Dan Keys In On Christmas
In Dan's 11 previous Christmases,
there has not been a lot of evidence that he understood that it was any
different than any other day, or that he saw it
coming.
This year is
different. I put on my tux for a trio gig last weekend, and used the Santa Claus
studs and cufflinks. I pointed to them and asked Dan, "Who is
this?"
He replied in a loud
voice, "Merry
Christmas!"
Tonight while
walking in the neighborhood, he would see a Christmas tree, make that hand
opening and closing towards it which means "I want ..." while saying "Merry
Christmas tree!" After he got home, he persisted in requesting "Merry Christmas
tree."
So, he grasps some
aspects of the holiday, at least. He doesn't share many of his theological
constructs with me, though. The closest he has gotten to that has been to
exclaim "Jesus" a few times when exasperated, leading the parent who is being
imitated (me) to give thanks that the exclamation of choice wasn't something
less tasteful to be imitated.
