Movie Review: Sin City
Reminiscent...
Rated R for a reason. None of my students can watch
this film. Period. Until they are 18 or older.
Period.
An incredible film! And, one I
will not be able to watch again for a while. It is brilliantly violent in the
same way as A Clockwork
Orange, a movie I can stomach once a decade or
so, despite its brilliance.
Frank
Miller co-directed this, and, I am assuming, is the driving force behind its
surrealism. He also wrote the graphic novels on which it is based, and it shows.
The entire movie is a living comic book, graphic and unreal and exaggerated and
slow motion and speed.
Brilliant
post-production work makes it all black and white, with bright splashes of
color- red lips, green eyes, and lots of truly red blood. Extensive use of
computer imaging and special effects stunt work offer a fast-paced thrill ride
for the viewer with fire-tempered nerves. This mix must be seen to be
believed!
I am glad, however, that I
did not see this in a theatre. The soundtrack would have been too loud, the
violence too large, and, like my initial reaction to
A Clockwork
Orange 20 years ago, I would have stopped
watching. I feel the need to cry and laugh. It may sound weird, because of how
most people view laughter, but it is my firm opinion, originally offered by
Robert A. Heinlein, that we laugh because someone got hurt. And, in this film,
the characters get hurt. A lot.
Rent
this. Watch it. Be sure to have a blanket to cover yourself- you don't want to
get any of the blood on you. But watch it.
