Paintings Chicago Ignored

To John Wellborn Root

This painting was dedicated to the Ashland Block built by the architects Burnham and Root (1891-1892.) Root died at the age of 41 before its completion. The sixteen story structure was demolished in 1949.

For each building destroyed that was designed by Root, Pannier created two virtually identical paintings. One canvas remained intact.

The other canvas was slashed and mutilated by the artist. The vandalized canvas spoke to the demolition of many significant works of Chicago architecture, as well as Pannier's resulting disillusionment.
