4-Day trek out of Chiang Mai
A group of eight adventurers headed northwest out of Chiang Mai for 4 days in the mountains and survived....

We left the charm of Chiang Mai for...
....a 4 day adventure in the Northern Mountains
we drove for hours and hours until...
way up in the mountains we came to a
place of solitude - a quiet sanctuary
and a spooky cave home to a colony of bats
yes, we were the brave and the few...
and then we drove and drove till we were almost literally sick of it
At the drop off location. We wouldn't see the truck for three days
till we had hiked about thirty kilometers
through rice fields
and hilltribe villages
and seen some unusual insects and animals
Our camp for the first night
high in the hills
our sleeping cabin
our bathing area
a Karen woman selling handicrafts
beautiful morning sun
and a welcome breakfast lovingly prepared by our guide, Tri
the locals came over for an early morning visit
the Thais are beautiful and peaceful
this little calf was a source of amusement to two puppies
We hiked and hiked up hills and over rivers
getting up onto the elephants
and taking a slow walk through the forest
was the way to go after hours of hiking
A much needed bath in the river at the end of a long day
Our next stop for the evening
in a village full of life
and teeming with children
Bright and early - onward the next morning
through the fields
and streams
and over bridges
until the weary travelers
came to the rafting camp
where we stayed for our third night
and took the slow boat down the Maechaem
with our guide, Montri, at the helm
after our last hike, a welcome sight: the truck
then we drove and drove, up to the highest peak in Thailand
Doi Inthanon
Holy shrines to the Buddha
where many come from far and wide to offer prayers
The intrepid mountaineers at their last stop
we made it back to the capital of the north
and a reunion dinner at a riverside restaurant later that night.
