The Kiss
Dan is not very verbal. He finds it a
lot easier to express himself with a gesture than with a
word.
He was in his fifth
grade classroom with his aide, Rabbit. It is actually a good thing that his
aide is named Rabbit, as this allows Dan to use some phrases he has learned from
videos. Greetings are covered by Tigger's exuberant, "Hello, Rabbit!" Farewells
are addressed by Yosemite Sam's, "So long,
Rabbit."
On Monday,
apparently Dan was very happy with how things were going. Dan expressed this
just like Wendy in Peter Pan, who said, "I'm so happy, I think I will give you
... a kiss."
Danny gave
Rabbit a kiss.
Part of what
Rabbit does with Dan is give him feedback -- whether a response or behavior is
right, whether something else is desired, that sort of thing. The kids in Dan's
class leaned forward a bit, curious to see what the feedback would be for The
Kiss.
Rabbit said, "A kiss.
That's ... " He paused.
"Surprising!"
My eleven year
old sources tell me that the class laughed aloud, Dan included.
