Notes on the 1841 Census
  • The above census data was found in a May 2006 search by Diane Cuseil.
  • An attempt has been made to reproduce all data exactly as it is on the original record; some wording changes have been made for clarity and further information on the meaning of column headings is on the census sheet.
  • The data is from HO 107/702/412/ Folio 13/page 21
  • It is possible that this John Isaac Steward and Sarah Steward are the parents of my Joseph John Steward. We know very little about the parents of Joseph John Steward at this time and what we have was obtained from Joseph John Steward's Marriage Registration marriage registration. However, the little we have matches well with this census record. The marriage record shows that Joseph John Steward's father was John Isaac Steward and that his occupation of shipwright, a perfect occupation match. In addition other data we have indicate that Joseph John Steward was born between 1824 and1826 thus matching the age of 15 for the 1841 census. Finally, though it might be co-incidence, a sister's name of Elizabeth might matches with Joseph and Elizabeth Stewards first child, Elizabeth, though it is more likely she was named after her mother Elizabeth Holloway.
  • A big thanks to Diane Cusiel for sending me this information and opening up new possibilities.

Notes on the 1851 Census
  • The above census data was found in a May 2006 search by Diane Cuseil.
  • An attempt has been made to reproduce all data exactly as it is on the original record; some wording changes have been made for clarity and further information on the meaning of column headings is on the census sheet.
  • The data is from HO 107/1556/ Folio 632/page 25
  • In the index to the 1851 Census for Poplar there was no good match to the 1841 John and Sarah Steward. However, this Stewart family has a very good match, except that the daughter Elizabeth is missing.
  • A check of Free BMD for any deaths for John, Sarah, and Elizabeth Stewards in Poplar yielded the following results:
    • Sarah Steward June quarter 1851, the only Sarah Steward death in Poplar from 1841 to 1910.
    • John Steward March quarter 1865
    • Elizabeth Steward December quarter 1864
  • Thus it is possible that our Sarah Steward died in 1851, but then John, son John, and Elizabeth are unaccounted for. Of course it is possible that they moved from Poplar, but son Joseph John Steward and family resided in Poplar during the 1851 Census. It would be good to know how old the Sarah Steward was when she died in 1851.
