Low-cost Apple iPod rumors firming up
"What seemed unbelievable a week ago is
now entirely likely: Apple can, and probably will, produce mini-iPods and sell
them for around $100. The 2 GB version will probably be based on the "Cornice
Storage Element." This mini-hard disk, previously only offered in a 1.5 GB
version was introduced earlier today in a 2 GB version. According to Cornice
press release ('embargoed until Jan. 5, 2004'...hmmm..interesting....), the new
drive will be 'a key component in some of the most innovative MP3 players,'"
iPod-Zone.com is reporting. "It also states that 'Leading consumer electronics
infrastructure providers like PortalPlayer announced their continued intent to
optimize their offerings for use with Cornice’s Storage Element, providing
consumer electronics manufacturers an easy way to incorporate the Cornice
Storage Element within future products.' PortalPlayer makes the software and
part of the hardware for the Apple iPods... Interesting!"
MacDailyNews Take:
US$100 is probably too low for a 2GB iPod.
US$199 is probably more likely in our opinion. A 1.5GB iPod, too, for US$149?
Anything can happen, of course.
