The Barefoot Hiker
When was the last time you felt a cool carpet of moss under your
bare feet or felt the soothing squish of mud massage your bare toes? When did
you last spring lightly down a trail of fragrant pine needles, their pungent
scent clinging gently to your skin? Or wade across the polished pebbled floor
of a woodland stream? As children, many of us remember the freedom of going
barefoot all summer. But as adults, getting back to nature requires donning
the appropriate gear to "protect" us from it. Perhaps the time has
come to not only get back to the earth -- but to the dirt as well.
It may seem as though there is something new afoot, but trailblazer and
twenty-year hiking veteran, Richard Frazine, reminds us that walking safely
upright and unshod is out most ancient mode of transport. So let him
reintroduce you to the world at your feet and rediscover the soul in your
soles.
