A Question For jounalism Observers

I read a column today in the Oregonian, Back Seat, by Stephen Beaven.

I feel like I've intruded on a private conversation. The first three grafs lead you to believe that the writer has received Corporate Guidance for insulting comments about some of the questions posed by readers. In the remainder of the column, he is elaborately obsequious in his answers to questions.

I wondered if his column is a statement to his editors. In the old days, the editor's response to this might well have been profane and personally delivered. However, in this day and age, I suspect that a growing amount of the Guidance comes not from an editor, but from a Corporate Hierarchy.
