Movie Review: War of the Worlds (2005)
Special Effects and Tom Cruise
I will say immediately that it is definitely worth
seeing.
That being said, it is sad that
it takes an invasion from Mars imperiling all of the planet to bring a divorced
father back in touch with his
children.
The special effects are
amazing! The tripods, the aliens, all very well
done.
The story feels like that of the
book, though it is different. This is not a third person tale. Like the book,
this is the story of one man's attempt to survive, pulled from time to time to
another character within his realm of influence, in this case, his son and
daughter. The writers did a marvelous job of waging a demoralizing war on the
humans. I won't go into details because, quite frankly, they are pretty gross,
but an assault of this nature on modern society would indeed kill the
planet.
I have only one negative
question: If the Martians planted their tripods millions of years ago, why
didn't they just come on down millions of years ago and direct evolution on this
planet? Dinosaurs and primates would certainly have put up far less resistance
than the evolved humans. So, besides the whole ignoring of microscopic agents
issue, minus a million points for Martian
strategy.
Tom Cruise is not as good as
his leading female, Dakota Fanning, playing his 11 year old daughter. She does
an amazing job of reacting to these horrible scenes of warfare that, I'm hoping,
weren't actually needing to be acted out for her. She is fabulous! I would love
to see her as Valentine Wiggin (Note to Mr. Speilberg-
Ender's
Game,
baby!)
The final word? For what this
film is, I give it a perfect score, five out of five, but see this film in the
theatre. It is going to fail miserably on DVD, not because it's not good, but
quite the opposite- it is a
huge
film! I can't imagine trying to see the long shots of the tripods on a
television, even a 50" plasma.
