Paintings Chicago Ignored

To John Wellborn Root

John Wellborn Root did not live to see the completion of four of his masterworks - the Great Northern Hotel, the Ashland Block, the Woman's Temple and the Masonic Temple. He is buried in Chicago's Graceland Cemetery. We believe that accounts for the name of these paintings.

Pannier may have slashed the second canvas to represent sadness over the early death of an architect at the height of his career and the demolition of so much of Root's life work.
