Notes on the 1900 Census
  • The above census data was found by Dave Jordan.
  • An attempt has been made to reproduce all data exactly as it is on the original record; some wording changes have been made for clarity and further information on the meaning of column headings is on the census sheet.
  • Both Dwelling Number and Family Number are artificial numbers used by the census enumerator.
  • If wish to explore any of this data further, please contact Dave directly.
  • Faronica is probably the German form of Veronica.
  • Although the spelling of Veronica Nicolai is not exactly as expected many times the census takers would use a phonetic form. Or perhaps this was an early spelling.
  • The evidence that this is the Veronica Nicolai of interests includes: 1) that there is a son named Martin Nicolai that the family knew, 2) that the street address and neighborhood is familiar (see note below and also address section), and 3) the presence of the Abends in the same household (see note below).
  • It appears that the Abends lived at the same address, 5041 Justine, but were most likely on a different floor.
  • In a review of the addresses in the Address Section of these pages, it can be seen that the Pastwas lived at 5041 Justine as late as 1898 and that Mike Pajewski (brother of Veronica) lived down the street at 5027 Justine as late as 1893.
  • Probably Matthew Abend in the Census above is the brother of Augustine Abend who married Frank Pajewski, Veronica's half brother.
  • There is a discrepancy in the year of birth of Phelix G. and the year of marriage of his parents and also the years they came over. It does appear that he came over with his mother in 1890 though.
  • "Packing S. Yds" probably stands for Packing, Stock Yards.
  • The Ruinkaretz family also lived at 5041 Justine, but probably on a different floor than the Nicolais or the Abends. It is not clear whether they were related to the Nicolais, Abends, Pastwas or Pajewskis. One intriguing possibility is that John Ruinkaretz is Veronica Niclolei's brother and Michael, Frank, and John Pajewski's half brother. The evidence is thin, but Grandma Jordan thought that Veronica's maiden name was not Pajewski but something like Rode. If Veronica had a maiden name other than Pajewski and she was a half sister, then she had the same mother as Michael, Frank and John Pajewski but a different father. While Rode and Ruinkarentz are certainly not the same name, it is possible late in life she didn't have it quite right. Until this is sorted out, it was thought useful to identify this new name should it appear again in further research. Complicating this hypothesis is that Michael Pajewski was born before John Ruinkaretz.

  • All ages agree with the 1900 Census except for Elizabeth who then was claimed as 14 and born in October 1885.
  • For the 1900 Census, Martin and Veronica claimed to have arrived in 1882 while in the 1910 Census they claimed they arrived in 1884. Probably the earlier information is correct.
