Math: Facing An American Phobia by Marilyn Burns
Marilyn Burns is one of my heroines. This book is
the best one out there about math anxiety/phobia and, in particular, about how
to NOT pass it on to our children. The book is easy to read and humorous and is
a great example of Marilyn Burns' always intelligent and caring
style.

Math Power: How to Help Your Child Love Math, Even If You Don't by Patricia
Kenschaft
This is my most highly recommended book about
mathematics education. It is out of print, but well worth tracking down.
Patricia Kenschaft is a university professor and a mother of two grown
daughters, one of whom was homeschooled for a short time. This book is directed
to parents and is extremely empowering because it is filled with practical
advice and logical explanations. There are chapters about math education as
well as chapters specifically about how to help your child learn. Read about
"How Drill and Kill Cripples U.S. Math Education" and "What Every Parent Should
Know About Testing and Grading." This book will raise your confidence in your
ability to help your child learn math in natural and meaningful
ways.

Introducing Mathematics by Ziauddin Sardar and Jerry Ravetz.
This book takes a historical approach and introduces
the story of mathematics from ancient to modern times. It is an entertaining
book - artistic and quirky.
