Movie Review: Prince Caspian

Darker than I remembered...

It's been a really long time since I read the books, but this movie seemed a lot darker than I remembered Lewis' writings. Of course, that could be the age difference, being able to look at it from an adult's perspective while maintaining the child-like innocence burning.

The scenery is beautiful in this movie. This is such a human-centered storyline, the fantasy characters seem to be natural in their secondary roles.

It was good to see all four of the original children back for more, even though it does mean the end of the line for the elder two... they don't appear in any of the other stories, that I can remember.

The bad guy is human. The good guy is human. The fantastic characters are there for muscle and shock value only... it is the bond between the humans, and their ability to do good, that saves the day. And it is also shown how frail and twisted we can become if left to our own devices.

The special effects were fantastic! Again, no ILM... New Zealand is doing an amazing job with their own SFX houses. The CGI characters were more real than the first movie, and interacted remarkably well with the live cast. "Yes. I'm a mouse." Cracks me up!

Cast and costumes come together very nicely. The entire film is beautiful! The one thing I would add... John Rhys Davies as the Professor. Every movie can do better with a little JRD. Or a full sized JRD... see my review of In the Name of the King.

So, the bottom line: I give it 9 fletchings out of 10, mostly because Susan is hot, and shoots arrows, and kisses Caspian at the end. I know, I gave it away!
