Movie Review: Jumper
And the point is... what?
I'm not sure what I was expecting when I went
into this film. Maybe just an afternoon of time gone. That being the case, I
guess I succeeded.
So, David can
teleport. He finds out he can do it when he gets trapped under the ice of a
frozen river. He's 15 years old, from a poor home situation, so he decides to
leave. He uses his talent to steal from banks without opening the doors. We see
that happen. Once. And we meet Roland, an agent for the NSA, no, the CIA, no,
the IRS, no, really, a paladin, but we don't find that out till
later.
Suddenly, it is 8 years later.
Roland has tracked down David and tries to kill
him.
And David teleports home to find
his childhood crush, Millie. And he takes her to Rome. By plane. Where he is
found by the paladins, and another jumper, Griffin. David is arrested. And
escapes with the help of his long-lost mother whom he has not seen since he was
five.
David convinces Griffin to become
a team, fighting the paladins. There is a one line explanation that paladins
have been killing jumpers for centuries. No reason why. No explanation for the
ability. Bleh.
Millie gets involved.
David and griffin team up, then break up, and David teleports Millie's
apartment. Several times. And there's a bomb left somewhere. At least, I don't
remember the bomb going off anywhere. I do remember a fight over the
detonator.
In the end, Roland ends up
in a hole in a canyon wall with no way out, David discovers that his mom is a
paladin who loves him so much, she is willing to give him a head start, and he
and Millie jump to somewhere warm.
The
final word? Way too many loose ends. Why are there jumpers? Who are the
paladins? Why are the paladins organized and the jumpers individuals? Why do all
jumpers always go bad? Why is David different? Is David different? I give it 3
remotes out of 10. Not good. It might be worth the dollar theatre or a shared
rental.
