How to Get into a Magnet School
Like all Magnet schools in Los Angeles, admission to The Open Magnet Charter school is done through a lottery system because there are many more applicants than available spots. The lottery is conducted at the LAUSD main offices and The Open School has no input into which students are accepted.
The process begins in mid-December with the publication of Choices magazine. Available at any LAUSD school, Choices describes all of the Magnet and Charter schools in LAUSD and allows students to apply to a single school. The Choices Application to apply for Open School must be postmarked by December 18, 2009. Applications should be picked up at a child’s home school or the public library as Open School gets a very limited supply.
LAUSD assigns students lottery points for various factors such as whether their local school is over-crowded, if they applied but were not accepted the previous year and if they have a sibling at the school. Applicants receive a letter in early March informing them how many points they have received. The lottery itself is held several weeks later.
Students receive a second letter informing them if they have been accepted into the school or have been placed on its waiting list. Over the next few months, depending on the rate of acceptance, students on the waiting list will be accepted as students decline enrollment.
