“Sunken Heights,” 1945-6

Back in those days, the neighborhood was known as “Sunset Heights,” although only the Oldest Inhabitants now admit to any recollection of that name. I visited with John and Nada Nicholas (he’s a former mayor of Sunset) who arrived in town in the late 1940s, shortly after our departure. Their kindness has provided many of the details in this little photo-memoir.

In keeping with his office as CFP (Chief Family Punster), Pappy called our little tenancy “Sunken Heights,” in honor of the configuration of the front yard. I have no memory of the terrace arrangement along the front walk; it’s probably been added since our time there.
The decorative concrete wall of this side yard, on the other hand, looks familiar; it may well date to our time. I was playing out there one day, wrapped in some unfathomable 4-year-old fantasy, and found some reason to toss leaves over the wall into the neighbor’s back yard. The neighbor (Morris? McKenzie?) got mad and threatened to call the police. Scared me, of course, and I ran to my parents, who instructed me to apologize. I did, and the episode blew over, leaving me relieved but still puzzled as to what all the fuss was about.

Used to play with the neighbor’s daughter of my age; her name may have been Janet. Or maybe not. She always wanted to play house. When we did, she insisted on being “Mid.” I was adamant that there was no such name. She said she’d be “Mid” if she wanted to be “Mid.” So there.
