Pilot G2 Pro Just a Barrel (4th April 06)


Just got information last week from Pilot that there will be a new pen release called Pilot G-2 Pro. This so called Pro version is no different from the normal G2 except for its barrel. In fact, it was launched in end Jan 2006 in USA. "Stylish high end" design, retractable, same gel ink, contoured rubber grip, really not much different to me except for the price and the thicker barrel. I put these two pens into a pen stand that erects currently 50 other pens, they just cann't distinguish themselves from the rest really.

Engraving Difference of MOLESKINE (9th March 06)


Is there such a difference in yours? I've only checked and compared my own pocket size Moleskines, not sure if this is happening to other sizes and models as well. I should probably go to the stores and find out. If you look closely to these picture, you see the newer M I have has a different thickness or boldness of the engraved words. The newer one is thinner. Another difference is the color of the bookmark, newer one is darker, more greyish than the previous pink brown....

An Interview with Present Time CEO Andrew Fidder (9th March 06)

Today I had a great pleasure meeting Andrew Fidder, CEO of Present Time. Andrew is super energetic and talks about a lot of things including the countries/cities he goes, the food he likes, how he acquired this company 4 years ago and expanded Present Time to be an international company. At the moment we sat down in a cafe to talk about business, instantly I realized that he pulled out his pocket size Moleskine and started asking things about me and jotted them down.

Right after the meeting, I asked if Andrew would tell me more about how he uses his Moleskine and I also gave him 30 to 45 seconds for a video presentation. When it was shooting time, this guy just popped into speech and presentation mode and gave me a 44 second pitch video!

Captured here is the very first instance of the MOLESKINE minute with Andrew Fidder. Well, the idea came up after Andrew gave me such a nice presentation. I will probably ask everybody to submit their MOLESKINE minute, which means a less than 1 minute video presentation of their M life.



Washington Post Article on Moleskine (6th March 06)

Dan Morse from Washington Post wrote an article "Putting Pen to Paper Anew" on 20th Feb 06 about "one of the odder trends of the instant-information age" which "Moleskine use has erupted in Washington and elsewhere, driven in part by a subculture of tech-savvy people otherwise electronically gadgeted to the hilt". Moleskine Soft Cover 2006 Diary Revealed (2nd February 06)

I guess unofficially I can show what's next to come for Moleskine. I visited Paperworld in Frankfurt last week and European distributor Authentic already showed the new new Moleskine diary. From what I heard, this soft cover moleskine comes in two sizes (a pocket version and a desk version) and starts from July 2006 to December 2007. Similar to Quo Vadis they would like to catch an earlier season for schools instead of competing with everybody for the year-end market. The pocket version is ultra portable and feel so good to touch and bend, the desk version is large enough and lie flat on your desk. Check out the details in the following images.


Large size soft cover diary is 19x25cm, 144 pages. Pocket size is 9x14cm, 200 pages. Both with expandable inner pockets. Soft to touch and bend.


Pocket size holds a lot of extra information such as timetable and 30 months planning. There is a never before seen disclaimer and rights reserved note to prohibit reproduction of the content inside the diary.

Moleskine Watercolor Revealed (6th December 05)

As promised, now I can reveal the pictures I took of these samples. They should be ready for retailers to order soon and expect to arrive Hong Kong around Feb 2006. Remember there are a few more new products that I can't show right now, but I'll keep everybody informed. Enjoy.




Moleskine Diaries 2006 Display AND Things I'm Not Allowed to Tell (23rd November 05)


Recently I changed the store display in Times Square, making Quo Vadis and Moleskine diaries displays more brand focused. Currently we have 4 M diary styles for people to choose from, in about 10 months I'm sure the Limited Edition red pocket diary with notebook will come out. The red color used in the Feltrinelli version is the store's corporate color, it matches the exact Pantone, but I heard that the new Limited Edition diary for world distribution will retain this Pantone red.

Now the juice is here. Today I touched the actual prototypes of a few new models, I even took pictures but I'm not allowed to share with everybody for now, but these I can tell:

  • Watercolor Notebook: Pocket and Large size, due to arrive Hong Kong about Feb 2006. 60/72 detachable pages, heavy paper 200 gsm - 25% cotton fiber - cold pressed, expandable pocket, no bookmark. To get the best quality paper that has same quality surface for both sides of a page, Modo&Modo sourced the paper from France. You use these watercolor notebook horizontally even though the format is same as Reporter, i.e. elastic band on shorter length of the sides.
  • Limited Edition Red Pocket Diary: same as Feltrinelli version but due to arrive for 2007 usage.
  • Really-Can't-Tell-U-But-I'm-Thrilled Moleskine: soft, feel good to touch, in 3 sizes, due to arrive around May/June 2006.... oh can I show the pictures please? One thing I found very interesting is that Modo&Modo is protecting the Moleskine brand in every aspect possible, which is very valid in order to not having other people taking advantages off this great brand. In this new product range I found at the beginning of the pages a small note: "All rights reserved. No part or whole of this publication may be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording or otherwise, without the prior permission of the publisher. Every care has been taken in the compilation of the information in this xxxxx, but no responsibility can be accepted for the accuracy of the data presented." Want to guess what this really is? Send me an email, I'll tell when I'm allowed to tell.

BTW, somehow I want a really nice storage box for my pocket diaries and notebooks, can anybody tell me how to find a good solution?

My Moleskine Exhibition in Japan (3rd November 05)

It was an amazing exhibition done by collecting hundreds of artists' work, many whom are famous, and they are on display in the entire October in Japan in various places. Mentioned here in Tokyo Art Beat. Participating venues included Aoyama Book Center in Aoyama, Tsutaya Tokyo in Roppongi Hills, NADiff in Aoyama and Tower Records in Shibuya. You should be able to see the nice displays by clicking on the icon above. I guess this is the largest Moleskine exhibition ever launched. Hopefully it will arrive Hong Kong early next year.

How to be Creative (3rd November 05)


When people say you are creative and you don't think so, there must be certain reasons and I suspect the little thing you do to yourself makes a whole lot of difference. Just promise yourself to capture every single idea (in Moleskine?) and when you have the urge to do a thing about them just don't hesitate, but iterate and iterate and iterate. (this is actually some I drew for the store, to introduce people the website and to ask them to leave some penprint)

Rhodia Pencil, Notepad Set and Notepad Cover (2nd November 05)


I just got information from distributor that Rhodia is going to produce a very beautiful pencil with the brand's signature orange color. It will probably arrive Hong Kong early next year. In addition, there will be a gift set containing a few Rhodia notepads packaged in a very nice box. I haven't seen it but according to distributor it looks gorgeous. Finally, it has been a while in Japan that retailers offer Rhodia notepad cover in PVC with the brand name embossed on the cover, I personally don't really like the quality but eventually I think we'll be able to see them in different colors in the market. On a side note, I love leather covers created by a Japanese company called Slip-on, they produced Rhodia leather cover in various colors and now they offer Moleskine cover in a series called Buttero. Do check them out if you have a chance, I have been using their leather pass case and quality is exceptional. I think Slip-on has a cooperation with a tannery in Italy, which is a member of the consortium called Vera Pelle.

M.bian Case Preview (30th October 05)


A few months ago I figured that finding a perfect case for my M was near impossible. There are several possible solutions from the market, ranging from USD34 to USD135 (One Lisa Laughy is selling in Ninth Wave Designs called Traveler Gift Set and one from a collaboration between Porter x Paper Sky). But all these don't fit my requirements. I first listed what features I wanted for my M case, drew some sketches and asked a vendor to make samples. After a few months of slight but frequent changes I finally get it right, for myself. So now I'm happily carrying M on my waist or backpack with the option to put 3 of my favorite pens into the pen holders. Further, there are several pockets that is good to insert normal M or Reporter inside the case. It can also be used as a travel pouch, i.e. to put any small objects I need to carry during my business trips. I also added a small opening on the back of the case for headphone access in case I want to use it as an iPod carrying case. The inner pockets allow me to put USB2.0 cable, recorder, iPod and headphone pretty easily. Now I am ready to produce the product but I need to know if any of you are interested in gettnig one. I will definitely sell it in the store I work for, but if significant number of people are interested I can perhaps do something about it. So let me know by sending me an email! What "M.bian" means? Tell you later...

IOTA Notepads and ACME Pen (29th October 05)


Sometimes I'm bored by the plain black Moleskine notebooks. I wish there are notebook covers made specially for M so that I can change the style once in a while. Well, I'm gonna do this myself if Modo&Modo don't come up with something in their next new products :) For now, I settled for IOTA's (http://www.everyiota.com) great design pattern notepads for quick disposable notes in the office and remain loyal to M for portable notebook. IOTA launced 9 new design patterns in NY Stationery Show and I finally have the notepads and wrapping paper come to our store and I just LOVE the designs. I hope they keep up the good work and give us more surprises. On the other hand, a lot of my pens really lose their appeal once you use them for a few weeks because their design makes no difference to others. The same boring factor made me purchased a Frank Lloyd Wright designed pen from ACME Studio (http://www.acmestudio.com), which launches new pen every few months. These pens get matching name card cases as well, so you may want to have several sets for different occassions. It is fun to come out of the black-only world once in a while and enjoy the fresh look and feel, afterall, fashion governs most of the product trends in our lives.

la Feltrinelli Special Edition Diary 2005-6 (28th October 05)


People have been reporting sightings of this little red book that can only be found in Italy. It is a special edition done for la Feltrinelli and finally I got it! Thanks to a kind lady over there who found a copy from her office and sent it over for me. I appreciate a lot Monica! The copy I got was #14981 obviously a limited special edition just for Feltrinelli. The red color is extraordinarily bright and on the cover there is the Feltrinelli logo embossed. It is a "Weekly Notebook 2005-6" different from the existing one, which the week view is on the left page and lined note on the right. So far I've seen special editions done for corporates such as Moet, Siena University (image here) but this is by far the most outstanding in terms of color and configuration. I have confirmation from Modo&Modo that this special format is going to be all over the world in 2006-7 (See format image).

Trendmapper on Moleskine (11th October 05)


Funny to watch in all search engines springing up with web sites and references of the word Moleskine suddenly in these months. The Trendmapper creator doesn't however guarantee that these results are accurate. Makes me wonder what happened for all those spikes.

The world is so small and things pop up once in a while in my life connecting so many people thanks to the Internet. Talking about social network in the 21st century. Positive energy now covers the entire Internet world much much more than just rant and raves that I experienced 10 years ago in BBS. Links and links and synchronicity and community .... I met Janey on Flickr and weeks later today I saw a wire sculpture, just so happen Janey posted her latest drawing and I posted a comment on her blog asking if she know something about wire sculpture and she replied to let me discover Alexander Calder. On the other hand, during my business trip in Taiwan in March 05 I found from Taiwan Flickr Group that they were going to have a casual committee meeting in the next 20 minutes, I jumped right to the venue not knowing what would happen and met these great people 2 hours away from my flight back to Hong Kong. One of them was Judy and I introduced them my Moleskine drawings. 3 months later Judy came out with a nicely drawn Moleskine Japanese Album and she exhibited in our Taiwan store. Today I found from her blog that there are some Hong Kong people connecting to her months ago. The world is so small. Judysmile Experimental Blog.


Newton versus Moleskine (3rd October 05)


The only PDA that gave me a hope to use a 'pen' doodling freely was Newton. No other device came close to its great features. I owned OMP, MP130 and MP2000 and was the system operator for Hong Kong Newton User Group. It was great fun creating such user group and enjoying the technology that allowed me to check/send email in Japan's phone booth, send/receive faxes on the fly, go on the net checkout newsgroup, arrange appointment and to-dos....etc. Newton has everything I wanted for a PDA, but it was discontinued when Steve came back to Apple. I'm certain some day there will be a new Newton, but for now I'm back to the basics using just Moleskine. Interesting to find that even the most advanced technology a few years ago was still bigger than the size of M. Well, there is no need to compare functionality head to head, they are just two different things, but they are both certainly on top of my productivity tool list, ever.

Composite Girl (3rd October 05)


Let's just call her Composite Girl temporarily. My imaginary friend who comes from another dimension. To be honest she is created out of my experience with people I love and admire. She likes to travel through wormholes, anything that has holes on it becomes her vehicle of transportation. Most of the time she travel through pieces of breads to my world. She has certain duality that makes me admire her. One of her eyes is dreamy and genuine, the other mechanical and deeply perceiving. Wings set her apart from worldly gravitation. Composition makes her highly adaptive to worlds she travels to. Creative to the point she always leave behind a whirlwind of things....

The Bulky Way (13th September 05)


I found that trying little things on M always lead to some kind of iteration thus new way to use M. I was opening up a new mind.deposit.4 and I had dozens of magazine clippings for shops I wanted to visit in Tokyo. At first I was using a clear folder to hold all of the clippings in A4 papers, but my experience told me that holding such big a file is difficult to write anything down and take picture (in stealth mode) at the same time. So this time I cut and paste every shop info on the front part of my mind.deposit.4 and it became so bulky I started to wonder if I did the right thing.


Well, the first thing I discovered was that I could use the elastic band in a whole new way by wrapping it across the bottom right corner AND then the bottom left corner of the M. It holds everything securely inside and it also allows some larger clippings to be protrubed from the top side of M. Then I found that M's back pocket was so full of name cards I collected it became super bulky to add any more. So I found some very nice large size money or paper clip from a book store called Maruzen. It was so useful I could actually add more and more things on the front cover and organize them later on. Using two such clips also helps to increase grib and allows me to insert new stuffs from various angle pretty fast and secure.


The whole system remains pretty portable and everything in one piece instead of falling all over. Of course adding a pen holder and a Parker pen that has a time zone reference increases the 'travel journal' feel a lot but that's just for the show. Finally, I was very happy with this trip having visited a lot of nice shops, dinning with a lot of fun and laughter, enjoyed reading everything on my M when I was on the plane back home, sipping cab so and drew something on my M and fell asleep.

Japan Market Research (13th September 05)


Market research in Japan with Monica from 7th to 9th Sep after visiting Tokyo Gift Show. She thinks this particular Moleskine looks much more cool on her, so here's a shot for you. Now you don't have any reason to forget where we've been, although I'm still the owner of this particular mind.deposit.4.

New Moleskine Product: Watercolor Friendly Sketchbook! (23rd August 05)


Source says that Moleskine will soon have a new member to the family (or actually a replacement of the existing Sketchbook?). As Russell Stutler pointed out in his Moleskine Sketchbook pages, most of us can't really use the existing sketchbook for watercoloring as regular watercolor beads up on the pages. So Modo e Modo is going to release a new sketchbook that is watercolor friendly, according to source. Now retailers are pretty much having a full two shelves of Moleskines products including Van Gogh, Cahier, previous Volant and the classic M, adding one more that's really useful wouldn't be that awful to end users however.

Elements (22nd August 2005)


I drew this last week just because I wanted to draw something. All the elements here are either random or associated I don't know. I can only describe through tags and keywords what's happening here: books, life, tree, water, flow, sameness, burning bush, clitoris, fire within, growth.

Moleskine Sites in Japan (22nd August 2005)


There are currently two distributors in Japan for Moleskine. You will find two totally different web sites, each doing their own very special promotions. Moleskine.jp (created by a retail shop) features "We Love Moleskine" showing testimonials from designers and worked with a magazine to create a special travel series called "PORTER X PAPER SKY". On the other hand Moleskine.co.jp (created by Qahwa handling book stores distribution as one of the two distributors. Another distribuor Ginza Yoshida handles stationery stores) works with designers from all over the world to create "My Moleskine" exhibitions. Their first exhibition will be held from October 2005 in 5 locations:
  • Aoyama Book Centre (Aoyama)
  • LIBRO
  • Nadiff
  • Tower Record (Shibuya)
  • Tsutaya Tokyo Roppongi Hills
MoleskineArt.com will have the privilege to work with them to cross link and bring the exhibition to Hong Kong and Taiwan in 2006!

Reporter Display and Prototype (22nd August 05)


About a month ago, all the Reporter stocks arrived our stores and we had a difficulty displaying them. Since the side of Reporter is not black, the cover when looked from sideway really couldn't stand out like the plain old M. We tried a few times but this is the best way to display Reporter for the moment. BTW, I noticed something different from the sample I got from vendor before the stock arrived. It has the word "PROTOTYPE" printed on the back side of the cover! Now I got a special edition, a collector's piece.

2006 Diary or Planner? (22nd August 05)


Kikkerland recently posted the 2006 diary on their web site and something weird here, is it called "Planner" or "Diary"? From the samples I got from vendor, they have the sample cover as last year's. I guess Kikkerland just used a mock up temporarily. (Left: Kikkerland's Moleskine Diary web site. Right: Samples I got from vendor). Upon checking the details, the weekly diary changed back to the old design which works a lot better, and the spelling mistake of "lenght" is corrected.

More Moleskine Encounters in Japan (24th July 05)

There are so many envying Moleskine's success, we've seen some vendor copying certain aspects of the great quality and created mimics. This time I met a vendor in Japan trying to launch a new series of notebooks in October, the quality is not bad, despite the fact that the idea of such configuration is not that original. I can't wait to see the final product and do some comparison work. Will keep everybody posted about this.


When I was doing market research in Tokyo - Jiugaoka, I found in a shop called Cibone a special edition of Moleskine made by designer Takayama. Actually it is not that special except that he printed either Rose or Lips in gold deboss on the cover. However, I do appreciate a lot in Japan, for their culture of customization is far more advanced than all other Asian countries.

Finally, I was fiddling with my new Amadana Calculator wondering how to use the unit conversion function. Double checking things, I checked Moleskine Diary 2005's unit conversion section and found a slight error. The word "length" was printed "lenght".

Tokyo Fun And Inspiring Time (24th July 05)

After a 3 days Osaka business trip, I had a freezing vacation in Hokkaido (Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Hakodate, Toya, Noboribetsu) for 6 days, then headed back to Tokyo for business again, meeting Okuyama san, Monica and her sister Maejie. It was the first time I tried to use M horizontally, after Elmond's recommendation. I just love to use it this way. Vertical does look more natural but horizontal is more practical.
Picture 1: In the tokyo gift show VIP area, we saw a guy's hair style so unique either it looks very traditional Korean or he put on the wrong fig, I couldn't describe it, so I drew it and we even laughed and peeked more than we should.
Picture 2: Later we went to Hamamatucho for another show, when we had lunch together in an old Japanese Soba shop, I met this kind of toilet again and wondered which direction everybody would face. You know sometimes you discover you are the weird one only after 10 years of private practice for things like this. Well, a sample of three doesn't say anything, so I asked 6 persons including myself. Turned out Monica was the weird one, obviously with certain reasons. She claims this is the clean way to face :)
Picture 3: I sometimes try to draw a person from my mind, without looking at the person or the paper. It is a good training for a sketcher, but a great fun when you deal with ordinary people, like Monica, Maejie and me. We tried to draw each other, with or without looking at the person but definitely not looking at what we draw. Turned out I'm a person with a mouth that looks like two sausages sticked together, Monica always has a square face while Maejie's eyebrows are always pointing upward. In this drawing where you see Monica drew me, you see she actually can see things like a new born baby: facial features are dislocated and disoriented.
Picture 4: The final draw-without-look was a master piece, joinly done by the sisters, producing a cubist's style so unique I dare not lose my Moleskine. On the flight back home with Monica, we read an article featuring the Moomin story, the daughter of Moomin's creator Trove Jansson (whom now own the license) had some very simple but inspiring message to say, both Monica and I had some thought about it: "I understand sharing with others makes us feel less lonely, and also understand the importance to embrace others, even though people have different personalities and opinions. Accept others, give others some rooms, then everybody can live freely."



Long Flight Drawing (24th July 05)

I had quite a few trips after the May NY visit, including Taiwan and Japan (Osaka, Hokkaido, Tokyo). Other than a nice half bottle of red, putting down thoughts on M is actually quite a good idea. Both drawings were done in the last NY trip. I took NorthWest and believe it or not, 18 hours of flight without TV/Movie in front of your seat. So naturally, I had to read a lot of magazine and soon all of them were consumed. During the reading, I periodically put down thoughts associated with the articles, then I switched to a sleepy/drowsy mode after a few half bottle, drawing mixed things and ideas and memories without planning. I amused myself very well.



proj:exhibition Taiwan Launch Photo (26th June 05)

I went there to setup on 21st night and these pictures are taken the day after. It couldn't stay until the press event on 25th so I'm anxiously waiting for Taiwan colleagues to send me photos. proj:exhibition Taiwan Special Event! (20th June 05)

I'm very happy to announce that proj:exhibition is going to Taiwan! The exhibition will start from 22nd June and last for one month, first in city'super's store entrance then move to the gallery area after about a week's time. This time in addition to the artworks we got from the last Hong Kong exhibition, we have 3 more submissions from Hong Kong and 2 from Taiwan. Further, there will be a special event on 25th June 2005, 2pm in city'super where the following 3 great illustrators will come and show them how they use Moleskine and share their illustration experience with you:

New York Stationery Show and M in the States (15th June 05)

The New York Stationery Show started from 15th to 18th May this year. It was the first time for me to go there as I missed it last year. It was not as huge as Frankfurt's PaperWorld but vendors are a lot easier to work with. I found a lot of nice items especially greeting cards. Of course I wouldn't miss Kikkerland's presentation since Armand reported that they had a great time in NAMTA.


Kikkerland was certainly very very busy as during my 3-4 times pass by their booth, I couldn't squeeze into it and when I did, there were always people asking questions about Moleskine. I must say it was their main attraction. Perhaps due to limiation of the booth size, Kikkerland couldn't present all the Moleskine products in a single profile of shelves. Instead they had 3 shelves facing different directions. Not surprisingly I found Armand's button! I met Laura Kellner and quickly introduced myself, she immediately asked me to take as many buttons as I wish and threw a dozen into my bag. Thanks a lot Armand! Too bad I couldn't meet Jeroen and Kikkerland was super busy, so I dashed off to other places but came back to peak a few more times :)

Happy with Armand's buttons, I went outside the Javits Centre and took a few pictures and decorated my boblbee with the Sketch book button. In the next few days I went to Barnes and Nobles, Borders, Kate's Paperie, Shakespeare & Co., AI Friedman, Blick, Pearl Paint, etc. Most of them don't carry a full collection of Moleskine's products and many of them had an out of stock situation for ruled, blank or sketch books.


Long Trip and Aftermath (15th June 05)

These pictures pretty much summarized what happened before my long trip to NY, Hartford and Boston. Not so long as to unable to update anything here, just that the aftermath was just too much to handle. Before I update what happened in NY Stationery show and what I saw about Moleskine there, here's what was new. I finished mind.deposit2 (as seen here with a test I did to put a heavy duty adhesive paper cut in heart shape) and started mind.deposit3 by writing something I discovered from my son's growth and trying to summarize what I have to carry for every trip I go.


I cut from a red adhesive paper this heart shape and put on the back of mind.deposit2 to see how durable it is. In addition I used Sakura's aqualip ball sign to write a little message on the heart. I looked great. However the aqualip quickly failed to stick on the paper upon a few days' use.
Starting from mind.deposit3 I found that my son started to realise when he wiggles his toe, he can actually see it move. A milestone matching "doing it" and "seeing it done". It was his big discovery and I wonder if there are still many such milestones I can achieve in my life. Perhaps seeing him grow is already one big milestone I should treasure.
Shu Long also went through the trouble to get fever from the girl sitting next to him in a clinic while we were waiting for a vaccine shot.
Now as my business trip is getting more and more often, visiting shows, vendors and market research, I often missed bringing something essential such as firewire cable to ensure I have enough battery on my ipod for long flight entertainment and listening to audiobooks. Finally I had to build a checklist just for myself, tremendously useful.


I'm so orz.... (30th April 05)



I learned about this emoticon only recently, it captured the essence of my recent agony about meeting deadline by thinking and clicking nearly 1 mouse click per second within 7 hours. Anyway, it is a great emoticon and there are web sites entired devoted to it. Check out the Wikipedia version of its meaning.

When Will It Be Larger Than A Pocket Size Moleskine? (21st April 05)


On his 3 months old day, I took some water color and painted his right foot, made this impression on the pocket size Moleskine. When will his feet be larger than a pocket size Moleskine? It will be interesting to do a comparison. Any guess from experienced fathers? Anyway, the original is a bit scarry, coz I used a light red paint which resulted in a bloody foot print. So this is digitatlly twisted to have a more pleasing look, besides Blue is spiritual to me.

Moleskine Icons for MacOSX and 9 (15th April 05)


I'm happy to announce the availability of these icons for your Mac. They are great to sit on your desktop in their largest sizes. When you drag a file and hover it, the Moleskine notebook opens up. The color of the notebook matches the opened book during the hovering. There are more designs coming up, including opened notebooks of dozens of designs. HOWEVER, I don't know how to compress the icons files for you to download, coz I don't have dropstuff to make sit files. Any suggestions on how to do that?
Baby Diarrhea, ProjEx MindMap, Ideas and Target (12th April 05)


  • Baby Diarrhea: Baby Shu Long is now 3 months old, suddenly he had diarrhea probably due to bateria infection. So doc prescribed him Smecta to coat his bowl and Protexin to give me extra 7 helpful bateria. Luckily his diarrhea doesn't seem to affect his mood, just needs more sleep. He is now very sensitive to camera, mimicking my mouth movement, makes up his own words and stretching his feets strongly when excited.
  • ProjEx Mindmap: I was planning proj:ex by mindmapping, like what I do on most other projects. Ideas flew like water when I use mindmapping techniques, the writing was sloppy however. So for the record I usually drew a final mindmap for later use.
  • Ideas: Ideas come when you are not looking hard for them. I just wanted to remind myself that the most productive and creative time I experienced was when my mind was relaxed.
  • Target: Realizing the target next financial year jumping up so much, I have to be even more relaxed.


Fake Pilot G2 Pen (11th April 05)


I thought it was some sort of clearance when I bought this HKD $3 fake Pilot G2 pen from a "warehouse" in Causeway Bay. The standard retail price is HKD $11. $3 is even half of what retailers get from wholeseller or distributor. You won't even notice the subtle differences if you are not holding a real one side by side. Here's a quick comparison.
  • Picture 1: The speed of drying for real Pilot G2 is about 4 seconds. The fake one takes far longer, after 4 seconds I still get the same smear length similar to 1 second. The color of real G2 is very black while fake one is brownish. Another big difference is that the real G2 can't be erased at all, the lines appear exactly the same before I erased 20 strokes. On the other hand, the fake G2 appeared half dark only after 4 eraser strokes.
  • Picture 2: The printing of the fake G2 (bottom) is a lot more corse and bigger than the real one.
  • Picture 3: The refill of the fake G2 (bottom) has no cap at the end of the tube. The gel that stops ink gel from evaporation appears much darker orange than the real one. The diameter of the fake one is less than the real one. The printing on the refill is very rough comparing to the real one. Basically the refill is completely different from the real one.
  • Picture 4: The grip of the fake G2 (bottom) is shinier and thinner than the real one, and is easily removed from the barrel. The clicker of the fake G2 is removable, not like the real one.
Finally, the pirates even printed the same barcode and model number on the sticker. It is an impressive deception unless you are trained to observe the manufacturing quality differences of sticker/barcode/plastic/ink etc. Shame! Wasted me $3 instead of saving $8.

We didn't expect such a great respond from customers, but the result is fascinating. In a week's time the comment book (large size blank Moleskine) was filled up entirely, so I have put a Comment Book 2 in Times Square last night, hoping to capture more comments. I found that there are a lot of people leaving messages to their loved ones, friends and schoolmates also. So do drop by because the exhibition is extended until 15th April!

Mind Deposit (24th March 05)

Sam sitting beside me pulled from the bottom of his drawer this dymo thermo tape printer. Suddenly this old tool becomes so useful I started to label things, including my Moleskine. I used to have problem pulling out the right Moleskine as I carry pocket size 2005 diary and blank notebook all the time. Now the problem is solved with this simple and beautiful tool. The color of the tape even resemble the color of the Moleskine pages. I call my blank notebook "mind.deposit" as it is a constant tool for me to deposit thoughts and feelings on it, including pictures, drawings, notes etc.

MoleskineArt.com Proj:exhibition Launched! (16th March 05)


THANK YOU EVERYBODY! I'd love to announce that the proj:ex is launched on 15th March until 31st March. So far after one day there are 7 comments with drawings on the comment book! It took me a long time to organize this small scale exhibition and it is very rewarding already. The company allows me to have this space, sketchers submit their works, Visaul Merchandising team specially made the furniture, vendor gave me M. diaries as gift of appreciation, etc. I know I'll be organising more...


Well, space is limited and there are more than 14 submissions from Canada, France, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Spain, Samoa, United States. All I could do was to be selective and show the best. You will see here drawings are cramped in small space. Each participant has their little profile (including tools they used and preference of M. sizes) shown beside their drawings. There is a large size Moleskine comment book sitting on the table and I wrote an introduction to what this exhibition is.


I took picture of the groups of drawings each participants sent, these are just some examples: Rober W. Fisher did the most amazing drawings on M. He even sent me some giclee prints of his drawings. Dream, who travel often to Taiwan and love the culture, used a M. Japanese Album to record her journey. Kwan, who is an artisit in HK tortured M. into something pleasant when displayed. Mike Rohde, who drew specifically for this exhibition and said hello in his M to HK people, I wish I could show more of his work there. The project is not finished yet, I am sending PR releases to newspapers/magazines, sending the gift to participants with a nicely made thank you letter, composing proj:exhibition gallery online and all the exhibits will be transferred to Taiwan in May. In the mean time, I am planning to organize seminar hosted by design school professors to talk about sketching. Finally, I want to let everybody know that holding a copy of Moleskine drew by somebody on the other side of the planet, appreciating the work he/she had done, having them genuinely wanting to express their works to the world, is the most touching experience that can be conveyed through this little notebook, truely "Every Moleskine Has A Story To Tell". I'll let you all Moleskiners know when the online gallery is finished!


New Moleskine Insert (15th March 05)


I've just realized that the newly arrived Moleskines have a new insert. Modo & Modo added two more languages (Japanese and another I don't recognise) and added color coding of the notebooks to the index page. Resulting a 4-fold, 8 pages insert as supposed to a previous 3-fold one.


Acrylic Moleskine - Paperweight - Synchronicity - Creativity (11th March 05)


When creativity flows, events follows with strong synchronicity, this is the story.

I was planning/mindmapping proj:ex on Moleskine, I wanted the exhibition to have something special coz the fixture they made is totally not what I expected (shhhhh...it). A month ago I went to Japan and saw a design shop called Cibone using thick acrylic blocks to display product info. I murmured about it to Monica our merchandiser, turned out she had a friend in acrylic advertising business and I could get some free blocks from him if I give him a spec. I gave her two sizes of square blocks. My proj:ex mindmap was in front of me when I was talking to her, I thought why not make some acrylic Moleskine Diary, add an elastic band and have fun since it was free? So I gave her a M daily diary under my reach and a week later the Acrylic Moleskine blocks came! I thought it was something fun to do for the exhibition but Monica said "I thought you wanted them for practical use, as paperweights for displaying Moleskine". Geee, what a great idea! Just when I needed them!

You see these things connect strangely you never knew which came first and why they happen at the moment you needed them. They click.

Visconti's Van Gogh Crystal Fountain Pen (10th March 05)


I did a lot of calligraphy during junior high, bought some books and pens, played around with ink etc. Gradually this little hobby of mine got lost and replaced by more and more computer usage. Moleskine got me back into writing, calligraphy and fountain pen. The urge of owning an admirable fountain pen just keep surging until one day I found a pen museum store doing 40% off. My heart was fixed on Aurora's demonstrator for a long time since I knew the brand, but it is way too expensive for me and its kind of a collector pen. To my surprise I found this Visconti Van Gogh Crystal celluloid and immediately fell in love with it. Size is smaller unlike other converter type fountain pen, it fits my pocket well and smaller than a pocket size M. For a HKD $1150 I felt no pain at all because the pleasure of owning one, picking up old hobby and starting once again a flow of writing pleasure. It uses cartridge due to its size, I might use a syringe to pump Noodler's ink to the cartridge after finishing the first one, as suggested by a fellow Moleskiner.

Milk Boy (5th March 05)


Amazing realization of how fast things change on Shu Long. Two days ago I saw him sucking milk from mom, his little cheek pumping vigorously and cute, so I started out drawing his egg shape head, added two fatty cheek muscle and the rest of the drawing just flowed naturally. Doing this helped me reflect upon his bodily changes including lengthened eye lashes, color change of his scrotum, more accurate and controlled eyes, hands, thumbs, feets movement. It doesn't stop on physical, I can see him building up a unique set of action/reaction, stimulate/response pairs against the outside world. The sound he makes also amazes us tremendously. The built-in mechanism of this little boy gave him a good start, the sets of inter-dependent stimuli/respond, such as mom's dripping nipple in respond to baby's cry, made me into thinking how invisible or non-physical connection between them is building up after umbilical separation. Nature gave Shu Long a good start and good environment, how and when is "idea" going to exist in this little being? He is a great learning tool for me.

Proj: Exhibition Final Submission Deadline On 8th March 05 (1st Mar 05)


My greatest thanks to VMD colleagues who went into the extend to create special fixture for our Proj: Exhibition. Too bad all the drawings has to be in glass cases due to high traffic of the store. As you can see, the size is large enough to host more drawings and some of the art works will be show on the two hanging acrylic board from ceiling.
STILL A CHANCE TO SUBMIT: The final final deadline is 8th March 2005 for Proj: Exhibition ONE. I went for some business trips in Feb and delayed the exhibition date until mid-March. So please, if you are interested to show your work on Moleskine, which I will also put on an online exhibition, please contact me immediately to arrange properly, we have to scan high resolution images and print them out so it takes time.

Pleasant Texture Pleasant Mix (28th Feb 05)


I finally got in touch with the Moleskine "Touch" series during my last trip to Tokyo. I couldn't see any Touch series in Frankfurt but quite many stores in Tokyo is still carrying limited number of these "Limited Editions". Naturally I bought a few and I think I will miss the point of a notebook by not using them, at lease not using them roughly like my daily torture of the normal ones. One of the most amazed store I visited is a fountain pen heaven called Shosaikan , it is a "Pen Boutique" located in Aoyama area in Tokyo. They have vast collection of antique fountain pens arranged like a museum, a small cafe where you can enjoy reading books about pens, magazine and postcard corner and a gallery where you can buy all the nice fountain pen and accessories. They offered excellent service and the environment is so calm you take your time appreciate their collection. It is where I got these limited edition Moleskine and a cup of coffee.

I also love another innovative company called BOBLBEE , originally a Sweden backpack design firm but a group of Japanese created this great concept store in Jiugaoka area in Tokyo being most enthusiastic about their creation. I bought at least 6 of their products for the love of ergonomic design and coolness. I particularly like the texture of these products and found a great match for MOLESKINE CROC with BOBLBEE AMPHIB, MOLESKINE FELT with BOBLBEE X3. On the other hand, Amphib is water proof although not intended for submerging into water, I can fit my 12" Powerbook into it although the backpack opening is a little too small for this. It is so far the lightest, smallest and most functional BOBLBEE I've ever had.

Japanese Album Home Decoration (9th Feb 05)


I moved to this new home the day my son was born on 11th Jan 2005 (imagine everything happening in the same week!) and everything was messy until I started to unpack stuffs bit by bit, using little time slots from which I stayed in Hong Kong out of a few business trips overseas. I didn't want a television set to be the main "attraction" of our living room, so I kept my 15" TV at the corner, stacked up books I like (not so attractive at this stage, BTW if you want to use books to decorate your home, be sure to check out "Living With Books") and the BEST part I like is putting Moleskine Japanese Album Pocket size on top showing all the pictures I like. Other Japanese albums such as those offered by KOLO have great quality but with limited number of pages. The Moleskine Japanese Album holds nearly 40 pictures on one side, enough to show my little archive of pictures: From falling in love to marriage to baby born and grandparents holding grandson. I'm sure I will use it for later stories in my life. Note: don't expect to close the album if you put more than 30 pictures on it.

Frankfurt Trip Notes 2005 (9th Feb 05)


A pocket size blank Moleskine notebook is always a good companion to me. I sticked some of my newborn baby's photos on it to show to colleagues and people I had good discussion in PaperWorld. I used a special notation on it to record my free thinking, observations and follow-up notes. The pocket also helped me to store receipts for claiming travel expenses, train tickets, extra few backup name cards, hotel address card in German in case taxi driver don't understand my German. Finally, a few sketches to record my journey, with things I picked up at random, notes of certain new-to-me events. I just love to read the entire Moleskine again to capture what happened in those 2 months' period of companion. I always love to use Blank Pocket size.

First Cahiers Customization from Germany (9th Feb 05)


Sonja from Germany seem to be the first to customize or did something on the new Cahiers series notebook. A computer science student herself but love to be creative as often as she can. Update On Reporter Series (2nd Feb 05)

Since the Frankfurt news was published, a lot enquired about the availability and the form factor of Reporter, so here's something I found out from Modo & Modo:

  • There is no bookmark in Reporter
  • There is still pocket and is vertical at the end of the Reporter notebook as usual
  • Availability in USA: from mid to late February
  • Some asked if Borders or Barnes & Noble will carry Reporter or Cahiers, it depends when they will purchase from USA distributor, who is now exhibiting these new lines in the NY Gift Fair


Frankfurt Trip To Discover Volant, Reporter and Meeting Modo&Modo! (2nd Feb 05)


My trip to Frankfurt's Paperworld exhibition this year was very rewarding. Not only did I reconfirm the relationship with vendors I met last year but I found some more that I'd like to order from. But the most rewarding is to understand the Moleskine happenings in Europe by going to different stationery/design stores and meeting Modo&Modo. My first day in Frankfurt was market research going to large and small stationery stores and department stores such as Galerie Kaufhof, Karstadt, Papier Kraemer, Hugendubel, Cri-cri etc. All of these stores carries Moleskine and display them in considerable size proving the popularity of the brand even in Europe. To my surprise I found that most stores still carry the discontinued Volant series at Euro 4,90 or less. For a person never touched a Volant before I did purchased a set of 3 shrink wrapped in one piece. Some stores already carry the replacement series called Cahiers but not all.

In this year's Paperworld, Moleskine's full line of product is displayed in the German distributor Authentics' booth. In addition to the new Cahiers series, I was finally able to meet the rumoured Reporter series, which contains Pocket/Large sizes of Blank/Ruled/Squared notebooks in vertical reporter formats! It means the elastic band is now at the bottom of your palm when you open the Reporter by flipping the pages upward. It is a lot more natural to hold and write with Pocket Reporter than the original pocket sized notebooks because you can support the entire writing platform with your palm in Reporters but in normal Moleskine, you have to hold the pages using your thumb on top, other fingers at the bottom while creating no stable plaform for writing. It is considered a wise move for increased usability.

Finally, I had the pleasure to meet with Modo & Modo's top executives (Mr. Fabio Rosciglione, one of the persons who had the idea of re-producing the Moleskine notebooks and currently looking after worldwide sales business, and Monica Buzzi who has been very kind to our requests) and learned more about their move and got their support to my proj: exhibition. I found that they do keep track of what's happening in the world of Moleskine fans very very closely. They even printed many of our web pages including Moleskinerie and Amazon's site which contains a book called "How We Are Hungry" which has a printing looking very similar to Moleskine. When asked if they are creating too much SKU, they said every of their decision has certain reasons for example and Cahiers line was produced to replace Volant series because of their research findings that a lot of people including Picaso like to use notebooks that has thin spines so that they can lie on surface flat very easily, it is cheaper and it is not for archive purpose, it is for everyday use. Besides, there is a paper pocket at the end of the pages which Volant has none. On the other hand, the new Reporter series was produced because they received so many requests from people that a more handy version is better for fast and stable note taking. Modo & Modo doesn't want to produce too many items so Cahiers and Reporters will be the only new models this year. Further, they are in active consideration of how to link up a world-wide league of people who use Moleskine through re-constructing their web site, although they still have no idea of how to do it in the first place.

2 Lives, Dozens of Faces, One Soul (1st Feb 05)


Despite my son is not a Gemini he is going to encounter duality from his life anyhow. One day, as an experienced Gemini I wrote something down for his reference for living in the world of multiple universe connected by synchronicity. He is now growing more in touch with the world and testing responses, I'm anxious to meet the soul I attracted to this world, when will he presents himself to me? It is extremely important to transfer values before senses are clouded by stimuli. Train of thoughts started when I thought "hmmm once in a while I love to endulge myself into a virtual world, be it thought experiments or virtual games like MYST. What would I do if I were a father of myself? How and where would I get the capability to guide him without helping himself to create his own value system from formative years?"

Milk Magazine Coverage (18th Jan 05)


When you flip through Milk magazine it covers a lot of trendy stuffs and you can see that they have good coverage on design/illustration and have certain space dedicated to give artists/designers to show off their stuffs. Last week I talked to editor Gary and reporter Cat, whom are both into photography and illustrations. Recommending Journal Logging - My New Born Son (13th Jan 05)


I had two dreams about him before he was born. One was about my wife pulling him out from womb still with u cord attached, played around for a while and stuffed him back inside. The other was the night before he was born when we noticed a slight bleeding (first sign of labour, they call it "the show") but not yet having cramps to go to the hospital, we waited until the morning. What I dreamed was him slipped out of the womb while u cord was still attached, weird thing was, the u cord was a USB cord, no my son is not a USB device that can cry when he is hungry. In this dream I cut the u cord carefully, the "cable" ending was like melted plastic. Both dreams gave me a lot of insight about the state of mind I was in. Finally, he is here in this world. My Moleskine was recording the entire timeline since the first bleeding, I recommend potential fathers to do the same as it is very important for you to sit down and THINK, jotting notes helps you quiet down and focus. Besides, one should record every possible medical terms one encounters, including what kind of pain killer the nurses used and when the drugs were administered. On the final page of my son's Birth Log, I recorded his body measurement on day one, as seen above. I'm so happy for the entire experience. Welcome to this world!

Duality Is One (8th Jan 05)


From western dualism to oriental Yin Yan, it all falls into oneness when you find that there is no escape but to gracefully embrace agony and challenge, to cherish joy and stability. Focusing only on certain extremity results in hyper-sensation that translates into bodily pain, mental discomfort and immense feeling of not being in control. When one is in that state, there is no tomorrow as tomorrow is vastly unknown and unpredictable rendering days longer than 24 hours, stares become hostility, voices louder than the ear can bear and piercing through your brain from within and without.

About the drawing: the background is about me as a new buyer trying hard to meet sales for my department, which generated a lot of unbalanced forces in my psyche. Sales trend as blue water that flows uncontrollable vs Red burning desire to manage work, from inking flames to burned page. Sales as a worldly illusion vs the tree of life, being set on fire by my indulgence to smoke for an escape. Red burning flames over cast on my deep thinking self you see the immobility vs desire. I wish I could manage to think that these all fall into one big pale blue sky. Realizing that the sky is so clear and these are just incidents that is passing by in our conscious stream of thoughts, I found peace and a better sense of control.


Mike Is Up To Coffee Again (7th Jan 05)

Tsunami (4th Jan 05)


On Sunday, December 26, 2004 a massive 9.0 earthquake, centered in the Indian Ocean about 100 miles off the coast of Aceh, Indonesia, formed a tsunami that pummeled 11 countries causing thousands of deaths. The pain and agony I cannot imagine, the sudden lost of 155,000 unique souls created a big void in our collective consciousness.

Play Child (28th Dec 04)


60,000 unique souls now hovering in the region, some wander in fear looking for reasons, some lost their worldly senses became catatonic. May these souls be calmed and rest in peace. On physical level, Gaia lost that many lives and there must be some feedback mechanism to act from another direction in order to get itself into equalibrium by self regulating, what is it? Will my child play an important part in it?

Red Cross Launches Appeal For Victims of Earthquake And Tsunamis in S.E. Asia (27th Dec 04)


"Basic needs for victims of the disaster are shelter, tents, blankets, clean water, food and family utensils and mosquito nets. An important part of the operation will also be tracing lost relatives," notes Simon Missiri, head of the Federation's Asia Pacific Department in Geneva. Yet another experiment with Japanese Album - The All Seeing Eye Overlooking Hong Kong. Radiating from the all seeing eye are strains of foliage and floral scent encouraging innovative abstracts and green out of concretes. I'm not with the Illuminati however.

Moleskine Soft Skin - Cahiers (21st Dec 04)


The samples of the new Cahiers line arrived my office this morning. All of them are sold in set of 3 pcs. Colors: Black, Kraft. Size: Pocket, Large, XL. Config: Ruled, Plain, Square. Material: Paper. The binding is done by stitches, the pocket is replaced by simply adding extra piece of paper. There is no elastic band. I thought the soft skin is made of materials other than paper, but the quality is not so bad either.

Dave Appears In Smoke, Warning of Health (19th Dec 04)


Hevy workload + unknown ventures + reliance on substances. I was drawing freely and just went with the flow of ideas, this health theme came up consistently. For unknown reason the name DAVE appeared in my mind for the entity that came out of the chim. Synchronicity drew me to the next step writing it down after 2 consequetive appearance of "DAVE" in tv commercial in 5 minutes. Obviously he wanted to be known as DAVE.

Japanese Album Fun (19th Dec 04)


Yesterday I experimented with the new Japanese Album. Printed some digital photos in A6 size, cut them up a bit and stick on the album. It looks super great when you pull the contents out and display zig zag style on porch or desktop. On the other hand I drew something on it (as shown), I found that ink looks a little pale on album paper than on notebook.

Mike's Latest Sketchtoon for proj: exhibition (19th Dec 04)


Approaching the deadline to mail the sketchbook to Hong Kong, Mike is experimenting on drawing techniques as well as building up contents. At first it was inanimated objects and scene description, then he drew people and gave them names, now we see a breakthrough to not to be afraid of space. Up to this moment, I believe Mike's sketches tells the story of his learning through experiment. Good work Mike!

Taiwan Store Opened (19th Dec 04)

It's been a hectic week trying to cramp every merchandise into a new store in Taipei. Now I'm gonna look after stocks for 5 stores in HK and Taiwan. The fun part is that I now have increased some new sourcing and have one more store to play with. Some Taiwan artists are now being contacted, although according to them, Moleskine is not well known there, they are quite interested in joining proj: exhibition to be held over there. Hopefully, Taiwan store will hold the 2nd exhibition if I can gather more Taiwan local works. Heavy work pressure, but got something fun to play with, happy.

Organic Lifestyle (7th Dec 04)

Sitting in a cafe holding a piece of POP from Food Division, contemplating the difference between organic farming/lifestyle and commercialization of organic life forms. It seems trivial to find a difference as people get so used to the symbolization of "health" in terms of organic food. What we are buying is not the food itself but the believe that we are healthier each day instead of just getting older. That strong consumer motivation drives the concentration of efforts/nutrients to produce what's called "organic" products, which somewhat deviated from the grand illusion of the definition: "The principal guidelines for organic production are to use materials and practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural systems and that integrate the parts of the farming system into an ecological whole." Balance means everything has its time, farming commercially means speeding up certain life form in certain direction/dimension by concentrating supply/nutrient and drainage of other resources before their time. I mean if the end result of organic farming is commercialization, it would hardly be a practice that enhances ecological balance and integrates life forces. (Reference: The Organic Explainer). Why I'm thinking all these? Coz I'm thinking how to cultivate my soon to be born son, organically or commercially? What it means to grow a child organically? and commercially? .....


Pilot New G2 And Illusion Pen Be Out Jan 2005 (27th Nov 04)

I just met Pilot today and they presented some new products to be launched in Jan 2005. A lot of Moleskine lovers use Pilot G2 pen, there are 3 colors (Red, Blue, Red) currently, but a new Dark Blue is coming out soon. On the other hand, a smaller sized Pilot G2 is also going to be launched. The smaller version seems a very good companion with pocket size Moleskine. Finally, they will launch a new 7 color pen series called Illusion. The amazing thing about this is when you write with these pens, the ink are all black on paper, but if you use any eraser to rub on them, which generate heat, the ink will turn into colors. Even more amazingly, if you put the paper into fridge, all the ink turn black once again. Well, I was amazed by the magic but still haven't been able to think of some creative use of them, so let me know if you have any idea!


Holiday Stickers For Moleskine Diaries (25th Nov 04)

Since Moleskine diary has no Hong Kong holiday indication, I bought a sticker which has HK, China and US holidays I can peel off and stick on particular dates of my Moleskine. It is a very nice idea and useful for me, even better than the dates that indicated for other countries coz mine is showing in Red! On the other hand, I wonder why Modo & Modo doesn't produce diaries that cross the years, say from August 2004 to January 2005. I guess it would increase sales significantly. They might be able to get some switcher earlier.

Paper Reflections (25th Nov 04)

To me post-it are notes to other people, notebooks are notes to myself. But sometimes a little obsession with a twist can mean something very special to yourself or others. Say, on weekly basis collect as much sticky notes as possible, probably those you wrote, stick them on one Moleskine page, revisit the page 3 months later and see what you wrote and how much you can recognize what you were saying to your colleagues. Sooner or later you will think that you have brain damage and need to write even more sticky notes, but when you get to this far, you know you should stop and see a doc. On the other hand, putting your thoughts and feelings on Moleskine for somebody else is also equally challenging and dangerous, coz most of the time you either fall in love of what you wrote you want to keep it to yourself or you have too much time to review and laugh at yourself for the stupidity of your self-centered "thoughts and feeling about you". Finally you wonder whether you are writing to youself too much or you are actually talking to yourself thinking you are writing to somebody.... errr after a month's time, the page is still empty. Nevertheless in both cases, they are great reflection tools for me and lot of insight came from self-awareness through peeking at myself in a different time frame.


Moleskine Daily/Weekly Diary And Sketch Book Appears (24th Nov 04)

Finally the new Moleskine 2005 diaries are arriving city'super store today. The daily version is actually too thick for me, I had a struggle to choose between pocket or large weekly versions. Well, finally I decided to use pocket size weekly due to its portability and work. On the other hand, it wouldn't be a bad idea to use daily version to write/draw something as reflections. Also this is the first time we have sketch book here, pocket size is available in small quantity, while large size is yet to arrive Hong Kong.



Notebooks Are Portals To Ages (23rd Nov 04)

I wish I could've done this on Moleskine. I was deeply immersed in the Myst saga (Myst, Riven, Exile) and painstakingly taking notes and drawings during the game play. It was done on a small sketchbook too bad not a Moleskine, if you give me those games today, I can easily follow my notes and play it all over again pretty easily. Richard Downs, my favorite artist also did the drawings inside two of these games. In the saga, you can travel to different worlds (Ages) through books and the characters wrote all of their journals and designs in these books as well. All these are strangely related in mysterious ways Carl Jung calls it Synchronicity. The game journal I wrote, the drawings from me and Richard Downs, the Age jumping books, Moleskine, etc, all these connections only I would know and a deeper meaning is always embedded in these chains of events. I am that type of person ready to immerse myself into something I appreciate, so deep sometimes I have difficulty coming back (see the CCFS sickness I got back a few years ago). Notebooks are portals to ages, ages that transcend the time/space continuum where souls meet through medium of various forms without necessity to recognize shapes/forms.


MatchMan Comes Into Life (22nd Nov 04)

Matches on paper versus Matches ON paper. Finally, Matchman comes into life. He told me of his very own manifesto and I have the pleasure to start recording some of his wisdoms on M. I'm inviting him to do more, but at this stage he seems jumping around boxes after boxes busily. I'm sure he has more to offer, so if I can catch him, I'll let you know. BTW, before his last jump, he said something about Nausea and Jean-Paul Sartre and asked me to learn from him. After hearing that I started to have a very unpleasant feeling towards something hidden, which I'm supposed to reveal. What's that? That very same feeling happened when I had an unfortunate incident with CCFS (Color Classic Fixation Syndrome). Weird. Note the jornal I kept years ago here.


Putting The Matchsticks into boxes (20th Nov 04)

I wish we all had the persistence to follow it through. That is to put those matches in their right boxes and review constantly according to the Notes On Matchbox II. Stephen Covey developed this matrix for priority to illustrate one of the habits of highly effective people. For people like me, I need visualization to practice it correctly, so matches are natural metaphor for me coz I really want to burn all the to-dos, burn them burn them all, effectively. Anyway, to summarize, Matchbox II is a long term focus for improvement which pursue opportunities instead of solving imminent problems. Well, MatchMan and PhiloMan did said something worth exploring more... (see this drawing)


Each To-Do Is a Pieces Of Matchstick (19th Nov 04)

There's been so many insights everyday and there is no better way than to jot them down on Moleskine instead of leaving the precious "wisdoms" on office A4 papers waiting to be lost. You too have tons of To-Do adding to the already piling up Yet-To-Do list right? Here's my view, each To-Do is just like a piece of matchstick, you want to burn them all, but you can't. What's the more wise option? Store them in different match boxes and label them .... well, you have to turn the page which I haven't drawn, so stay tuned.


Lisa Laughy's Latest Drawing (18th Nov 04)

Here's a latest drawing from Lisa's gallery. Titled Collage Sketchbook "Orans: Magnetic Pull" (Paper items, colored pencil, watercolor pencil and markers). This is her test to use watercolor pencil on M. "I have just completed this collage in my sketchbook notebook (See details). I was curious to see how the heavyweight pages hold up to watercolor pencils and am happy with the results."

Russell's Moleskine Sketch Kit (16th Nov 04)

Russell from Japan sketches all the time. While he has a lot of talents as an "American Christian artist in Japan", as seen from his personal page, he has a habbit to carry a sketchbook and try to sketch during lunch or travel in the subway. Press Release from Working Unit (13th Nov 04)

Working Unit is sending out this press release in Chinese. From my observation, the current people buying Moleskine notebooks are 80% expatriates/foreigners, 15% educated/designer, 5% casual yet classy people. Let's see if this will change across time while Working Unit promote Moleskine in HK. I certainly want M. to be a special object that is not too widely used by everybody, like Apple computer. Anyway, we'll see.


More On Postcard And Stickers in New Moleskine (12th Nov 04)

Previously I only saw 9 stamps on some small size notebook, but today I found the 9 postcards that came with the small size notebook. I'm yet to see the 9 labels anywhere, and wonder if the same format is happening to the large size notebook. Anyhow, it seems that Modo & Modo would like to have the fans collect these stamps, postcards and labels to push sales. Also learned from the store that the Moleskine diaries are coming to HK soon.


Your Beloved Pen on Moleskine (11th Nov 04)

What is your best loved writing instrument on Moleskine? I personally like to use Pentel's Tradio Stylo pen in black. The water based pen has a fibre head, which allows you to draw/write lines with different thickness by turning the angle, sort of like a calligraphic pen. Best of all, I have a practice to add shadows after drawing, which can be done by using a wet brush or tissue paper and smudge the edges to create the effect. What is your favorite pen on Moleskine? The brand new series of Moleskine notebooks are now packed with a sheet of stickers appears to come in random, each notebook may come with a different set of stickers with quotes from people like Picasso. On the back of the stickers it says:

I'm wondering if they will be able to print Chinese characters of quotes from famous Chinese writers. It will be very meaningful as Chinese invented paper around 140 and 87 BC, while the oldest paper with writing on it, also from China, is dated to 110 AD.
