Movie Review: The Bourne Ultimatum
Matt Damon, again.
Well, as the final episode in the story of Jason
Bourne, this installment does not fail to please! Lots of action, as we've come
to expect from a story about a government-trained assassin. Lots of government
double-crossing, to which the American people have become inured. Lots of
locales. Some of them seem superfluous, and, indeed, during the ending credits
(which I happened to see first since I got to the theatre so early), my friends
and I made jokes about how the producers and directors just wanted excuses to go
to these other countries. Russia is 10 minutes. France is about the same.
Production in foreign countries was... extravagant. But, it looked
good!
On the negative side, there is a
lot of close, handheld camera work that is, sometimes, disturbingly shaky. There
is less movement in Jason Bourne's super magnifying
monoscope.
That's about all the
negatives. There is some confusion due to Bourne's flashbacks, which he did not
have in the earlier movies. Granted, those flashbacks are needed in this movie
to keep the story going, but it seems that they should have been happening all
along, throughout the series.
The
bottom line? I give this movie 8mm out of 9mm. If for no other reason than to
see Bourne outthink the government by purchasing pre-pay cell
phones!
