Theodore Sokolik is thought to have been born 10 January 1879. The 1885 Census indicates the place of birth as Bohemia as does the 1900 Census. Theodore's Story though indicates he was born in New Prague, Minnesota.

Census Record
|
The Sokoliks were found in a June 10, 1880 Census record for LeSuer County, Minnesota. John was shown as age 4 and Theodore as age 1. The Sokoliks and Janas were living in the same dwelling for this Census. Katerina Jana (nee Filipek) was Anna Sokolik's (nee Filipek) younger sister by 5 years. It is thought that Jan Filipek, who was the first to immigrate in 1869 was also in Montgomery, but his 1880 Census record has not yet been found.

Census Record
|
The Sokoliks were found in a May 1, 1885 Census entry for Rush City, Chisago County, Minnesota. John was shown as age 9 and Theodore as age 6. The Janas were also listed in this census and they were the next house on the census takers list. This suggests that they probably moved together from Montgomery. Jan Filipek is shown as continuing in Montgomery for the 1885 Census.

Katerina Jana gave birth to a daughter on 6 July 1889 in Rush City, Minnesota. It is not known when she died but it was probably shortly afterwards. It is then thought that her husband brought the Sokolik boys to Chicago and left them with James and Katherine Filipek, put Elizabeth Jana in a Chicago Catholic Orphanage, and then took the other four Jana children to Pueblo.

Theodore's Story
|
The two Sokolik boys were probably taken in by James and Katherine Filipek around 1889 or 1890 just after James Filipek arrived. Addresses for the Sokoliks from 1890-1894 are therefore presumed to be the same as James and Katherine Filipek. Theodore said in his story that he started working in Chicago when he was 11. This would have been about 1890. He mentions he did all sorts of jobs including peddling newspapers on the corner of Adams and Clark Streets

There is no listing in the Chicago Directory for James Filipek in 1900. On February 10 James made his Declaration of Intent for naturalization. James was naturalized in Chicago on April 2, 1900 and used this address. The 1900 Census for the Filipeks was taken on June 7 at this address. The Census also shows John and Theodore Sokolik living at this address with the Filipeks. Most likely they returned in late 1899 or early 1900.
