Definition of Heathenry
Heathenry is a modern faith inspired by the pre-Christian beliefs of the Germanic tribes, Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians.
No other statement can be said to encompass all Heathenry, but typically Heathenry includes some elements of the following:
- Worship of the Norse / Anglo-Saxon or Germanic gods and goddesses. The best known being Eostre, Frey, Freya, Frigg, Odin, and Thor.
- Honouring the spirits of the land (often called elves).
- Honouring the ancestors
- Honouring traditional heathen festivals which might include Eostre, May, Midsummer, Harvest, Ancestors Night and Yule.
- Ceremonies including the giving of gifts to the gods, elves or ancestors and the passing of a communal cup or drinking horn.
- A deep respect of personal honour.
Diversity is Our Wealth
Historic Heathenry was diverse. Different gods were honoured in different locations, different festivals celebrated and different religious rules observed. As a result there is no formal doctrine in modern Heathenry.
HFP respect the right of any heathen to find their own path in Heathenry and honour their deities in their own way. We do not tolerate individuals who attempt to force their personal interpretations on others.
Wider Tolerance
HFP seek to promote Heathenry and preserve its identity as equal to, but apart from, other pagan paths such as Wicca and Druidry. However we realise that many individuals will work with multiple pagan faiths and disciplines.
We are happy to work with pagans following multiple paths where they are in part influenced by Heathenry and respect their right to name themselves heathen if they so wish.
Moving Forward
The use of folk traditions from the heathen areas of Northern Europe is strongly encouraged as such additions help to link the ancient faith with modern day life.
