Two blogs is better than one?

After over 3 years of blogging, I am over iBlog, mainly because of the design templates, but for other reasons as well (publish time, publishing irregularities, small community support etc). Unfortunately, I have also discovered the limitations of exporting my 3+ years of content from iBlog and into something else (wordpress, moveable type, blogger etc) and appear to be up the proverbial without a paddle.

Another reason for the change is that I really should have a work blog and a personal blog. Mainly because I want to publicise the work one a bit more and I don't want to include alot of the minor details of my life that would bore most people (the question should I be ranting about these things anyway is a whole other issue). Also the .mac homepage URL seems unprofessional and makes all my .mac stuff much more visible (not that I have anything to hide...).

So, I've gone all Wordpress with the support of the ecto blogging client app, and you'll find the new blogs here with a couple of starter entries:
Work
http://idealinterfaces.wordpress.com/
Personal
http://oliverw.wordpress.com/

Apparently, you use the same URL in your RSS feed reader with the addition of 'feed' after the url.

Bear with me, while I refine the blogs (calendar navigation, comments, no XML/RSS feed button, categories, tags etc) and expect the work blog to be more complete to start with.

Here goes...

...and Skype follows YIM by uping the ante (but not releasing yet)

After the release of the update to Yahoo! Messenger, Skype today blogged that they have a new Skype client for Mac in the works with video. Apart from the addition of video, it looks like the contact list is significantly more minimalist. The current Skype client on Mac has a lot of wasted space and is cluttered with things that I don't use, so the refined approach is appealing. When you are trying to manage four different IM contact lists, all screen real estate counts...

oooo... Google Checkout

So Google has announced Google Checkout and Om Malik says:
"Read between the lines - this is a dangerous and most brilliant assault on the “cost per click” (CPC) plans of Microsoft, Yahoo and everyone else who is coming to the party … late. This move is about cost-per-action advertising. It is about kicking up the online advertising business … another notch!
Lets compare the two - CPC and CPA based ads. In case of CPA, there are no wasted dollars, no click fraud, and all the revenues are coming from sales. As an advertiser, you have no risk. You sell, you make money, Google gets a piece of the action. Why would you bother with other options?"

Consumer 2.0 Breakfast

The marvellous Rach ran a Consumer 2.0 breakfast yesterday in the Sydney CBD that had a great turn out of interesting people (both new to me and old friends). The format was three pitches of three minutes each with three questions. It worked really well.

Go read Mick and Alan's posts for further info on the presenters and their talks (and some photos on Alan's).

Over a month later...

Well that's probably the longest break in blogging for a while...
Obviously, lots has been going on:
- Launched the Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index
- Spoke at three sessions at Mobile Content World
- Went to the Future of TV conference for fun
- Saw Nick Everitt play last night
- indoor rock climbing
- catching up with people, birthdays, Sunday beers etc.
- finishing off some projects and lots of exciting meetings to plan out the next 6 months of work with various clients...

All good stuff.
One of the reasons I haven't been blogging is I want to transfer all my old posts over to a Wordpress blog and it's not as easy as I hoped :-(

I'm launching the AIMIA MCIDG AMPLI on the 1st of June (Sydney)

"The AIMIA Mobile Content Industry Development Group (MCIDG) is delighted to results of their Mobile Content Consumer Web Survey at a special breakfast briefing.

The Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index tracks the behaviour and interests of Australian mobile phone users including details on demographics, consumption of types of mobile content, handset penetration, attitudes to migrating to 3G, future mobile content preferences and much more.

This is the only independent and open study of consumer consumption of mobile content in Australia and was conducted by Oliver Weidlich of Ideal Interfaces and m.Net Corporation, with the involvement of a large number of AIMIA MCIDG members.

The first report in August 2005 elicited lots of interest from all over Australia and internationally, so be amongst the first to get the results."

It sold out last year, so get in quick!

mmmmmm... smoooth

This LG KV6000 is a damn nice looking phone, I had a quick play with one on Friday. Ugly UI, but the touch interface and the hardware design is sexy.

Sunday Night

The sky is black, the lights are low, Mazzy Star is on the stereo, the city skyline glows through the window and I have left-over home-made tomato soup :-)

Superfuture? Not quite yet

Was looking around today for a book store and a Google search popped up a listing on 'superfuture' which labels itself as:'urban cartography for global shopping experts', but it also has bars hotels etc. It has some nice maps and I love the tone of voice for some of the reviews, but it doesn't seem quite full enough to make it a great reference. maybe a starting point...

The hotel site associated with it, Tablet Hotels, is great again, not much in Australia, but there seem to be some good ones internationally.

Beauties and the beast

Went out to catch up with the gorgeous L & A last night. I wasn't planning on staying out long, so I just wore sneakers, jeans and a tee shirt, but they wanted to go to an establishment with a stricter dress code. After being initially being turned away at the front door I was allowed in the side door because of the company I was keeping :-)

Sydney at it's worst...
Fun night though!

Sydney's best resturant with a view?

We had another supper club dinner last night at Aqua Dining, to celebrate both the arrival of D's friend Jeff and the imminent arrival of S&Z's bub. I have been to Aqua Dining twice before, but always had a table inside. Last night we were lucky enough to get a table outside on the balcony overlooking Nth Sydney pool and then Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. It was J's first time to Australia so we thought we should go for something that covers the main Sydney/Australian icons. With the heaters on the verandah it was quite warm, and a beautiful night to watch Sydney.

The dinner itself was great. I had the Carpaccio of Yellow Fin Tuna for entree, followed by one of the best mains I've ever had;the Veal wrapped in prosciutto on spatzle and mushroom. After a Moscow Mule to start, we had a bottle of Punter's Corner 2002 Cab Sav and I had a Tempus Two Botrytis Semillon dessert wine with my chocolate pudding and licorice ice cream.

Highly Recommended!

"Optus' is the most non-nonsense"

In the latest (May) edition of the Australian Personal Computer (APC) magazine Dan Warne lab tests 3G services from the major mobile players here in Australia. The article (for those with access to a paper copy) is titled 'Put the Net in your pocket'.

And while I don't agree with all points of his review, as someone who has spent a while working on the Optus Mobile portal and app, it's nice to hear "Out of all the services, Optus' was the most no-nonsense". Here's to making it even better still!
