Un editoriale di Fareed Zakaria che meriterebbe di essere tradotto

Un editoriale di Fareed Zakaria - uno dei bersagli preferiti degli intellettuali neocon che hanno, con un po' di calcolo politico, individuato le radici paradossalmente conservatrici del suo pensiero - che meriterebbe di essere tradotto.

"There is a tension in the Islamic world between the desire for democracy and a respect for liberty. (It is a tension that once raged in the West and still exists in pockets today.) This is most apparent in the ongoing fury over the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a small Danish newspaper. The cartoons were offensive and needlessly provocative. Had the paper published racist caricatures of other peoples or religions, it would also have been roundly condemned and perhaps boycotted. But the cartoonist and editors would not have feared for their lives. It is the violence of the response in some parts of the Muslim world that suggests a rejection of the ideas of tolerance and freedom of expression that are at the heart of modern Western societies."

IMHO, Zakaria suggerisce che il processo di democratizzazione di una società sia molto più lungo e complesso di quello che molti - soprattutto tra gli intellettuali neocon - sono portati a credere. Che comporti la scrittura di regole condivise e capaci di tutelare le minoranze (anche quelle religiose). E tanto lavoro in quello che una volta si chiamava "sociale". Anche perché i movimenti radicali - e fondamentalmente illiberali - si sono attrezzati per il gioco democratico. Salvo poi tradirne lo spirito con parole. E soprattutto atti.

Come se ne esce? Forse un po' di realismo temperato da tanto ottimismo della volontà. Per esempio la reazione di condanna delle varie forze politiche libanesi - compresi gli Hezbollah - alle devastazioni di domenica e le successive dimissioni del ministro degli Interni fanno ben sperare. Anche se l'attribuire come al solito tutto il male alla Siria è decisamente autoassolutorio.
