- This record was found by the Leonhardt family as part of their legacy of records and pictures about their Knowles and Black ancestors.
- It it presumed that T. Black is our Thomas Black who was married to Margaret Leddy, although it is possible it was their son Thomas born in 1857.
- Part of the problem is the date, which is believed to be 1875, but it looks like there is a crossout. Our Thomas Black would be about 53 years old in 1875 which seems a bit old, but this regiment was a volunteer home militia so it is possible. The son, Thomas would only be 18 and probably too young to have risen to a Sergeant.

- The Battalion was raised January 31, 1862 at Montreal, Quebec as the 6th battalion Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada. It was redesignated the Sixth Battalion Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada or (Hochelaga Light Infantry) on June 5, 1865, the 6th Battalion Hochelaga Fusiliers on December 1875 and finally as the 6th Battalion Fusiliers January 28, 1876. Thus the Hochelaga Light Infantry existed as a name only from June 5, 1865 to December 1875. Since in the certificate above the month August is very clear and the last digit of the year is "5", then the certificate would only be correct for either August 1865 or August 1875.
- Canada does have records for the Hochelaga Light Infantry, but in 1989 they were not on microfilm and not indexed.
