Notes on the 1900 Census
  • The above census data was found in a Fall 1976 search by Dave Jordan. The record was located through the use of the Soundex system.
  • An attempt has been made to reproduce all data exactly as it is on the original record; some wording changes have been made for clarity and further information on the meaning of column headings is on the census sheet.
  • Both Dwelling Number and Family Number are artificial numbers used by the census enumerator.
  • If wish to explore any of this data further, please contact Dave directly.
  • There are numerous discrepancies in this record. For example, Vaclav was born September 10, 1863 not in August as indicated in the census. Katherine was born October 20, 1862 not January 1864 which makes her 37 not 36 as shown. In addition, John was born December 1882 not December 1883 and he would be 17 not 16. Mary was born December 1889 not December 1890 and she would be 10 not 9. James was born August 1892 not August 1894 and he would be 7 not 5. The data for actual birth dates of the children were obtained from their baptismal records which are presumed to be correct. Some of these discrepancies are corrected in the 1910 Census. For the Sokoliks, we believe John was born February 4, 1876 not October 1873 and we believe Theodore was born January 10, 1879 in Bohemia and not June 1878.
  • John is shown as being born in Illinois which agrees with his Baptismal Records, but of interest is that he is shown as immigrating in 1889.

Notes on the 1910 Census
  • The above census data was found in a 1988 search by Dave Jordan. The record was located through the use of the Soundex/Miracode system.
  • Touch here to view a scan of the Filipek 1910 Census.
  • Most unusual is the middle initial for John Filipek. Most likely it is an error. On other documents he is shown as John Vaclav Filipek (Baptismal Record) or was known as John James Filipek.
  • There are a number of age differences, marriage year differences and year of immigration differences between the 1910 Census and the 1900 Census. These are compared in the table below.

Notes on the 1920 Census
  • The above census data was found in a October, 2000 search by Terry Nelson.
  • If wish to explore any of this data further, please contact Terry directly.
  • Touch here to view a scan of the Filipek 1920 Census.
  • Of interest is that the Filipeks moved back to 3001 Emerald after being away from about 1914 to at least 1917. See the address listing section of the Filipek Pages.
  • They continued to own their own home, but unlike the 1910 census, it was no longer mortgaged. It is believed they sold the grocery store in 1921. John is shown as owner and as head of the household. It is unclear if he was the actual owner or if it was Katherine or both.
  • Katherine answered "Unknown" for her year of naturalization; however it was April 2, 1900 and she obtained it through her husband.
  • Analysis of the ages and years of immigration are below.
  • Also below is an the census entry for a boarder also living at 3001 S. Emerald. He was a butcher which suggests that he worked at the grocery and that they sold meat at the store. This helps verify Grace Filipek's recollection that Vaclav was a butcher at the store. Pictures of the inner store made it seem as if there were only dry grocery goods, fruits and bread.
  • At about the time James died, sons John and James were launching off with their own place and working to establish careers in sales of men's furnishings and law respectively (see Address Listings). Perhaps Katherine didn't want to be alone at the store and joined them and by 1916 they all lived together again but about 5 miles south of the store. Since they didn't sell the store, one would guess that they hired others, such as the butcher to run the store. It's pretty clear that the boys had other interests than the grocery store as all of their occupation listings except one for John are in sales, clerical, insurance or law. Perhaps Katherine and John moved back in 1918 when James headed off to WWI and the Army of Occupation. James returned in August 1919 and in April 1920, shortly after this census, James married Grace.
  • It's curious that Mary Barrett, the grandaughter Katherine raised is not shown, nor is her father Larry. She would only have been about 4 years old.

    Second Family at 3001 Emerald

As follows is a second family residing at 3001 Emerald during the 1920 Census. There is no known relationship between the Filipeks and Louis Normata. It is likely he was a boarder and ran the old Filipek Grocery Store.

      Notes on the 1930 Census
      • The above census data was found in an April 2003 search by Dave Jordan.
      • Column heading wording is similar to but not exact heading wording. Further information on column heading wording can be found on 1930 census sheets.
      • An attempt has been made to reproduce all data exactly as it is on the original record.
      • Both Dwelling Number and Family Number are numbers used by the census enumerator in order of visitation.
      • If wish to explore any of this data further, please contact Dave directly.
      • After Katherine's daughter Mary died in 1916, Katherine helped raise her grandaughter, Mary Barrett. Larry Barret also boarded in Katherine's home.
      • The value of her home at $10,000 was relatively high for those days.
      • Katherine states her age as 65. As she was born in October, the year equates to 1864. Using October 1864 as a base, she states that she was 19 when she was married. This would be sometime between October 1883 and October 1884. Some data indicates she was married in January 1884 thus this data is about in the correct range. Actual data thought shows she was born October 20, 1862.

Comments on Year of Birth Analysis
      • It appears Katherine may have adjusted her year of birth to be younger than her husband. This may have been a common practice of the times as it has been found in other records of this era where an older wife claims to be younger and sometimes the husband claims to be older. By 1920, Katherine has settled in on being two years younger than she was using a year of birth of 1864 instead of 1862. It is possible by then that she either didn't remember or had used 1864 so ofter she just continued to use it. Her 1914 and 1929 passport also use a year of birth of 1864.
      • It is unclear why the ages for the children Mary and James are off by one and two years respectively for the 1900 Census since they are so young. One would think their ages would be well known. The data for Mary and James is correct in the 1910 Census. However, the year of birth for John Filipek is one year later in both cases. Finally for the 1920 Census both John and James ages are correct.

Katherine's 1929 Passport Application states that she was married on January 29, 1884. The location is not stated
It is likely that this is the correct month and day and probably the correct year.
Katherine Filipek's 1929 Passport Application indicates her marriage date was January 29, 1884, which is in the range indicated by the 1900 Census and the 1930 Census. The 1910 Census appears to be an attempt to show a marriage before John's birth, which is not correct as his baptismal record indicates otherwise. No Marriage record has yet been found. The overall search range is December 1882 to October 1884.

Comments on Filipek Marriage Year Analysis
      • The best information to date suggests the James (Vaclav) Filipek and Katerina Nemec were born January 29, 1884. To date the location and the marriage records have not been found.
      • A careful search was done in January 2002 of the microfilmed St. John Nepomucene marriage records and while all the Filipek children's baptismal records were found, the marriage was not.
      • An on-line search of the Illinois Marriage Records has been done and no match was found. This search should be repeated as data is added to the database.
      • One hypothesis is that Katerina and baby John returned to Bohemia and they were married in January 1884 in their home province.
      • Another hypothesis is that they were married in another state, such as Minnesota where various Filipek relatives resided such as James' two sister and brother.

James' 1911 Passport Application states that he emmigrated on or about May 1, 1889 from Hamburg.

Katherine's 1914 Passport Application indicates that James emigrated on or about May 15, 1889 from Bremen.

Family history suggests James came to Chicago the year after Katherine did. This would be 1883. Marriage data indicates they were married on January 29, 1884, location unknown. It is known, however, that he was in Agronomics School in Bohemia in September 1884. His passport application indicates he came to stay in May 1889. Thus it appears he came for a short while in 1883 and then returned possibly with Katerina and son John until 1889.

Katherine's 1914 Passport Application indicates that she has lived uninterruptedly in the USA since 1889 implying that she came in 1889 with her husband.

Katherine's 1929 Passport Application indicates that she emigrated on or about May 1889.

Katherine arrived in 1882 and gave birth to her son John in December 1882. It is possible she returned to Bohemia and immigrated again in 1889 as indicated in the 1900 Census. Both her 1914 and 1929 Passport Application indicate she arrived in 1889.

John was born in Chicago in December 1882, but he could have immigrated in 1889 with parents if Katherine returned to Bohemia. John's 1929 Passport Application could be instructive in determining if he was continuously in the USA.

Comments on Filipek Marriage Year Analysis
      • What is known and verified is that John Filipek was born in Chicago on December 13, 1882. Thus Katherine arrived sometime during the summer of 1882.
      • It is also known that James was in Agronomics School in Bohemia in September 1884.
      • One hypothesis suggests that James came to Chicago in 1883 and that Katherine and he were married somewhere in the USA in January 1884. They both returned to Bohemia and then immigrated with their son John in 1889. If they both returned to Bohemia then the marriage could also have taken place in Bohemia.
      • An second hypothesis is that James never came to Chicago in 1883 and Katherine never went back and that James arrived by himself about May 1889.
      • John Filipek is shown as imigrating in 1889 in the 1900 Census but no immigration entry is made for the 1910, 1920 or 1930 Census. It is unclear how to interpret this inconsistency.
