The Land Of The Free

America.

George Bush's America.

Where the FBI can give you a National Security Letter which demands that you inform on other citizens, and forbids you from telling anyone about it.

No judges. No warrants.

The "Patriot Act" legislation enabling this requires the FBI to report their actions to Congress. Those FBI reports were wildly inaccurate.

One citizen's experience with this was published by the Washington Post. It had to be anonymous, though.

George Bush's America.

Where the Justice Department plans to get the power to appoint US Attorneys without Senate confirmation, then fires US Attorneys who are investigating Republicans or refusing political pressure to launch prosecution of Democrats timed to coincide with the election. Where their replacements have records as political operatives. Where the Senator who put that appointment power in the Patriot Act says he knows nothing about it, that his aides did it. Where the Attorney General says he knows nothing about the firings, that his aides did it. Where the President says sure, Congress can talk to my aides about it, a few of you in a secret room with no record of what was said.

George Bush's America.

Where the President flies back to Washington in the middle of the night to sign emergency legislation about tube feeding Terry Schiavo, but denounces Congressional debate, votes, and legislation about the Iraq war as "political theater."

I think the America that our troops fight for is the land of the free. That's not the same thing as having to fight to advance the interests of George Bush. More and more of us have caught on to this.
