ROW-3 logistics page: please return here often for updated travel and lodging recommendations (today is 18 March 03).

General Notes:

Venice Proper (map) is a relatively small city and the meeting location at ISMAR is accessible from anywhere in 15-30 minutes by foot or by a combination of foot and vaporetto (water bus). The most heavily touristed areas are around Piazza San Marco and the Rialto Bridge. Other areas are much quieter.

There is excellent train service into the city. The station is near where the causeway enters the city at Piazzale Roma. Hence, lodging in a nearby city, such as Mestre or Padova, is also an option.

Finding CNR/ISMAR:

The best way to find CNR/ISMAR is to first find your way to the well-marked Rialto Bridge and proceed by foot. (If you are on the vaporetto, watch for the Rialto Bridge and then continue one stop further to "San Silvestro" to avoid carrying luggage over the bridge.)  Look here for detailed directions to the Institute, including a map and a photograph of the front gate.

Getting to Venice:

Flights into Venice Marco Polo airport (VCE or vce) are frequent from major cities around Europe, including hubs in London and Frankfurt.  From the airport, there are frequent buses to Piazzale Roma in Venice from which you can walk or take a vaporetto to your hotel.  It is also possible to take a water taxi from the airport directly to your hotel (much more expensive) or a larger water bus (alilaguna), which costs 10 euro from the airport to S. Marco.

Trains into the Venice S. Lucia station arrive in Venice proper one canal over from Piazzale Roma.  Some long distance trains pass through Venice/Mestre only from which you must change to a train that transits the causeway to the S. Lucia station.

Information about Venice and Venice logistics is plentiful online, including the Lonely Planet guide or the official tourism site.

Lodging Recommendations:

There are many housing options in and around Venice. Hotels fill up quickly, however, so make reservations as soon as possible.  Below are some specific recommendations.

UPDATE: mid April is high season in Venice and the hotel prices are high (many over 200 Euro/night).  The Accademia was full and the Domus Ciliota had only a few single rooms as of 20 February; the daBruno confirmed space available as of 24 February (180 Euro/night for a double room with breakfast).
