Notes on Early Vaclav Filipek Locations
  • Vaclav was born and raised on Farm No. 16 in Kolence. He is thought to have attended an agronomics college. Agronomics is the application of the various soil and plant sciences to soil management and the raising of crops.
  • Vaclav brought his agronomics journal with him to the United States, probably as a keepsake. His son, John, saved it and John's grand-daughter, Terry, had it rebound. The journal is written in a beautiful script in Czech and hopefully will be translated over the years.
  • Valcav's immigration date into the USA continues to be confusing to us and ranges from 1882 to 1889. There is some evidence that he may have come over around 1882 or 1883 and then returned to Bohemia and then come again in 1889. We are continuing to try to sort this out.

Conjecture
In 1883 Albert Dedina lived at 187 24th Place and John Novak lived at 185 24th Place. John and Teresa Novak were the baptismal sponsors for John Filipek, son of James and Katerina Filipek. In 1892 James and Katherine Filipek lived at 187 24th Place for a few years. It is presumed that Katerina stayed with the Novaks and befriended the Dedinas when she came to Chicago. It is then presumed Katerina returned to Bohemia in 1883, possibly with James (Vaclav) Filipek.

  • Her immigration date into the USA continues to be confusing to us and ranges from 1882, the year her son was born in Illinois, to 1889. She may have come over in 1882 and then returned to Bohemia and then come again in 1889. We are continuing to try to sort this out.

Notes on James and Katherine Filipek Addresses
  • In America, Vaclav used the name James. James though may not be a direct translation. In these pages we have tried to use Vaclav when referring to events in Bohemia and James when referring to events in America.
  • In America, Katerina at various times used the name Katherine, Katheryn, Katy and Catherine. In these pages, we have chosen to use Katherine for consistency. It is also the name we believed she chose to use on a regular basis.
  • From the addresses above, James first shows in the Chicago Directories as a butcher in 1890. This was a year after his presumed immigration in 1889. Over the next four years, he is shown as a laborer. He then disappears from the Chicago Directories for the years 1895-1899. It is presumed that these are the years the family was in Colorado.
  • A search was made of the Pueblo Directories for 1894-1900 and while there are no Filipeks listed, there are a two for Theodore Sokolik who went with them.
  • The Filipek address for 1890 and 1891, 218 25th Place, is of considerable interest because it is identical to the address of Frank and Mary Nemec during the 1900 Census. Frank Nemec was Katherine's brother. See also Frank Nemec Address listing. We are researching whether Frank lived in this address as well for those 1890 and 1891 years.
  • The Filipek address for 1892 to 1894 at 187 24th Placer is also of interest because it is identical to that for Vojtech (Albert) Dedina. Marie Dedina was the baptismal sponsor for Mary Filipek in 1889 and Vojtech (Albert) was the baptismal sponsor for James A. Filipek in 1892. See Albert Dedina Address listing. We are now researching whether the Dedinas lived at this address as well for 1892 and 1894. Since Frank Nemec married in August 1891, it may have necessitated a move out of that household to a new one a block away.
  • Upon the Go to Chicago from Colorado in 1900, James started a grocery business at 2956 S. Emerald. It was called Filipek and Company and the 1901 entry above shows he was partners with John K. Sokolik.
  • By 1903, the Filipek Grocery, called "James Filipek's" was moved to 3001 Emerald where it remained for many years.
  • With the move to 3001 Emerald in 1903, it appears that John Sokolik focused his efforts in the sales of men's clothing at which he was very successful.
  • James died in 1914 and while the addresses below indicate Katherine and her son's moved away, their son James A. Filipek used the 3001 S. Emerald address on his marriage application. So at this time we are unsure whether they sold the grocery store in 1914 or kept it and just moved away and commuted to it. Further address research will continue.

Katherine's Passport Application is dated May 18, 1914 and uses this address. The Chicago Directory shows James A. Filipek (clerk) and John J. Filipek (salesman at 528 S. 5th av) at this address; there is no listing for Katherine. Quincy appears to be a few blocks south of Madison. This means it was not on the south side but about 5 miles west of the 3001 S. Emerald location and about 3 miles north. It was about a mile east of Riverside. It is not clear why they moved there or if they knew someone, but perhaps it helped them to know the Riverside area.

Notes on Katherine Filipek Addresses
  • After James died, Katherine and the boys moved away from the grocery store. During 1914 James and John lived together, but by 1915 or 1916 they were all together again including Mary Barrett's husband Larry. In 1920, James A. Filipek moved out when he got married.
  • We aren't really sure when, but sometime around 1925, Katherine, John and James along with Rose Skoblik, Theodore Sokolik and possibly John Sokolik all moved to Riverside. Riverside is about 8 miles west of the old grocery store. Riverside then and now is a quiet and beautiful place. Katherine continued to live in Riverside until her death in 1948.
