How to Say Scholdberg

by Dave Jordan

Monica Jönsson, a fellow family genealogy researcher provided the following explanation of how to pronounce Scholdberg, actually Schöldberg

SCHÖLDBERG Pronunciation

  1. The first sound "SCH" is pronounced with the Swedish sj-sound, which is nearly impossible for all non-native speakers to pronounce.
  2. The closest you get in English is the sh-sound, like in she.
  3. The vowel "Ö"sounds like "ea" in early or "u" in nurse.
  4. "LDB" has the same pronunciation as in English.
  5. "E" is pronounced like "a" in bad or trap.
  6. "R" - no problem, and
  7. "G" is like "j" - in yet. The stress is on the first vowel.
  8. Good luck, wish I could hear you!

I tried to construct an American English spelling and came up with "Shuldbarj."
