The computer revolution is here in the sciences and engineering. No discipline will remain the same. Computer open up too many new ways of knowing and doing. Computer offer too much power for control and analysis. Small general purpose computers have becom an importatnt part of this revolution. They give the scientist and engineer a way to have computer power und there direct control; they are personal approchable tools.

Throughout history, man has sougtht ways to make a better life for himself. Integral to this pursuit has been attem to expand his ability to manipulate data and make expansive calculatations. However , his ability to create machines that help in this effort has been limited to the past few years.

Bis zu der Zeit als die o.g. Bücher gedruckt wurden waren die jenigen die bis dahin jemals einen Computer gesehen hatten oder gar direkt mit diesen Maschinen etwas zu tun hatten zahlenmäßig sehr beschränkt. Zu dieser Zeit gab es sogenannte "Rechenzentren", in denen diese Großcomputer standen und von Personen in weißen Kitteln bedient wurden. Ich beginne mit diesem Zeitraum, da es in etwa der Zeit entspricht, in der ich mit diesen Systemen zum erstenmal in Berührung kam. Aber Computer oder deren Vorgänger gab es schon viel früher.
