Notes on James and Grace Filipek Addresses
  • Of particular interest is James' address on his April 14, 1920 marriage application as 3001 S. Emerald. It had appeared that the family had moved about five miles further south. But at this time we are unsure whether they sold the grocery store in 1914 when James died or kept it and commuted to it. Further address research will continue.
  • We aren't really sure when, but sometime around 1925, Katherine, John and James along with Rose Skoblik, Theodore Sokolik and possibly John Sokolik all moved to Riverside. Riverside is about 8 miles west of the old grocery store. Riverside then and now is a quiet and beautiful place.
  • James paid $10,000 for the house in Riverside which for the 1920s was quite a sum. Apparently he had a very good job as an attorney during the 1920s. We believe that he worked as the attorney for a large auto repair firm in Riverside.
  • Unfortunately because of the depression he lost his job and could only pick up occasional work during the 30s
  • Some of his jobs during the 30s were as an attorney for trust companies refinancing mortgages and selling Maytag washing machines.
  • Because of not being able to make the payments on their home for over two years, James and Grace lost the house in Riverside about 1938.
  • They then moved back to Chicago in early 1939 with their two children.
  • Eventually Jim re-established himself on LaSalle Street with his own law firm, but I don't believe they ever owned their own home again.
  • Eventually James and Grace moved to 7047 S. Ada Street where Grace's sister, Alette lived upstairs. The home had been originally purchased by Adrianus Vanderkloot, Grace's and Alette's father. After Adrianus died in 1933, the ownership of the home may actually have belonged to all the children but Alette was unemployed and she thought it was her home so the Filipeks may have just paid rent and were happy to have a home and a relative nearby.
  • James died in his sleep in the back bedroom at Ada Street on December 6, 1961 after going back to sleep after being up and about that morning.

In the spring of 1965 Grace was still living at 7047 S. Ada and the house was up for sale. The first offers were coming in when it was found that the house was still in the name of Grace's parents and all the 6 children or their heirs would receive the proceeds. Grace worked with her husbands law partner, Charlie Kropik throughout 1965 and 1966 to sort it all out and act as the heirs representative.

Grace used to commute to the Chicago Loop on the train from her home at 105th and South Hale to work as a temp for Stivers. She joked about working with her friends sitting around a table doing envelope stuffing. In the old days she had been an executive secretary. I think she enjoyed having something to do and being with friends. She may have also worked from 1962 on also.

Recollection
Grace Filipek died March 7, 1979. Grace had a stroke which around 1968 to 1969 which impaired her ability to travel to the loop and to live alone. When Jeanne and Ed moved to Wheaton in 1969 she gave up her apartment and moved in with them. Dave was the lucky recipient of all her furniture.

Notes on Grace Filipek Addresses
  • After her husband died, Grace stayed for a short while at 7047 S. Ada. But without Jim around, the yard was hard to upkeep. I went over to mow the lawn occasionally but the elaborate flower gardens could not be kept up. The neighborhood was also becoming rougher. Grace with the help of my Mom and Dad moved to an apartment at 107th and Have which was within walking distance of a train to the Chicago Loop.
  • Grace worked for a while at Stivers, which provided temporary clerical personnel for companies. Unfortunately, about the mid-1960s she had a small stroke which affected her ability to navigate the train and to do the work, so she became housebound for a few years.
  • With my parents move to Wheaton in 1969, she moved in with them and occupied the first floor bedroom for her last ten years, providing helpful household assistance to my mom, and continuing to make delicious cinnamon rolls for the grandchildren.
  • If you wish to explore any of this information further or have other addresses from various records, please contact Dave.
