Because our Knut Oscar Schöldberg married and settled in England from his native Sweden it has been difficult to establish where in Sweden he was born. Below are two renditions of the data. One a strict genealogy based only on firm data working backwards. The second by jumping to a family in Sweden that seems to match what we know.

  1. Below are two extracts from Family Search for Sweden which may be the link to our Carl Johan Scholdberg and Knut Oscar Scholdberg.
  2. The extracts from the Vital Records Index for Jämshög, Sweden appears very promising as the name for Knut Oscar is a perfect match, the year of birth matches, as does the father's name. Most likely this is the correct family; however, I plan to work back the ship records to see if I can find another connection with Jamshog before officially declaring this the correct link to our Knut Oscar and Carl Johan Scholdberg.

  4. Information from Maj-Britt Sundin on 27 October 2007: "Knut Oscar Schöldberg, which is an unusual Swedish name, went to sea in 1852 and was never heard of again. His father had died recently, in 1852 September 17 in Jämshög, but his mother and one sibling, his sister Johanna Schöldberg, were still living in Jämshög parish in a village called Holje nr 20. His four other siblings were dead."
  5. Information from Maj-Britt Sundin in 30 January 2008: "Her parents were a tanner called Bengt Sšderberg born around 1760 and his wife Helena Maria Tilosius born November 23, 1765 in the city of Karlskrona in Blekinge (Karlkrona Amiralitetsfšrsamling is the name of the parish). They both died September 9, 1808 when they drowned when the ship they were on sank in hard weather outside of Kristianopel when they were on their way to …land (an island upwards from Kristianopel). Charlotte had 6 siblings."
  6. Information from Maj-Britt Sundin in 6 August 2008: Provided a several hundred word document in Swedish that appears to be a traveling record of Carl Johan Schöldberg from his birth in 14 May 1802 until just before his marriage. There appear to be many interesting dates and places but the document needs to be translated.

Extract 1: Jamshog, Blekinge, Sweden

Birth Records from the Vital Records Index for the town of Jamshog, Blekinge, Sweden; Batch C402324, Film 86202; Jamshog has now been incorporated into Olofstrom. It is located in southeastern Sweden about 10 miles inland.

Extract 2: Orebro, Sweden

From an IGI (International Genealogy Index) marriage record, Fiche 44578, there is another C.J. Scholdberg of Sweden with a date of birth in the expected timeframe. It is not clear if this is our Carl Johan Scholdberg but the dates of birth are about right and could lead to a son named Knut Oscar Scholdberg born about 1837 in Sweden. Orebro is about 100 miles west of Stockholm. However, the case is much stronger for Extract 1.
