Superfuture? Not quite yet

Was looking around today for a book store and a Google search popped up a listing on 'superfuture' which labels itself as:'urban cartography for global shopping experts', but it also has bars hotels etc. It has some nice maps and I love the tone of voice for some of the reviews, but it doesn't seem quite full enough to make it a great reference. maybe a starting point...

The hotel site associated with it, Tablet Hotels, is great again, not much in Australia, but there seem to be some good ones internationally.

Beauties and the beast

Went out to catch up with the gorgeous L & A last night. I wasn't planning on staying out long, so I just wore sneakers, jeans and a tee shirt, but they wanted to go to an establishment with a stricter dress code. After being initially being turned away at the front door I was allowed in the side door because of the company I was keeping :-)

Sydney at it's worst...
Fun night though!

Domino - The Movie

Watched 'Domino' the other night with Al & Leighann. I wasn't interested in it at first as I thought it was all going to be action. But the combination of Kiera Knightly, humour, action, and an interesting plot made it better than I expected.

The Great Escape

Went out to The Great Escape on Sunday. It was the perfect day for it, sunshine, clear blue skies and a bit of a breeze to take the edge off the heat.

The highlights were:
- Bernard Fanning
- Josh Pike
- The Mountain Goats
- Xavier Rudd (below)

But really it was just one of those lazy days of relaxing with friends and listening to whatever's on.
The festival actually went over three days. It was one of the best festival layouts I've seen, with plenty of space for everyone and a very relaxed vibe (or maybe because it was the last day it was simply exhaustion). There was a huge range of stuff including performance art, a yoga lawn, exhibitions, markets and a huge variety of wonderful food. There were four main stages and a broad range of musical styles. More photos over at Flickr.

Nick has a website

A friend of mine, Nick Everitt, is a muso.
I highly recommend you go and check out his website and sample Silent Ships and then go see him, and his partner Liesl, play live.

An interesting bit of info:
The cover photo of his CD is on a river, and in the background is where I grew up. Sunny South Tacoma on the Central Coast.

The *New* Pink Panther

Look, I like Steve Martin as an actor (when he's good, he's good, when he's not, he's not good etc)
I love the old Pink Panther movies
Nobody can ever replace Peter Sellers as Jacques Clouseau
I didn't want to laugh when I watched the new Pink Panther movie
But despite having two American actors in lead roles (Martin & Kline) and even a trip to America in the movie (how 'Hollywood'), I did actually enjoy it as a light-hearted movie. There was respect paid to the old movies era and style, new variations on Sellers' previous jokes (spinning the globe) and some nice inclusions of current technology (Smart car, internet and even downloading a ringtones).

It can never replace the original movies, especially because of Sellers, but get it on DVD for a bit of a laugh.

Snow Patrol

Snow Patrol's Final Straw is one of those albums that you can't stop playing, even though you know you'll eventually play it to death.

Wolfmother (again)

Wolfmother rocked the Metro last night.

I've seen them before and they played even better this time. Not the kind of CD I would buy, but certainly an entertaining evening. I went for a crowd surf for the last song, it's been a while, but I can still get away with it.

Although I don't know him, Blogging Rock Photographer Daniel Boud went too and has Photos

Derby Day & Acqua Vino

Flew down to Melbourne on Saturday to hang out with friends and go to Derby Day. I rarely go to the races and have never been to any of the Spring Carnival. Of course, I will have to go to a Melbourne Cup one day, but a big project meant that I was lucky to get the weekend off let alone trying to get a couple of weekdays off (my boss can be harsh ;-)

Anyway, we got out to the races at about 1:30 and had a great afternoon just wandering around. Gorgeous women everywhere, but way too much fake tan for my liking. We fought our way through the crowds in front of the grandstands and found ourselves hanging out near the horses stables in a large grassy area, close to the bar and the bookies. Threw $20 on a couple of horses in race 8 but they didn't get up.

Later that afternoon we jumped on the train and headed into Yarraville. We went to one of the nicest bars I've ever been to, Acqua Vino (18a Anderson Street, Yarraville). It's a 1920's/30's lounge that has a brilliant style. The kind of place I would go to too often if it was in Sydney. From the numerous, large comfortable lounges, great Tapas and pizza, brilliant drinks menu to the brilliant music it is a great experience. It was a great afternoon/evening of good food, great drinks, and funny conversation to end a fun day.

Nice Bar

Went to The White Horse tonight for a beer with Jackie & friends. It reminded me of what a nice place it is and all the places along Crown Street.

The Girl in the Cafe

I recorded 'The Girl in the Cafe' the other night and watched it last night. I think it will go down as one of my favourite movies. Funny, awkward to the point of cringing and very different plot. The acting by both Bill Nighy & Kelly Macdonald is great. There's also a great soundscape/soundtrack and cinematography, reminiscent of Lost in Translation
