The Spring Thing!
Songs from and Dances Inspired by "The Wiz," with
narration written and supplied by Mr. Scott's FOCUS group.
My kids were
awesome!
OK, here's the premise- Miller
is a Fine Arts Magnet School. Our chorus, dance, and drama departments
collaborated to produce a 45-minute set of songs from and dances inspired by
"The Wiz." However, something was missing. Prior to the inclusion of the Drama
department, there was no cohesion between the songs and the dances, no clues
telling who was speaking or singing, who was supposed to be on stage. So, the
Drama department was asked to fill in with some
narration.
So, we did. Ms. Bailey (our
Drama teacher) gave me a list of students who would be good for the narration,
and then I met with them every day to get the lines and blocking down. Well, we
didn't get a script, either, so I had them write their monologues. I tweaked
them and assigned parts.
And it all
worked marvelously!
And that is what
matters... that our students got to perform and do well in front of an audience
(standing room only, I might add). Was pretty good! My narrators were the best
part!
I have been known to be
biased.
