Sunday Night

The sky is black, the lights are low, Mazzy Star is on the stereo, the city skyline glows through the window and I have left-over home-made tomato soup :-)

Sydney's best resturant with a view?

We had another supper club dinner last night at Aqua Dining, to celebrate both the arrival of D's friend Jeff and the imminent arrival of S&Z's bub. I have been to Aqua Dining twice before, but always had a table inside. Last night we were lucky enough to get a table outside on the balcony overlooking Nth Sydney pool and then Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. It was J's first time to Australia so we thought we should go for something that covers the main Sydney/Australian icons. With the heaters on the verandah it was quite warm, and a beautiful night to watch Sydney.

The dinner itself was great. I had the Carpaccio of Yellow Fin Tuna for entree, followed by one of the best mains I've ever had;the Veal wrapped in prosciutto on spatzle and mushroom. After a Moscow Mule to start, we had a bottle of Punter's Corner 2002 Cab Sav and I had a Tempus Two Botrytis Semillon dessert wine with my chocolate pudding and licorice ice cream.

Highly Recommended!

Drinks

Last year the Psych Boys (and associated wives and girlfriends) bought me a wine decanter and a couple of bottles of wine for my birthday. I opened one of the wines a couple of weeks ago and it was one of the nicest wines I've ever had. I don't generally like Shiraz, I prefer Cab Sav, but this was great. Check it out: 2003 BlackJack Block 6 Shiraz. Looks like I drank it a little early, but now I know how much I like it, I'll have to go get another one to keep for longer :-)

The other thing I am drinking more of is Dr Stuart's Fruit Teas. The Apple & Ginger and Cranberry & Raspberry ones are my favourite. I get them at my local health food store.

Cooking Again

Saturday night I cooked for the first time in 4 years.
I made a Lamb and Red Pepper sauce on spaghetti. Al and Leighann were my Guinea Pigs and as of time of writing, both were still alive.

I really enjoyed it, in fact the morning after I cooked my breakfast as well
- Rosemary and lamb sausages
- Eggs
- Bacon
- Turkish bread
- Cooked tomato

Onde in Darlo

Went to Onde last night with Toovey and Bec.
We got there around 8:30 and the restaurant and bar were full, so they took our phone number and we went up for a drink at the Green Park Hotel. Wandered back at about 9pm and waited at the bar for a while longer. The staff were very apologetic about the wait, but basically all the diners were having a great night and didn't want to move.
The service was wonderful and probably the highlight of the restaurant. i only remembered later in the evening that one of my main reasons for going was I heard the service was brilliant. The were only two people on front of house and they managed extremely well with very warm and friendly, but efficient service. The wine recommendation was also discussed and appropriate.
I had crab cakes for entree, the Duck confit for main and the nectarine tart for desert. The food was OK, not exceptional, but nice and the prices reasonable. Given the small size of the dining room it was also quite noisey.
All in all the service really stood out and I'd go back there again to try some different dishes on a mid-week night (no bookings taken).

Lunch on Friday

Had lunch on Friday with JW, whom I have an awful amount of respect for. We caught up at Forbes & Burton in Darlo, and had a lovely meal. I was craving something substantial and the bangers and mash hit the spot. Also had a bottle of a Sav Blanc from Orange which was quite different, forget the name. The conversation was very varied from property to mobile services to good books and was a lot of fun for a Friday afternoon.

Sugar tastes good

I went with some clients to Sugaroom today for lunch in Pyrmont to celebrate the launch of something we've been working on for two years. It's a great little restaurant, the decor inside is nice and there are water views, but they look out toward the car loading docks. Might be nicer at night. The service was very good too.

I had the pork belly& scallop entree and the chicken for main. Both perfectly cooked, nicely presented and very tasty.
The highlight of the meal was the caramelised apple tarte tatin w vanilla bean ice cream. Very good!

No Essence, No!

Forgot to mention I went to Essence at King Street Wharf on Tuesday night with JD.
Probably the worst restaurant experience I've had in ages:
- Slow and uninterested service
- Slow, badly timed food
- Ordinary dishes
- Mixed up bill

We were just catching up, so we had plenty to laugh about. I would have hated to have been there on a date.
Don't go to Essence!

Lovely Libertine

Went out for dinner with a great group of people last night to Libertine in Kellet St.
Great food and the Manuka Mules kicks Ass (get it!) with honey vodka, chilli vodka, Vietnamese mint, lime, and ginger beer.

BBQs all 'round

Well! With the fine weather on the weekend, it was perfect for a BBQ at home on the Central Coast on Saturday night with a coupe of friends coming over, and then up to Tomato Hill on Sunday for more BBQ action in the sun.

Australia. Winter. Sun. Friends. BBQ. Beer - great stuff.

Dessert Pizza

Went down to Blue's Point Cafe tonight for dinner, while EC is still hanging out with me in sunny Blues Pt Rd. We had a nice pasta each and I decided to go for dessert (not that EC complained). The dessert pizza sounded interesting, so I ordered up and got nothing like what I was expecting. It came out as a stack of profiterole-like bits of pizza dough coated in warm chocolate hazelnut (i.e. Nuttella) whipped cream and strawberries. Gooooood...

Doyle's on a lovely Winters Day in Sydney

Did a breakfast presentation this morning, was a bit of fun. I was invited to talk about the Online Customer Experience; how customer's online behaviour is changing, what makes a successful website and what the future holds. It was a bit of fun. Me and the other speaker were then taken for lunch at Doyle's (for a nice restaurant it sure is a crappy website... so here's a review of Doyle's). This was the first time I had eaten at the Circular Quay Doyle's. It was a beautiful Sydney day with clear blue skies and no wind. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather, the view and the fish. I had the Brill, kind of like a Flounder, quite nice! And a bottle of white topped off the experience:-)

Off to an old favourite, Malaya, with EC tonight. A great day of eating.

mmmm

Forgot to say, I have been working pretty hard lately and my rewards have been a supplement to my usual afternoon tea from St Honore Bakery in Miller Street, North Sydney.

Here is the evidence (though it no longer exists):
Espresso (coffee mousse)

Opera (hazelnut and chocolate layered cake)

WMA and Video in iPods future?

Cringely has some tidbits of evidence that suggest that iTunes will be moving to support other music formats and video:
"Looking at the unused iTunes icons that shipped with your new version of 10.4, you'll notice icons for currently-not-supported ogg vorbis and Windows Media Audio (wma), as well as several others including a variety of video formats, too."
Read the rest of his comments at the bottom of the page and his great comment about MS 'me too'-ing the 'Year of HD'.
