon by the
government
Curtailed freedom of
speech
Slacker
husbands
House
remodeling
Marital stability or lack
thereof
Public
education
Other parents who take
their responsibilities too
lightly
Incarcerated
relatives
Whether the child who threw
up at the last party was likely to do it again at this
one
I enjoyed each and all of
my guests. If any of them did not have a good time, I am grateful that they
concealed that from me.
