Can you say "Game Changer"?Apple is providing a public beta
of their new software which will let you install Windows XP on your Intel-based
Mac, called Boot Camp. The software will be officially included in
the next Mac OS X release 'Leopard'
(10.5).
Although virtualisation (being able to run both OSs at the same time) is probably the ultimate goal for most people who are interested in this sort of thing, this is an interesting step. Customers can now use OS X at home for their easy to use apps and with an OS that is safer and more secure and if they unfortunately have to run Windows at work they can boot into their work environment. The fact that Apple have not only sanctioned it, but are now assisting with this beta (which includes drivers specific for running Windows on the Intel Macs) is very interesting. Of course with dual-boot you have to shut down and reboot into the other partition will make the process more cumbersome that most, but for a lot of people this will be a great solution. Personally I'll get an Intel Mac so that I don't have to have a stupid PC taking up so much space in my office for the few times when I need one for testing an app or website on Windows. Oh and look at that... My stock in Apple just jumped nearly 10% :-) Posted: Thu - April 6, 2006 at 08:02 AM |
