Sunday morning the group gathered in a sunny glade for a talk on Dormice. It explained that little was known about these charismatic creatures until quite recently. These days there are nest box schemes and other monitoring techniques used to build a picture of their range.
Undisturbed scrub is vital for there well being and also provides an ideal habitat for other woodland creatures. A key technique for determining the mix of small mammals in a woodland is analysing the teeth marks left on opened hazel nut shells.
After being shown some winter and summer dormice nests the course was over. Everyone agreed it had been a well worthwhile and fascinating three sessions.
