Bequia
Bequia is one
of the most attractive islands available in the region if you are looking
for a "real" Caribbean experience and not for tourist traps, overcrowded
beaches, poverty and crime ridden locations, condominia and fast food.
Bequia has been inhabited by European settlers, mostly of British, French
and Portuguese descent, as well as by people of Carib and African origin for
over four hundred years.
It is frequently visited by yacht owners and cruise ships, as Admiralty bay,
once base of Lord Nelsons Caribbean fleet, is one of the safest anchorages
in the region, and the waters of the Grenadines are known as "world class
" for sailing.
Bequia is outside of the "hurricane belt" and enjoys excellent weather
year round.
Bequia has a number of small hotels and rental villas, but is still (fortunately)
undiscovered by mass tourism. Lower Bay and Princess Margaret beaches, the
nicest in the island, feel "crowded" when you can spot more than
20 people along their 2000 feet stretch.
Nowadays Bequia has about 6500 residents, including expatriates of over twenty
different nationalities
Bequia has a small international airport with daily flights to Barbados (
a 35 minutes trip) and charter flight to most other Caribbean islands.
Bequia is part of St.Vincent and the Grenadines, a parliamentary democracy
that has been an independent member of the British commonwealth for over 30
years.
