NASA and The Beatles Celebrate Anniversaries by Beaming Song "Across
The Universe" Into Deep Space
For the first time ever, NASA will beam a song -- The Beatles' "Across the Universe" -- directly into deep space at 7 p.m. EST on Feb. 4.
The transmission over NASA's
Deep Space Network will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the
day The Beatles recorded the song, as well as the 50th anniversary
of NASA's founding and the group's beginnings. Two other anniversaries
also are being honored: The launch 50 years ago this week of Explorer
1, the first U.S. satellite, and the founding 45 years ago of
the
Deep Space Network, an international network of antennas that
supports missions to explore the universe.
The transmission is being aimed at the North Star, Polaris, which is located 431 light years away from Earth. The song will travel across the universe at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney expressed excitement that the tune, which was principally written by fellow Beatle John Lennon, was being beamed into the cosmos.
"Amazing! Well done, NASA!" McCartney said in a message to the space agency. "Send my love to the aliens. All the best, Paul."
Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, characterized the song's transmission as a significant event.
"I see that this is the beginning of the new age in which we will communicate with billions of planets across the universe," she said.
It is not the first time Beatles music has been used by NASA; in November 2005,
McCartney performed the song "Good Day Sunshine" during a concert that was transmitted to the International Space Station. "Here Comes the Sun," "Ticket to Ride" and "A Hard Day's Night" are among other Beatles' songs that have been played to wake astronaut crews in orbit.
Feb. 4 has been declared "Across The Universe Day" by Beatles fans to commemorate the anniversaries. As part of the celebration, the public around the world has been invited to participate in the event by simultaneously playing the song at the same time it is transmitted by NASA. Many of the senior NASA scientists and engineers involved in the effort are among the group's biggest fans.
"I've been a Beatles fan for 45 years -- as long as the Deep Space Network has been around," said Dr. Barry Geldzahler, the network's program executive at NASA Headquarters, Washington."What a joy, especially considering that 'Across the Universe' is my personal favorite Beatles song."
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., operates the Deep Space Network. For information about the Deep Space Network, go to:

Lenny Kravitz Wants Paul McCartney -For a musical collaboration,
that is...
Lenny Kravitz wants to duet with Paul McCartney. Kravitz - who owns a mixing desk from London's Abbey Road Studios, famously used by The Beatles - wants McCartney to fly out to his Miami home to record a song with him.
According to Lenny, "All
the Beatles' albums were recorded on that mixing desk and I got
it when my first album Let Love Rule came out in 1990, as I came
into a bit of money. I'd seen a documentary in England made about
it by one of the sound engineers and I knew I had to have it.
It's an incredible piece of gear. At the time I blew all of my
money on it, but if you offered me $10 million for it today I
wouldn't take it. When you see pictures of John Lennon
sitting at the desk it's just priceless. I'd love to bring Paul
McCartney back to my place and make a record with him. How cool
would that be?"

An important message
from Paul McCartney
Dear Friend,
Like me, you've probably seen
the horrifying images of helpless baby seals being beaten and
shot for their fur. Wounded seals left to suffer in agony. Conscious
pups sliced open. And the reason for their pain? So that someone
can sell their fur.
For so many years, we've tried to stop this senseless brutality.
Today, you and I have a chance to stop this
cruelty forever.
Twenty-five years ago, the European Union
made history when it ended its trade in products from newborn
harp seals. Commercial seal hunting in some countries came to
a virtual standstill, and countless baby seals were saved. But
the hunters began to kill the pups when they were slightly older
-- and the products from those seals are legally traded in the
EU. Today, some commercial seal hunts are twice as large as they
were when the EU first took action.
But there is new hope for the seals. The EU is considering ending
all seal product trade in the European Union, regardless of the
age of the seals. This move would save millions of seals from
brutal slaughter, and help put a final end to commercial seal
hunting globally.
Right now, the EU is asking people around the world to submit
their opinions on the historic proposal. Please take a few minutes today to tell the
European Union you fully support a ban on seal product trade.
I'm lucky: I was able to visit a harp seal nursery in Canada's
Gulf of St. Lawrence before the hunters descended. The sight of
mothers and their pups on the pristine ice is one I won't forget,
and I've committed myself to working to preserve that wondrous
spectacle for generations to come.
Commercial seal hunting doesn't simply cause unimaginable suffering
to the seals; it is also dehumanizing and often dangerous work,
contributing very little to the incomes of the hunters. A European
Union ban on all seal product trade would force nations where
seal huting has taken place to invest in real alternatives --
jobs that will provide safe and sustainable futures.
Lets work together to make a better life for seals and people.
Say no to the cruel trade in seal products in the European Union.
It doesn't matter where you live -- your voice counts. Please take action to save the seals today.
The deadline for the European Union to hear your views is February
13.
Sincerely,
Paul McCartney

Israel Withdraws Beatles Ban
Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have been invited back to Israel - 43
years after the Beatles were banned from the country.
The Fab Four were due to play a gig in the Middle Eastern nation
in 1965, but were banished from the country after the then-government
refused to grant the necessary permits over fears their music
would corrupt Israeli youths. But the Israeli ambassador to London,
Ron Prosor, is now set to apologise to the remaining two bandmembers,
as well as the relatives of the late John Lennon
and George
Harrison, to express the country's
"great regret", according to Israeli newspaper the Yediot
Ahronot.
Prosor is currently in the rockers' native Liverpool, England,
where he is due to present an official letter of apology to Lennon's
sister Julia
Baird on Monday (28Jan08)
at The Beatles Story museum.
Prosor is also reported to be inviting McCartney and Starr to
visit Israel in May as part of the country's 60th anniversary
celebrations to mark its founding in May 1948.

Clothes hint at McCartney's late night
It looked like a hard day's night for Sir Paul McCartney when he stepped out in London on Friday morning wearing the same outfit from the previous evening.
The Beatles legend, 65, enjoyed a nostagic reunion with fellow sixties icon Twiggy and Jack Nicholson as the old friends were spotted enjoying dinner at The Ivy together on Thursday night.
And judging from Sir Paul's wardrobe selection the following day, Twiggy must have let him stay on her sofa.
Model icon Twiggy, 58, who picked up her nickname for her waif-like figure, is a long-time friend of Macca, and has offered him support following his split from wife Heather Mills.

Twiggy, whose birth name is Lesley Hornby, is still very much active in the industry as one of the faces of the multi-million-pound advertising campaign for Marks & Spencer. As a former judge of top reality show America's Next Top Model, is married to playwright and actor Leigh Lawson.
Sir Paul, 65, was in good spirits as he ran the gauntlet of waiting photgraphers outside the celebrity haunt despite the strain of his recent health problems and his divorce battle with Heather Mills.

M&S model Twiggy, who has been married to the actor Leigh Lawson for 20 years, is one of the many enduring female acquaintances Sir Paul has found support in recently.
Lulu, another female contemporary of Twiggy's, has also been out with McCartney on a number of occasions recently. They are also said to have spent many evenings at eachother's London homes.
In recent months, the former Beatle has also been linked to Renee Zellweger after the pair went out for dinner in New York twice together.
He was similarly linked to the model Christie Brinkley after the pair danced together at a concert in New York's Hamptons. And he has also been rumoured to be dating the US actress Rosanna Arquette.
Quite a pattern appears to
be emerging. It seems that McCartney sees his future as one of
being around mature women than his estranged wife Heather who
have already made their millions.

Sir Paul tells
Heather he's ready to talk about a deal
As their bitter divorce heads for the High Court, there appears
to have been an eleventh-hour thawing of relations between Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills.
Apparently driven by news of Miss Mills's planned "blitzkrieg-style" tactics of representing herself in court next month, the Beatle has let it be known that he is ready to reconsider the possibility of an out-of-court settlement.
The Daily Mail has learned Miss Mills has been contacted by McCartney's legal team at Paynes Hicks Beach with the message: "Paul's ready to talk."
The pair are scheduled to face one another in a five-day hearing next month where Heather is to represent herself after parting company with her legal firm, Mishcon de Reya.
But McCartney has apparently had a sudden attack of anxiety about what might be said about the breakdown of the marriage.
McCartney and Mills have spoken "three or four" times in recent days over the phone, said a source close to both.
"One of the chats went on for at least 15 minutes, which is the longest they have spoken to one another in months and months.
"It seems that the mood has definitely changed and they are both now ready to resolve things more sensibly."
The Mail understands the main thrust of Miss Mills's case will be that marrying the former Beatle ruined any chance of her living a happy and successful life.
"She is going to say that before they met, people liked her and admired her, she was successful, she had her own career and her own income," the source said.
"She is going to say that when they got together, he stopped her from having a career.
"She is going to say that now that they have split, she is a hate figure and, as such, unemployable.
"Consequently, she will say, Paul should compensate her financially for the rest of her life. For a woman to argue that her future earning capacity has been damaged by her marriage in this way is extremely unusual but the judge may well consider that she has a point."
The source added that the irony is that she actually revived Sir Paul's career while she lost her own.
"Heather contends that she got Paul emotionally back on track when they first got together. When they first met, he was emotionally ruined by the death of (first wife) Linda - he was a lost soul.
"His music was not going anywhere.
"Heather will argue that the stability she gave him got his career back on track. And a financial settlement for her should also reflect her input in his career turning around."
McCartney is understood to fear what revelations Miss Mills might make in court about why the marriage broke down. Leaked legal documents alleged he was violent and cruel to his wife.
But legal sources pointed out yesterday that while such revelations, even if they had any truth, might be damaging to his image, they would not actually impact on the settlement size.
Miss Mills has also been taking advice from friends on how to soften her prickly image ahead of the court date.
The source said: "When she appeared recently on GMTV, she didn't come across as vulnerable, sympathetic and fragile - she just came across as a bit unhinged. She knows she has this image problem and she has been trying to do something about it.
"She wants to come across less barmy and money-grabbing and more the wronged wife and mother."
Publicists for Miss Mills and
Sir Paul would not comment yesterday.

Paul McCartney on ITV ITN News at Ten
Paul McCartney was interviewed by ITN News at Ten to draw attention to The United Nations Livestock's Long Shadow Report and how veganism can help to save the planet from catastrophe.
He's been veggie for 30 years but says that the fact that meat eating experts at The United Nations have now admitted cattle rearing is devastating the planet and more harmful to the planet than the effects of all cars and planes, many more ordinary people should sit up and listen.
Sir Paul credits Linda McCartney with turning the family vegetarian but apparently she said it was his decision, Sir Paul said Linda said "it was you that said it you know!"
Sir Paul sidestepped talking about his second wife's long term vegetarianism but she is now vegan and campaigning with UK vegetarian charity Viva!
He admit's despite all the clear evidence that a veggie lifestyle is better for the planet and better for health, people are unlikely to change overnight.
The repercussions if we don't change will be catastrophic for the planet, no habitable land , no water, no clean air - what sort of legacy is that to leave our children.

Duffy meets Sir Paul
One of Wales's hottest musical properties has revealed she will return to North Wales this summer and may sing at the Sesiwn Fawr Festival.
Duffy, 23, revealed in an interview with the Daily Post that appearing at the festival in Dolgellau was a definite possibility.
The Nefyn singer also recalled how she rubbed shoulders with Sir Paul McCartney and Kylie Minogue on Jools Holland's New Year's Eve TV show.
The former waitress, who has been likened to Sixties icon Dusty Springfield in sound and appearance, was delighted to meet Beatles legend Sir Paul while filming on Jools Holland's Hootenanny programme.
Duffy, who had sung The First Cut Is The Deepest on the show, said: "It's almost weird to meet Paul McCartney in the flesh, in 3D.
"It was not one of those things you imagine doing at this point in your life. In the first five seconds, you're like 'wow, you're Paul McCartney!'
"Then immediately when he opens his mouth and he starts talking to you, it's like 'what a nice guy.' "
She said: "We had conversations about how my dad was a crazy Beatles fan.
"I was very nervous performing
in front of everyone but Paul McCartney told me about how he was
nervous when he was young playing Beatles gigs."

McCartney loses post office fight
A post office in Wirral will close despite Sir Paul McCartney backing a campaign to save it.
The Lower Heswall post office is one of 56 branches across Merseyside and Cheshire which the government revealed were to be axed.
The former Beatle's brother, Mike McCartney, said the announcement has "disgusted" Sir Paul, who owns a house nearby.
He added: "Our kid sent me a text to show his anger."
On behalf of Sir Paul, his brother added: "It is an important part of our community, he visits the post office when he's here, just like other people.
"Paul got involved because he believes the post office should be saved. It will be a huge loss."
Wirral South MP Ben Chapman, was has also campaigned for the Lower Heswall branch to remain open, argued that it was regularly used by the community, particularly elderly residents.
The Labour MP said: "I am disappointed and angry that such a decision has been taken."
He recently presented a 6,000-signature petition against the closures to the House of Commons.
Lancelyn Court post office in Spital is another branch on the Wirral which has lost its fight to stay open.
Royal Mail said it does not

Message from
Paul
Hi everybody,
Happy New Year!
I hope it's a great one for all of us.
There's been a lot of stuff in the newspapers over the past few months and as most of it is completely inaccurate, I have not bothered to deny any of it.
There is one report though, that is causing concern amongst many friends of mine which was a recent report about a heart operation that I was supposed to have had.
People are ringing and texting me saying "are you ok?" and I hadn't seen the report so I was puzzled by so many enquiries about my health. So I think it's a good time to put this rumour to rest. What happened was, over a year ago during a routine medical examination, there was a minor irregularity which I needed to have tests for and which I have now been assured is completely fine. The media have only just recently reported an exaggerated version of this and that is why people have been asking me if I am ok. So this is where the story has come from. The media reports have, as usual, completely distorted the story, calling it an angioplasty, which is entirely untrue, and this is why so many friends have been concerned about my health.
I'm happy to say that I feel great and I have passed my most recent medical with flying colours.
I would like to thank all of you and my friends and relatives for your concern and I'm very happy to put your minds at rest, although I have secretly been enjoying all the sympathy I've been getting!
Once again, happy new year and remember don't believe everything you read in the media.
I look forward to a rocking 2008!
Love,
Paul

Macca rumoured to have had wrinkles removed in New York
Sir
Paul McCartney's spokesman
has denied claims that the Beatles legend has had plastic surgery
around his eyes.
Reports suggested that Macca, 65, might have had a little bit of cosmetic work in New York - but his rejuvenated look is nothing to do with going under the knife.
The large shot of Sir Paul is from October 2006 soon after his rocky marriage to Heather Mills, 40, had come to an end. Our small picture shows Sir Paul in December 2007 looking very refreshed.
No doubt the relief of finally filing for divorce helped lift a lot of strain
Meanwhile, Macca is said to have angered estranged Heather by suggesting she should open her gardens to the public to fund her divorce battle.
'Heather is in a bit of a pickle money-wise,' a source claims in the Daily Express. 'Paul has suggested some ways for her to raise funds either by selling off or renting out her properties or even opening her gardens to the public.
'Heather is furious.'
"An exhibition presenting the range of Linda's photographic work is long overdue, so I'm obviously pleased that this show is happening," the 65-year-old singer said in a statement.
"James Hyman, my daughter Mary, and I have worked on it now for three years, and the result is a sensitive selection of works that really demonstrates Linda's prodigious output as a photographer.
"The photographs not only illustrate her incredible talent as an artist, but as someone who was very much connected to the culture of the times, and wasn't afraid to challenge herself, or her subject."
The exhibition will feature pictures from the 1960s until the late 1990s, including many rarely seen works.
It will include portraits of Jim Morrison, Janice Joplin, John Lennon and Mick Jagger as well as landscapes, interiors and images of family life.
The pictures will be for sale in limited editions and authenticated with a certificate signed by McCartney. The exhibition will run from April 24 to June 7.
Paul and Linda married in 1969 and had three children together. Linda died following a battle with cancer in 1998.
McCartney went on to marry Heather Mills in 2002, but the couple split in 2006 and are in the middle of an acrimonious divorce battle. They have a daughter.
Paul McCartney
readies for 'London'
By LIZ SMITH
Later this year, we'll get
Paul McCartney singing a track on Nitin Sawhey's "London
Undersound" album. Paul, who co-wrote the song with Sawhey,
sings about how he feels regarding his estranged wife Heather Mills ...
Paul promised to produce a couple of cuts for Lulu
on her coming album. He came through, and how! Now I hear the
couple are dating exclusively, the words "head over heels"
have been used, and Paul has made the unprecedented move to include
Lulu in his next tour. If Lulu sings onstage with Paul, it will
be the first time such a pairing has occurred since he performed
with his late wife, Linda
McCartney.
These two famous Brits have kept their love under the radar, but
that can't last too long. A source close to Lulu says there's
been "a lot of staying over at Paul's place." He wants
to keep it quiet until his divorce from Heather Mills is finalized.
... She is being managed by Elton John's company, 21st Floor Management,
and is expected to tour a bit in the U.S. this summer. She is
also scheduled to sing at the Hollywood Bowl tribute to the Beatles
later in the year.
Eye feel fine:
Macca has cosmetic surgery to remove crow's-feet from around his
eyes
After all he's been through in recent times, Sir Paul McCartney could be forgiven a few worry lines.
It seems, however, that the 65-year-old singer may not have been happy with his looks.
Friends have claimed that shortly before an operation in London to correct a heart murmur, he had cosmetic surgery in New York to rejuvenate his face.

The work, they say, was to remove crow's-feet from around his eyes, and also sagging skin from beneath and above them.
The result is a face that appears much younger and stress-free.
Photos taken earlier last year showed how his divorce from Heather Mills was taking its toll.
Sir Paul frequently looked worn down, with excessive wrinkling around his eyes.
While the operation to increase blood flow to his heart in September will undoubtedly have helped with the movement of blood around his face, giving him a rosier complexion, that would not explain the disappearance of the saggy skin.
Some cosmetic surgery experts have said he appeared to have the tell-tale signs of work to improve his looks. London plastic surgeon Alex Karidis said: "His lower eyelids look different. On the newer pictures, that area is a lot clearer."
He added that the pictures "would suggest that there has been some surgery to take some of the excess skin away from the eyelids.
"He definitely has less skin above both eyes than before."
But plastic surgeon Dr. Lucy Clancey was more cautious, saying: "There is an ever so slight improvement.
"I would also say that he has lost a lot of weight in between the two pictures."
Sir Paul's spokesman rubbished the notion that he may have had surgery.
As the singer's divorce edges closer to a potentially ruinous court case next month, his relationship with Miss Mills has never been more fraught.
The pair had a series of rows
(arguments) over Christmas.

BIRTHDAY PARTY RUINED
Sir Paul McCartney's estranged
wife Heather Mills saw her recent 40th birthday party ruined after
her house flooded.
The former glamour model - who is currently locked in a bitter
divorce battle with the Beatles legend - invited dozens of guests
to the celebration which were held in a marquee (tent) at her
East Sussex, England, mansion on Saturday (January 12). But Mills'
guests were shocked to find the house draped in tarpaulin after
heavy rain had caused the roof to leak, flooding the top floors
of the property.
A source tells British newspaper the Daily Mirror, "It was
distressing for Heather - her bedroom was soaked."
Mills is planning on moving back to her former home in Brighton,
England, after selling the nine-bedroom East Sussex property in
a bid to pay her spiralling legal bills.

Heather snubs neighbours
Heather Mills snubbed her neighbours
when she celebrated her 40th birthday (January 12) - so they blasted
out Beatles hits as her guests arrived.
Heather's friends were greeted by the sounds of Hey Jude echoing
from the house opposite her East Sussex mansion.
The ex-wife of Beatle legend Paul McCartney invited some neighbours
to the bash, but left others off the guest list.
Claire Patterson, 24, who lives in a bungalow opposite the Mills
estate, said: "I'm a Macca fan not a Mucca fan. I can't believe
we didn't get an invite, but the neighbours opposite did. It's
so rude.
"When we have a party, we invite everyone. Anyone is welcome.
But it seems we weren't wanted."
Her mum Gloria, 47, a big Beatles fan, threw a little party of
her own and cranked up the volume on her stereo as it blasted
out the band's greatest hits.
Gloria said: "We're fine out here. And anyone is welcome
to our party."

Macca sends
Mucca £8k birthday gifts and friendly note... while she
hires spies to get dirt on him
Generous Sir
Paul McCartney spent £8,000
($16,000) on birthday gifts for Heather Mills
- while she was secretly hiring a firm to SPY on him.
Macca's driver delivered a £2,000 ($4,000 ) CARTIER WATCH, a £5,000 ($10,000) GIFT CARD from Harvey Nichols, plus bags stuffed with top-of-the range BEAUTY GOODIES.
A touching handwritten card
to her said: "Have an amazing day, despite what's happened.
Hope we can be friends. P x."
Booze
But as Paul was holding out an olive branch in their bitter split, Mucca - who turned 40 yesterday - was in attack mode.
She was arranging for an ex-SAS trooper and former M15 spook to try and make Sir Paul look like a bad dad.
Heather is terrified he will apply for full custody of four-year-old daughter Beatrice when their divorce hearing resumes next month.
So she desperately hopes to snatch film footage of him DRUNK during the day.
Mucca originally hired the team of private eyes from Ireland for a week before Christmas to spy on former Beatle Sir Paul, 65-who had a big hit with Hey Jude.
But her muck-raking was scuppered-and she was forced to pay a £1,500 ($3,000) cancellation fee-because he was still recovering from a heart op and not drinking.
Heather has rebooked the £1,500-per-day spies for a week-long watch later this month, when they will try and get secret film of Sir Paul boozing.
A source said: "Heather was furious when she had to cancel the first watch. She was convinced Paul was going to go out with a friend on a drinking session, and that she would be able to catch him. To be honest, if Sir Paul wants to go out with a friend and have a few drinks it has no bearing on his capability as a parent.
"But Heather is clutching at anything she can to make Paul look bad."
But while she was plotting, Paul was on Friday sending the birthday gifts-which also included drawings made by little Beatrice at nursery.
One was of the three of them as a family-which he had framed.
Other presents in the goody bag included KANEBO COSMETICS, LA PRAIRIE skin-care products and CHARLES WORTHINGTON hair-care treats.
The warring pair currently have joint custody of Bea. Mucca looks after her from Tuesday afternoon until Friday afternoon, when Macca takes over until Tuesday lunchtime.
It was thought the temporary arrangement-agreed after the couple split in May 2006-would continue when the divorce was finalised at London's High Court.
The five-day hearing next month will also decide how much of Paul's £800 million ($1.6 billion) fortune Heather will get. But she now fears he will instruct his lawyers to fight for him to be Bea's primary carer.
It follows Mucca's series of TV interviews when she ranted about him-and a several rows over Christmas that ended in her threatening to take their daughter to live in the States.
Earlier this month it was revealed Sir Paul had had a coronary angioplasty-a heart procedure to open up arteries and allow a greater blood flow.
The spy plan is the latest covert tactic used in the pair's bitter divorce war.
Sir Paul's phones at his mansion
in Peasmarsh, East Sussex, were bugged and revealed embarrassing
chats between him and daughter Stella, when
they mocked Heather for having one leg.
Money
Heather is desperate for the divorce settlement-she is living on a £1million ($2 million) overdraft from Coutts bank, and owes her former divorce lawyers Mishcon de Reya £2 million ($4 million).
Our source said: "Since her campaign to get the public's sympathy went wrong, Heather has racked her brains for ways to discredit Paul.
"This plan with the private investigators is her latest idea. But by going to such extremes to make him look bad, she's just made herself look even worse."
Sir Paul is ecstatic after
meeting his latest grandchild -Stella's third baby-on Friday night.
The beaming singer was introduced to Beckett Robert Lee Willis, born last Tuesday (January 8), at the
fashion designer's London home.

McCARTNEY WRITES SONG ABOUT MILLS
Sir Paul McCartney
has written a song about his
ongoing divorce battle with Heather Mills.
The Beatles legend has consistently refused to comment about the
former couple's current legal wranglings but is now set to reveal
his true feelings about his estranged wife in a collaboration
with a British musician.
McCartney, 65, has teamed up with Nitin Sawhney for a track on
his forthcoming album London Undersound which is due for release
later this year .
And Sawhney insists the song will be a shock to McCartney's fans.
He says, "Paul has done a track about how he feels about
Heather and what was going on with the paparazzi because no one
has heard his side of it at all - so this will be the first time
anyone hears a song relating to that subject. It's very emotional
and a very powerful song - not like anything that people are used
to Paul McCartney doing."
Mills and McCartney - who split in May 2006 - are due to appear
in court to continue negotiations over their divorce settlement
in February.

Paul McCartney 'refused to stop drinking' despite doctors' warning
about his heart condition
Sir Paul McCartney refused
to give up drinking despite doctors warning him that it did not
mix with a drug he was being given for a heart condition, it has
been claimed.
The 65-year-old was diagnosed with a heart murmur more than two years ago as his marriage to Heather Mills began to deteriorate in extremely stressful circumstances, it was alleged.
He was put on the blood-thinning drug Warfarin (Coumadin) to try to correct the condition, and even has had electricshock treatment since 2005.
The emergence of the heart murmur coincided with the breakdown of his marriage to Miss Mills, which ended in May 2006 after months of arguments.
Sir Paul McCartney 'refused to stop drinking' during his divorce to Heather Mills, despite his heart murmur, reports have claimed
It is alleged that despite being told by doctors that alcohol consumption does not mix well with the anti-coagulant drug, he refused to stop drinking. That refusal is said to have led to a number of rows with his now-estranged wife.
It emerged last week that Sir Paul had coronary angioplasty operation to increase blood flow to his heart in September.
A source told a U.S. newspaper: "This was a major source of problems between him and Heather Mills.
"He was receiving electrical shocks over the two years on his chest to help with his heart and was under strict instructions to stop drinking completely, which he didn't do. It's not a threatening condition, he just needs to take better care of himself."
It was even claimed yesterday that Miss Mills postponed a hip operation in April 2006 for her husband to have heart treatment.
The source told the New York Post: "He was abusing his body. She (Mills) focused on him first."
A source close to Sir Paul yesterday attacked the claims, suggesting they were stories planted by Miss Mills or her LA-based publicist Michele Elyzabeth in the run-up to the couple's divorce proceedings in the High Court in London next month.
Sir Paul's publicist would not comment on the claims.

Mucca demands: buy me a new house
Warring Sir
Paul McCartney and his ex
Heather Mills launched the new year with a bitter row
over her money problems.
Cash-strapped Mucca demanded Sir Paul hand her and their four-year-old daughter Beatrice a home close to his estate-just in case she is forced to sell her £3 million ($6 million) country mansion.
The ex-model, who owes £2 million ($4 million) to lawyers, asked Macca to fork out for another home - believed to be a £600,000 ($1.2 million ) property in Sussex.
Already furious over their divorce wrangles, Sir Paul told Heather: "Live within your means." And he suggested she sell her spare £1.1million Brighton seaside house instead "if you're so poor".
An insider said: "Sir
Paul is fed up with Heather. He thinks she has cheek to ask him
for a new home."

McCARTNEY LIKENS MINOGUE TO HIS LATE LINDA
Sir Paul McCartney is a big fan of Australian pop star Kylie
Minogue- because her strength and courage during her battle with
cancer reminds him of his late first wife, Linda.
The Spinning Around singer, 39, is in remission after beating
breast cancer in 2005, and McCartney thinks highly of the way
she dealt with her trauma to return to the music industry so strongly.
A source tells British newspaper The Mirror, "Paul really
admires Kylie. He has an affinity with her. The way she coped
with cancer with dignity reminds him of Linda." Linda McCartney
lost her fight against breast cancer in 1998, aged 56.
It
wasn't a yellow submarine. But it was all Sir Paul McCartney needed to show that he is in good health after
his heart operation.
A friend revealed he had had the surgery in September but said fans have nothing to worry about - as this picture proves.
After a tumultuous year in which he has battled his ex-wife Heather Mills for a divorce settlement, had heart surgery, and continued to perform around the world, the former Beatle has finally found some peace and quiet.
The 65-year-old has taken a holiday in the Caribbean to get away from it all, having a sail over the tropical waters.
Wearing red flowery shorts and a black t-Shirt, he seemed relaxed as he concentrated on controlling the boat during his stay at a luxury resort in Jamaica.
The holiday is a welcome break from his bitter divorce with Heather Mills, with whom he has been locked in a custody battle over their four-year-old daughter, Beatrice.
The couple split 18 months ago but have yet to agree what sum of Sir Paul's £800 million ($1.6 billion) fortune Ms Mills will receive.
She made numerous uncomfortable appearances on TV last year unleashing her anger on Sir Paul and the media.
The 39-year-old said she had been driven to the brink of suicide by how she has been perceived by the public because of their failed relationship.
Meanwhile, Sir Paul McCartney had heart surgery in September to open the arteries of his heart.
He had been complained of feeling unwell and doctors advised he have the coronary angioplasty - symptons of which can be brought on by stress.
Despite his health and stressful private life, the musician has also not wanted to disappoint his fans, continuing to perform around the world.
No wonder he wanted to sail
away.

Heather fury as McCartney gets close to Kylie
Heather Mills was left angry and distraught after watching Sir Paul McCartney "flirting" with Kylie Minogue live on TV.
Macca
whooped and cheered as Kylie writhed on top of Jools Holland's
grand piano in a sexy New Year's Eve routine.
Heather watched in dismay as her estranged husband then joined the singer for a cosy duet - even hugging her at the end. Friends of Heather's say she convinced herself his show of affection was a cruel public pot-shot.
One said: "She's really mad about the way Paul got close to Kylie. She reckons he did it on purpose and feels it was a deliberate public dig at her.
"She thinks he's just trying to prove a point, that he's moved on and is comfortable around other women. She was so hurt she burst into tears."
Heather's latest outburst comes after a string of spats between the battling pair as they prepare for a five-day public divorce battle in the High Court next month.
It proves how bitter the break-up has become, with almost everything they do seen as a calculated swipe.
Sir Paul and Kylie were special guests for Jools Holland's annual Hootenanny on BBC2.
After her raunchy solo, Jools asked Macca, 65, who he had enjoyed watching most, and he replied enthusiastically: "Kylie!"
He then joined 39-year-old Kylie on stage to sing his song Dance Tonight and at the end embraced her, lifting her off the ground.
"Heather was seething, seeing his flirting as an attempt to humiliate her," the friend said.
"She thinks he's kidding himself if he thinks he'd stand a chance with Kylie anyway."
But Sir Paul's friends say he has a genuine admiration for the star, who bravely battled breast cancer two years ago.
She even reminds him of first wife Linda, who died from the disease almost 10 years ago. A source close to Macca said: "Paul really admires Kylie. He has an affinity with her.
"The way she coped with cancer with dignity reminds him of Linda. She's the complete opposite to Heather.
"Paul once mentioned he'd like to record a track with Kylie. Although it's not known how serious he was, it wouldn't surprise me that if he knew it would anger Heather, he'd be more likely to record a duet.
"If they did, and it was a hit, it would be another blow to Heather because in the early stage of their relationship, he supported her on a track she recorded.
"But it didn't go anywhere. It was for charity but Heather wanted a hit to lift her own status in the music world."
The source added: "She's said in the past she has more musical talent than Paul because she was trained classically and he wasn't. She even claims he can't read music. But the bottom line is, he's the legendary musician - she isn't."
Heather, 40 this week, was already angry after Macca reportedly lavished £15,000 ($30,000) on gifts for their daughter Bea, three, including 20 outfits from Harrods and 10 Barbie dolls.
She felt Macca was trying to show her up and Barbie was a bad role model for Bea.
And when they met at Christmas to exchange Beatrice, Heather accused Macca of being sarcastic when he wished her a happy Christmas.
Since the split Heather claims she is now in so much debt she will have to sell the £3.25 million $6.5 million) house Macca bought her to keep Bea close to him.
The source said: "When they first split 18 months ago and Heather was looking for £200 million ($400 million)she turned her nose up at the thought Paul may offer her £50 million ($100 million).
"If he offered that now, she'd almost kiss the ground in front of him, she's that strapped for cash."
Last November, Heather claimed on GMTV she had been suicidal. The divorce has also taken its toll on Macca, who had heart surgery in September.
The source said: "Heather knows Paul's daughters are worried about his health and how much the divorce is stressing him out. If anything they'll push Paul to give more money, to settle quickly.
"At first she had been advised to drag things out because she'd be more likely to get more money, but now she has mounting debts, she needs to settle."
It's hardly a yellow submarine, but Paul McCartney showed he is still in good health after his heart op as he hit the waters of the Caribbean.
The ex-Beatle was all action as he took out a small sailboat with a yellow stripe during a holiday at a luxury resort in Jamaica.
It comes just days after it emerged he had undergone a coronary angioplasty to open blocked arteries in his heart.
A friend revealed he had the operation in September but that fans have nothing to worry about - and Paul's latest adventure certainly proves it.
The 65-year-old returned to his favorite resort on the island, Montego Bay's Round Hill Hotel, a year after spending a break there with his daughter Beatrice. Then he was also seen sailing a similar boat - as well as wearing exactly the same red shorts with a flower pattern.
This time he again took the boat out by himself and showed no signs of health problems. He could also be seen looking relaxed as he talked to other guests afterwards.
The holiday will be a welcome break for the singer, after his bitter break-up with Heather Mills once again hit the news over Christmas.
According to reports, the ex-model accused him of trying to buy their daughters' love with $30k in gifts.
In a bust-up during a hand-over of the four-year-old, Heather reportedly also took the opportunity to threaten him that she would take Beatrice to live with her in the U.S.

Paul McCartney and Ozzy Osbourne won't sing together at Brits
Rumors of a duet between Paul McCartney and Ozzy Osbourne at this year's Brits have been rubbished by the award show's bosses.
The legendary music gods were reported to be collaborating on a unique version of Bond theme Live And Let Die for the music bash at London's Earls 4Court on 20 February.
"It is not true at all," says a spokesperson. "Someone made it up."
58-year-old Ozzy who will be hosting the ceremony with wife Sharon, 55 is still nervous because he's concerned about making a fool of himself in front of his idol.
"The Brits have been playing on Ozzy's mind," a pal told Britain's Daily Star newspaper. "He's worried about coming a cropper in front of Macca."
Sir Paul, 65, will receive
the Outstanding Contribution To Music gong at the award show to
held in London later this year.

Pop Talk: McCartney Gets Back to Where He Once Belonged
Paul McCartney, world-class slacker?
"I have a knack of looking busy, without doing anything at all," chortled the former Beatle as he steered his car through a driving rain near his rural home in Sussex, England. "It's all a matter of perception."
Denials to the contrary, this legendary musician and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee appears to be busier than ever.
His
latest album, the atypically personal Memory Almost Full, was
recently re-released with three additional songs, two videos,
and a bonus DVD of five songs that he and his band recorded at
a London club show in June. He has a new five-song live CD that
was recorded when he and his band performed later the same month
at Amoeba Records in Hollywood.
He also filmed a recent concert at the Olympia Theater in Paris, where The Beatles made their French debut in 1964.
Then there's the DVD version of The Beatles' 1965 feature film, Help! Its title might reflect some of the challenges McCartney has faced following his very public split from his second wife, Heather Mills.
"I'm going through a bit of a notorious divorce at the moment," he said. "I really don't want to talk about it, except to say that I'd probably like to get that all cleared up before I think about a tour. I'd like to go out with the band next year and get back to America, but there's no definite plans yet."
What is definite is that, at 65, James Paul McCartney isn't slowing down, even though his near-billionaire status means he could have retired years ago had he wanted.
Despite the fact that he can neither read nor write music, the man once known as "the cute Beatle" is now composing his first guitar concerto. He's also looking forward to making more solo albums.
"I'm just trying to keep on enjoying my music and seeing if it can be improved, to just continue and hopefully develop what I do," he said. But he's also in a reflective mood, thanks to The McCartney Years. The three-disc set features 42 music videos and two hours of live footage, including 22 songs culled from a 1976 concert with his post-Beatles band, Wings, a 1991 MTV Unplugged show, and a 2004 performance at England's Glastonbury festival.
"I like what I do," he said. "But since I have reached the venerable age of 65, it's tempting to think: 'Whoa! I must be looking back.' But when you think about it, songs like 'Penny Lane,' which I wrote when I was about 24, are retrospective in a way. So I suppose it's true that most writers are always looking back and drawing on the experiences of their youth."
Looking back is precisely what he does with the extensive audio commentary he provides on The McCartney Years, which includes videos shot between 1970 and 2005.
The result, which at times suggests an episode of the old TV show This Is Your Life, makes one wonder what it was like for McCartney to revisit his past in such detail.
"Like drowning!" he replied. "They always say you feel like you're drowning when you're dying. I don't know how 'they' know, but they suggest your life is flashing by in front of your eyes. That's the nearest thing I can think of, but it was more like in warm, soapy water, drowning pleasantly. No, I'm kidding.
"It's quite amazing," he said. "It's like looking through all your scrapbooks at once. You always assume there will be a day in a year where you look through the old snapshots of your family, but I find I don't look at them as much as I want. A project like this forces you to do that. It was a bit like looking through old photo albums and thinking: 'Oh, yeah. Gosh, that was good.' "
Was he surprised by what he saw?
"It pleased me that most of it seemed better than I'd [originally] thought it was," McCartney said. "Maybe the music videos look better in retrospect than they did at the time, so that was kind of a nice thing, and some of it looked really good. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall package. I thought: 'Yeah, this is OK, this is good value for the money, fans will like this.' And the people who put it together with me, who did most of the work, put in some really nice touches. They said: 'Let's put in everything we can.' There's not an awful lot we left out."
For devotees, The McCartney Years offers treats large and small.
At one point, McCartney recalls how Stevie Wonder instructed him to make his hand claps more rhythmically precise when they recorded "Ebony and Ivory." Then there's the very rare on-film cameo by Beatles album producer George Martin, who plays piano in the video for "Take It Away." And during the "London Town" video, Linda McCartney, Paul's wife for 29 years until her death in 1998, laughs uproariously when he breaks into a clumsy but endearing dance."We're not actors or dancers," he said, "so a lot of what we did was spontaneous. We weren't trying to get too serious with it; there's just a natural chemistry. That's one of the good things about the collection.
"Again, it's like looking at your scrapbook, and saying: 'There we are at Niagara Falls or going over the Golden Gate Bridge.' When you look at enough of them all at once, you do get a feeling. You think: 'Look at us! Aren't we cute?' "
While not intended as such, many of the videos McCartney and his wife made early on after their 1969 marriage seem like a valentine to her when viewed now. His love for Linda is still apparent when he talks about her, and their joint video appearances in The McCartney Years provide some of its most touching moments.
"I think it was just how it was," he said. "I was very lucky. We had a great time together, just raising our family, and I think it shows. I was just watching the videos as they were made, so it's nice that [our love] came across. It wasn't artificial; it just happened."
While The Beatles pioneered music videos after they stopped touring in 1966, it's intriguing that McCartney filmed so many of them, as a solo artist and with Wings, since there was such limited use for them in the 1960s and '70s, before MTV.
"Originally, of course, there was no need to do anything on TV," he agreed. "Because the only thing you did is appear on a program. You just did your record on a package show, like Top of the Pops, that had all the Top 20 people on it.
"Then that started to widen out, that spectrum, and you started to think: 'Well, seeing as we're not going to be on those shows, they'll play a promotional film or video instead.' With The Beatles you could send them out around the world, so it became the fashion to make those. They were very rough and ready. Because we didn't know what we were doing, we just had fun with it. I think some of the modern videos that do that are the most successful. They have a real innocence to them."
McCartney's anecdotes in his DVD collection have a similar air of innocence. While this results in some marginally interesting reminiscences, the overall result is like sitting down for a nostalgic chat with the ex-Beatle that ebbs and flows.
"It was pretty much stream-of-consciousness," he said. "When the guys making the DVD said they wanted me to do a commentary, I said: 'Stick it up in front of me, like I'm watching TV, and I'll just talk oh, yeah, I remember this - and we'll see what we get. Some of it will be boring, but hopefully enough of it will be interesting.'
"I didn't really think too hard; it was whatever came into my mind. I think what happens with those kinds of memories is that if you're telling the same stories, you tend to remember the same stories. I do. I'm very boring. I tell the same story endlessly."
Sir Paul McCartney is fighting fit after undergoing a secret heart procedure, according to friends.
The former Beatle had a coronary angioplasty in September last year to open blocked arteries.
A friend of the star said: "It was a routine procedure and Paul is in excellent health. Fans certainly have no need to worry.
"He immediately returned to a busy schedule, performing in Paris and London the following month.
"Anyone who saw him singing with Kylie on Jools Holland's BBC2 show on New Year's Eve will have seen that he is back on top form."
Sir Paul, 65, underwent the procedure at a private London hospital.
He is understood to have grown concerned about heart problems in 2006 and doctors monitored his health.
The operation comes as Sir
Paul continues to battle estranged wife Heather Mills
in the divorce courts.

Paul and Heather in furious festive bust-up over Macca's £15,000
($30,000) presents for Beatrice
It may be the season of goodwill - but relations between Heather Mills and Sir Paul McCartney have
reached a new low.
The pair - who split 18 months ago - had a series of spectacular rows over Christmas, the first when they met to exchange Beatrice, their four-year-old daughter.
Miss Mills, who owes her former divorce lawyers £2 million ($4 million), accused her estranged husband of stringing out the settlement talks to "starve her out".
She
also claimed he was trying to buy his daughter's affection by
showering her with £15,000 of Christmas gifts.
And she warned that the divorce hearing could turn nasty, even threatening to move to the U.S. with Beatrice.
Sources close to the McCartney family said the arguments had made for a miserable Christmas.
"It all started off at the handover of Beatrice," one told the Mail. "Paul said to Heather, in what she evidently thought was a sarcastic tone, 'Happy Christmas'.
"Heather replied, 'Happy f***ing Christmas?'. And with that, she laid into him - saying she thought he'd ruined Beatrice's Christmas by not settling the divorce by now.
"She told him that she was on the edge, at her wits' end and really feeling under pressure financially." The source said Sir Paul had advised Miss Mills to raise money by remortgaging the £3.5 million ($7 million) house he had bought for her. "It was at that point that Heather started pleading with him that she was desperate for it not to go to court, because she couldn't afford good lawyers. She said that it could turn very nasty if that happened.
"Paul came back saying it had all gone too far to go back now.
"He criticised her again for that notorious rant on GMTV, saying that broke the agreement they had."
The pair found themselves raking over familiar ground - increasingly vocally, said the source.
"Heather came back telling him he was just trying to starve her out.
"She was ranting. saying how mean he was being in the so-called season of goodwill. Tensions flared up again when Beatrice received her presents from her father."
The Mail has learned that she was given a top-of-the-range sound system, a karaoke machine, a miniature car, Barbie dolls, dress outfits, a large selection of classical and pop CDs, an electric guitar and a keyboard player.
"Heather felt that Paul had really gone to town on the presents just to show her up," added the source.
"Against Heather's presents of books about natural history and clothes and some pretty, girly things for her, Paul's presents really stood out."
The source said Miss Mills also felt that Sir Paul's choices were inappropriate.
"She was saying what a terrible role model Barbie was for Bea.
"And she was saying how annoyed she was that Paul appeared to be trying to push her into music.
"The truth of it, of course, was more likely that Paul just wanted to make it a Christmas to remember for Bea."
Awkward encounter: Heather handing over Beatrice to Sir Paul during the summer as part of their agreed custody agreement
Miss Mills, the source said, hit back by suggesting she might want to move with Beatrice to the U.S. - where offers "have been pouring in".
The source added: "Heather knows how to push Paul's buttons."
Miss Mills is also said to have brought into the discussion her urgent need for hip surgery, which might delay their divorce proceedings.
The couple are due to go to court in February unless they settle before then.
Spokesmen for both Miss Mills and Sir Paul would not comment last night.
Sir Paul McCartney
had heart surgery as divorce row raged
Sir Paul McCartney had heart
surgery amid the continuing strain of his split from Heather Mills.
The 65-year-old had complained of feeling unwell after a series of stressful rows with his estranged wife over the custody of their daughter.
It emerged that doctors advised he have
coronary angioplasty - an operation to open the arteries of his
heart.
The procedure was carried out at a private hospital in September.
Friends of the Beatle said that his fans should not be alarmed at the development.
One said: "It was a routine procedure and Paul is in excellent health. Fans certainly have no need to worry.
"He immediately returned to a busy schedule, performing in Paris and London the following month."
Medical experts say extreme stress can "unmask" conditions such as Sir Paul's.
Dr Duncan Dymond, a consultant cardiologist at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, said: "While stress does not cause heart disease it can bring out the symptoms.
"Fat builds up in the arteries over decades but an event of physical or emotional stress can unmask the disease.
"Symptoms may feel like the tightening of the chest or a heaviness in the chest. I would advise avoiding stress as much as possible. Although sometimes that is just plain impossible."
The Christmas period has been especially fraught for Sir Paul as bitter divorce proceedings over his four year marriage remain unresolved.
Despite splitting up 18 months ago he and Miss Mills are no closer to reaching agreement over custody of four-year-old Beatrice or how to divide Sir Paul's £800 million ($1.6 billion) fortune.
The pair have had a series of blazing rows over Christmas with Miss Mills even threatening to move to the US with their daughter...
They will meet again in court next month unless they can settle the case before then.
Sir Paul follows a healthy diet and exercise programme to stay fit but despite this he has been unable to avoid the build up of fat inside his body.
To perform a coronary angioplasty surgeons pass a fine tube from the patient's groin to the aorta - the heart's main artery.
A small balloon is inflated at the point at which the artery has narrowed in order to squash fatty deposits that have built up.
When the balloon is removed a short wire mesh tube is often left to prop open that portion of the artery. Around 40,000 have the operation in the UK every year.
Heather Mills claimed in November
that the stressful divorce battle had pushed her to the brink
of suicide.
Sir Paul McCartney has had a secret heart operation, it was revealed last night.
The 65-year-old had a coronary angioplasty, which opens up arteries and allows greater flow of blood.
It was performed in a private hospital in the autumn (WEBMASTER'S NOTE: It was originally reported that he saw the Harley St. doctor in early August) after he saw a Harley Street specialist at the London Clinic. The former Beatle is said to have recovered well.
Macca appeared on Jools Holland's BBC2 New Year Special and sang his hit "Dance Tonight" with Kylie Minogue.
It had been rumoured for months that Macca had heart problems. A close friend said: "Paul felt there was something not quite right and luckily sought professional help.
"It's not something that can be left to chance. Thankfully the operation went well and Paul feels great."

Macca has a secret heart op
Sir Paul McCartney
has had a secret heart operation, it was revealed last night.
The 65-year-old megastar underwent coronary angioplasty - a procedure that opens up arteries and allows a greater flow of blood.
A source said: "Paul had been complaining about not feeling well and saw a Harley Street specialist at The London Clinic.
"Tests were carried out and the decision was taken to operate. Paul had the angioplasty in a private hospital. It was all very routine but any work on your heart is a big deal."
Ex-Beatle Macca made a good recovery - and looked on fine form as he joined Kylie Minogue to perform his hit Dance Tonight during Jools Holland's BBC2 New Year special.
A friend of the legend said: "Luckily Paul is in very good shape. He does regular exercise and is fit.
"He eats well and does not carry any excess weight. He has always been in exceptional health, which is remarkable when you think of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle he once had."
Surgeons perform coronary angioplasty by passing a fine tube in through the groin and up to the aorta.
A small balloon at the tip of the tube is inflated at the narrowest part of an artery to squash fatty deposits clogging it and allow blood to flow freely again.
A stent - a short wire-mesh tube - is usually left in to prop open that segment of artery.
Soccer ace David Beckham's dad Ted, 59, had the op after he collapsed at home with a heart attack.
Sir Paul and bitter wife Heather, 39, have still not reached a financial settlement over the collapse of their four-year marriage.
A five-day High Court hearing next month will try to decide how much she should receive from Macca's £800 million ($1.6 billion) fortune. The couple must also work out details for custody of their four-year-old daughter Beatrice.
Heather was dumped by celebrity lawyers Mishcon de Reya after TV rants about her marriage. She faces a demand for £2 million ($4 million) legal fees.
Last night Macca's spokesman said of the hush-hush angioplasty performed in the autumn: "It was a routine medical operation."
Sun GP Dr Carol Cooper said:
"About 40,000 angioplasty ops are done each year in the UK
because it's a very good way of treating severe angina symptoms
and the success rate is at least 90 per cent."
