Notes on the 1900 Census
  • The above census data was found by Dave Jordan.
  • An attempt has been made to reproduce all data exactly as it is on the original record; some wording changes have been made for clarity and further information on the meaning of column headings is on the census sheet.
  • Both Dwelling Number and Family Number are artificial numbers used by the census enumerator.
  • If wish to explore any of this data further, please contact Dave directly.
  • There are a variety of spellings of Gainowski. The version above, Geinosky, is probably phonetic.
  • The 1540 W. Bronson address is the same as 1540 W. 49th Place and was a long time address of the Gainowskis from at least 1893 to at least 1909. It had been hoped to find John and Anna Pajewski at this address for the 1900 Census as they lived at this address before and after the year 1900.
  • The data implies that the Gainowskis came between October and December 1886. Their daughter Anna who married John Pajewski would have been with them also.
  • The Soenke family appears to have been part of the group of families that came over together. These include the Pajewski's, the Gainowski's, the Abend's, and the Pastwa's. A Jacob and Anna Soenke tombstone inscription is on the back of the Martin and Rosalie Abend tombstone at St. Mary's. One of the Abend children married Frank Pajewski. Most likely the Soenke's lived on a different floor at the same address.
  • In 2002, Sandra Evans a decendant of the Soenke family indicated that the Soenke's came from Marienburg, which is now Malbork, N. Poland. Malbork is about 30 miles southeast of Danzig. Finally in 2005 I was able to confirm that the Gainowski's were from small towns (Gnojau and Muntau) a few miles to the west of Marienburg, so it all ties together.
