There are two types of handicapping games. The first is fundamental handicapping where the handicapper organizes his data to derive an actual predicted final score. The second type is trend based handicapping.
Trend based handicapping looks at the past records of the two teams playing and how they have done against the point spread and the Over/Under number. The basic premise of trend based handicapping is that the people who establish the point spread have difficulty posting an accurate spread or Over/Under number for certain teams under specific circumstances.
We are often asked, "How does a game played five or six years ago have any bearing on the outcome of a game played today?" The answer is, IT HAS NONE. What it does show is how well have the people making the line have done establishing that line.
One of the stronger endorsements of trend handicapping takes place each year when the New England Patriots visit the New York Jets. The Patriots have covered every time they have visited the Jets for the past ten games. Do you think the odds makers have a bit of trouble posting an accurate line on that game?
